The Music Approach

Music is everywhere. We listen to it everyday. Some of us even know how to play an instrument or two. But...have you ever wondered how music can be applied to Smash bros? In this guide, you'll learn how to divide certain moves, actions, DIs and other combos into beats.

So, everyone knows that a beat is a count. We count beats commonly in pairs of 4.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4

This is known as a quarter beat.

The rate of these beats is known as "beats per minute (abbreviated to bpm)". Because there are 60 seconds in a minute, a clock ticks at 60bpm.

Here's a simple example. Because Mario has a break in between throwing fireballs, you can easily calculate the bpm of how many fireballs are thrown in a minute. Get a stopwatch and time how many fireballs Mario can throw in a minute.

If you clocked in around 70bpm, then you've got it. Mario can throw fireballs at a steady 70bpm.

Now, with this in mind, you can time your dodges right. But it all depends on how far you are away from him. With this key, let's add a factor.

As you know, the fireball can only go a certain distance when it is unleashed. After three bounces, it disappears. But that begs the question: What is the bpm of the fireball as it is bouncing? Well, here's your answer: 131bpm.

This calculation is a little tricky to figure out, because you have what is known as a "pickup beat". A pickup beat is a special kind of beat that comes right before the initial count of 1.

Here's an example

- - - -& 1 2 3 4

The "&" represents a pick up at the "and" of the 4th beat. Now, Mario's fireball is a little different, because there is what is known as a "triplet".

In music, a triplet is a group of three notes that are put together as one beat. It is counted like this

1 and a

So, back to Mario's fireball...

As soon as Mario fires it, this starts the pick up beat "a". When the fireball makes it's first bounce, this is the first beat. What we have now is this

a1

Notice that the is closed. This signifies the pick up. Now, let's add the two remaining bounces.

a1 2 3 -

The "-" means a rest on the beat. This beat is when the fireball disappears. The same thing apples to Luigi as well. But what about Dr. Mario?

Dr. Mario is more powerful but slower then regular Mario (according to Palutena's guide). Therefore, the bounce of his pills is slower than
