This guide aims to take the knowledge that I have learned as a Human Kinetics student and apply it to the Super Smash Bros. franchise.
I have searched all over for practice tips that talk about the specifics of how or the best way to practice. I see a lot of guides and tutorials that say what to practice, but this guide will tell you how.
Let me preface this by saying that this is not my research. This is simply knowledge from school that can be applied to Smash Bros.
In 2002, Shoenfelt et al conducted a study about practice. Essentially what they did was take groups of people, make them practice in different ways, and then test their abilities on shooting free throws in basketball. There were 4 groups. The first group shot only from the foul line (as this is where one would shoot a free throw from). The second group shot 2 ft behind and 2 ft in front of the free throw line (never from the free throw line itself). The third group shot 2 ft in front, 2 ft behind and from the free throw line. Lastly, the fourth group shot from the outsides of the court and the inside top of the key (never from the free throw line). What they found was that the first group (the ones who only shot from the free throw line) actually improved the least when tested. The most improved group was the third group (the ones that shot 2ft in front, 2ft behind, and from the free throw line).
Now what does this mean for Smash Bros.? Well, take a technique like wave dashing for example. According to this study, the worst way to improve would be to pick a character, then pick Final Destination, start at one end, and try to wavedash successfully to the other side of the stage. This also means that the best way to practice a wavedash would be to pick a character, pick any stage, and then try and wavedash in different directions and at different lengths.
