how to gentleman
Make sure you're practicing it on an opponent and not just throwing them out. I didn't know there was a difference when I first started, but I think at least one(?) of the hits needs to hit your opponent. I usually tap A as fast as I can 3 times and hold it on the last press. Actually, you can be viable at locals and smaller-scale tournaments without wavedashing, at least. Look up the player Borp.- SLOTR

L-canceling and wavedashing are pivotal parts of high level melee. Without them, you will not be viable, regardless of character. Work on getting your SHFFL's down. If you are trying to SHFFL a knee, the hitbox for the knee probably just isn't coming out. Don't FF the SH knee. Practicing...- SLOTR
