I first learned of Zelda, Star Fox and all that because of the first Smash Bros N64.
Then sometime around 2001-2003 or so, when I started playing Melee. As soon as Marth was unlocked as a Newcomer in Melee. I fell in love. [No homo.] I just loved Swordsman, and Japanese type things. Capes too. So I instantly stuck to the character since then and on.So many years later. I was confused of his gender at first because of the tiara. But after I got used to it. I saw him more as a handsome, elegant sword master.
I never knew of Wave-dashing and advanced techs back in those days because I didn't use the internet like that. We didn't know about Tournaments and stuff.
So if we[Me and two members of The Blades] learned of wave dashing, moon walking, shuffle, etc and got into the whole competitive scene back then. I doubt we would have left Melee around 2008 and went to Brawl. But we didn't and we got used to Brawl's slower movement, and floaty engine.
Marth was still kinda amazing in Brawl and had combos, and chain grabs though.

We[My group] dropped Brawl in late 2014 and got into Super Smash Bros. U [SSB4]
I for sure could not use Marth the way I wanted to in this game. How I'm used playing with him due to his shorter range, lags, no chain grabs, short grab range, and no double Fairs. Weaker air game. It does feel like a big nerf in many aspects. And the way you have to use Marth now is completely different, but I still kept playing SSB4 and have fun. Even if it is not my best style, or form of using Marth. I'll try to do what I can and bring this Marth up the best of my ability whenever I play.
