Yeah, I'd be fine with Dante, but if you're going to get a couple more third party "icon" characters, there are definitely a few I'd go with before him. Crash, Lara, Doomguy, Hayabusa... Dante isn't even the next choice I'd made for a third Capcom series. I would absolutely pick a Resident Evil...

Eh, given how confused I was by the Persona reveal, I think it's fair for an entire country to not know what's going on for the sake of me remembering a Pizza Hut commercial from 20 years ago.

If it's Crash (and I hope it is), we're going to see the guy in the costume with the megaphone. They brought him out of retirement for Crash 4 hype, they'll use him here too.

Bonk got a lot of love on these boards way back in the Brawl speculation days. You don't hear too much about him these days, which is too bad. I have an old EGM from 1991 that had him on the cover right there with Mario and Sonic.

Shooters in general have never made many waves in Japan. Also, Doom was also specifically a cornerstone of PC gaming first and foremost, and I could be way off base but I don't think PC gaming ever held a candle to arcades and consoles in Japan.

True. But if Smash speculation had existed back then the way it does now, I don't think Ness (or possibly Jigglypuff) would have been on too many roster predictions.

Dixie and Toad are the last two Nintendo characters I genuinely feel are "missing" from Smash. It doesn't seem like the Fighters' Pass will be kind to either of them, but maybe if there is a Season 2 we will get more specifically Nintendo characters. Like, that's where I imagine a new FE or...

Also, Ness in the original. No one saw that coming.

I'd say Crash and Lara. They were bona fide pop culture icons in their PS1 heyday, on the level of a Mario, Pac-Man or Sonic. Based on that merit, Scorpion and maybe Master Chief as well.

Kazooie don't put up with anyone's guff, and she ain't got time to sugarcoat anything. She's a bird on a mission and she's the best.

Nuts & Bolts isn't a terrible game. It's fine. It's just not really a Banjo-Kazooie game.

It just occured to me that it would more sense, in a way, for all these wonderful fan artists to draw Banjo and Kazooie reuniting with Sonic that it does with Mario. Those three were actually in a game together.

Kind of relevant, I remember reading that a lot Japanese fans were confused by the inclusion of Little Mac and the general Western enthusiasm for him. Punch-Out just isn't a big deal over there. I was reminded of that reading a lot of Hero reactions.
