    Whenever I'm uncertain of the amount of lag in FG and have distance from my opponent, I tap the R button to see how much it delays. Over multiple matches with opponents from various regions, I've found the lag to be (usually) somewhere from 15-35 frames. Anything more than 20 feels noticeable...

    Side Smash or Down Smash?

    The side smash can do more if it hits where the sourspot (4% uncharged) and the sweetspot (15% uncharged, same as down smash) overlap. My bad, no part of it does 4%. The sourspot does 15% and the sweetspot does 19%.

    Since you're transitioning from melee and mained marth, I'd recommand giving lucina a try. Her sword's power is consistent throughout rather than concentrated at the tip, yielding a less distance-oriented and more aggressive play style than marth.
