After the SDCC tournament yesterday... I'm having doubts Smash 4 will be a good competitive game.

I've actually had an opposite experience myself. Before I was too familiar with the competitive scene, I started watching matches. The commentary definitely helped me understand why players did certain things or just what was going on in general. Admittedly, there were times when I had to go...

Does Sakurai know what he's doing with character balance?

To be honest, if you add something in a game that obviously improves a player's chances of winning, it'd be silly to think people wouldn't take advantage of that. I just don't really believe this would be something Sakurai didn't grasp.

    Competitive community have commitment issues?

If you want a better balance between grounded and aerial approach, you can accomplish it by buffing the grounded side and not touching the aerial side at all. Personally I don't think aerials really needed nerfing to begin with. More importantly than approaching, they are used to control space...

    Game Slowdown

I know that 4 player matches on Fountain of Dreams will lag, which is why it's banned in doubles. But that's caused by the reflection off the water. I guess try to play with less clutter.

Is across-the-board low landing lag on aerials really necessary?

Moves with horizontal knockback could either be DI'd up so that the player gets popped up anyway, or DI'd down so that any potential combo would just turn into a tech chase scenario. For ground combos to work the move would need to have almost no knockback so the opponent doesn't really move...

    Thread for Combos

We also don't know if he could have had better combo DI. It's just very difficult at this time to discern whether the combos in each video could have been escaped or not. We'll just have to wait for the game to be released. Although I do hope for the best.

Is across-the-board low landing lag on aerials really necessary?

Your statement about jabs reminded me of this that happened in the tournament. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eDtY_Ev7G4 I mean, jabs may not be as common as other moves but I don't think they're neglected all that much. Captain falcon's gentleman is pretty common. Marth uses it to edgeguard...

Is across-the-board low landing lag on aerials really necessary?

If you're only restricted to one or two aerials close to the ground, it really limits the opportunity to set up DI traps and whatever. And you might end up seeing some combos boil down to just repeating the same aerial over and over and that's not as interesting. Anyway, just because a move has...

Which Version Do You Think Will Be More Exciting To Watch?

I actually hated this most about watching the 3DS version. Not being able to see what the player sees means it's harder to notice all the little decisions they might make. Understanding the human element is the most important part of spectating. Otherwise you might as well just watch combo...

    21 Questions For Competetives

    1. There's something I think is very important that people aren't really talking about. Options. That is, to have a good variety of ways of dealing with different situations. Every character has flaws. The more a player has to work against those flaws, the easier it is to figure out what they...

    21 Questions For Competetives

Oh man, what a mountain to climb here. Even a single question here could warrant paragraphs of response. For now I'll try to answer some of the smaller questions. I'll probably come back and discuss the other ones later. 4.1: Imagine chain grabbing your opponent right off the stage, and other...

How will the competitive scene for SSB4 be?

It's not like the presence of advanced techniques has removed the need for fundamentals and mind games, which I assume are things you are referring to in "the manner fighting games are SUPPOSED to be competitive". And anyway, isn't the essence of competition to use what you have been given to...
