Why are well spaced nairs a better zoning tool than fairs in the Fox matchup?

I just played in a local tournament yesterday, and the biggest thing I took away from it is that shield felt like a terrible option. I got a lot more out of trying to use evasive movement instead of eating attacks with shield. Probably not an insightful observation by any means but whatever.
