That doesn't work, but just make sure that when you rest you actually hit. Three seconds is a very large chunk of time and a mistake as big as hitting a rest will, if you're playing a half-decent player, easily cost you a stock

In general, what does the skill curve for the game look like, and how does it differ from character to character? I'm curious because ever since I learned how to L-Cancel I haven't really been improving.

I use X for all my jumping (I find it much, much more efficient to SH and WD with X) and I use L for shielding and wavedashing while I use R for L-Cancelling.
