As far as I'm concerned, this is definitely a great step in the right direction; being in a game that hasn't anything to do with sports and parties. Even this single step goes a long way.

Doesn't Daisy have more years over Rosalina, though? I mean, surely a casual fan base had picked up a spin-off Mario title at some point, and to me, some people would recognize Daisy a little more than Rosalina due to being a Nintendo Character longer. And as to 'hated' Mario characters, yes...
