They aren't really after "One Piece" anyways, they are trying to achieve their dreams, have a good time, and kick some A**! The storyline would be of much lower quality if it was always just centered around getting the treasure. Not to mention you were probably watching 4Kids' horrible dub.

Man, keeping up with One Piece releases can be hard when you have to work all the time.

lol, I tried getting my cousin to start trying out One Piece. He watches only dubbed episodes and doesn't read the manga because he hates reading -.-. Oh well whatever his loss.
