TL;DR: In Melee, I'm a Fox techskill idiot who believes in 20XX. In PM, I'm a Lucas techskill idiot who also plays Fox, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard, Pikachu, and, to a lesser extent, a bunch of other characters. I've never entered a tournament or even played against a competent player.

I've been a fan of Smash Bros for about half my life. My first Smash Bros game was Brawl, in which my brother and I were the definition of stereotypical Kirby mains (i.e. little kids with sideways Wiimotes who exclusively use Kirby's down-b) with Pikachu secondaries, using the same down-b strategy with Pikachu. Or maybe I mained Pikachu and had a Kirby secondary. I don't remember. We were like this for the first several years of my Smash career, and, aside from our eventual discovery of rolling, we had no idea how much deeper Smash was, since we only ever played against each other and low-level CPUs. So I guess this doesn't really count as "experience."
After Sm4sh was released, we picked it up, but I only actually started playing constantly about a year and a half ago. Give or take. I don't remember too well. At first, I mained Charizard, but after I played through MOTHER 3, I picked up Ness. I wanted to play Lucas, but I didn't want to buy DLC, since I could just go play Brawl. Sure, Sm4sh is way better, but I didn't like the idea of buying a character I already owned in a previous game. And yes, I was also a stereotypical Sm4sh Ness main (PK Fire>PK Fire>PK Fire>Down Throw>Forward Air>Forward Air>Forward Air).
Eventually, I decided to just go ahead and buy Lucas. I think it was at this point that I really started taking the game seriously, and, of course, I totally dropped Brawl. Last summer, I finally decided to replace my Wii U Pro controller with the GameCube controller, and from there it seemed only natural to try out Project M, since PM Lucas is way better than Sm4sh Lucas. At first, I didn't really like PM, since I would always go offstage to edgeguard and end up SDing. I was also frustrated by how the airdodge put you in special fall. Eventually, I learned why the mechanics were like this, and I started learning to play Fox in August, as I was planning to get Melee as soon as I could. At this point, I also dropped Sm4sh, as once I adjusted to Melee/PM's speed and combos, I found Sm4sh's slower pace and near-total lack of hitstun boring.
Around this time, I also learned of the concept of 20XX, and I got really interested in Fox techskill, which I've been practicing for the past several months. I also learned that PM Lucas has some pretty neat techskill, so I've started playing him again, too. However, I've still never entered a tournament, or even played on Netplay, so I still totally suck at the actual game.
In Melee, not much has changed since I picked up the game. I've obviously gotten better at techskill, but I'm still basically a Fox techskill idiot with no actual skill in the neutral game. However, I don't really play Melee too much anymore, since I prefer Project M's more diverse and at least somewhat balanced cast. I still main Lucas, but I've also picked up Pikachu, Ivysaur, Charizard, and Squirtle. I've also tried out a bunch of other characters, but I don't play them nearly as much. Oh, and of course I also play Fox, since PM Fox is about the same as Melee Fox. In fact, I actually prefer PM Fox because you don't need to fire stall before a ledgedash in PM and it's way easier to pivot up tilt. Not that I've actually found much of a use for the latter, since I still can't quite do it consistently.
