The Basic Fundamentals And a General Introduction to Competitive Smash 4.

Hello everyone and thank you for checking out my guide! Let's get on to step 1.

Step 1: Picking your main and secondary.
Now this is one of the most important steps to becoming a good Smash player. You need to find a character that you like. If you want to win a ton, you may want to play a high tier. Although don't get it twisted, every high tier is hard to play. But if you want to play a low tier like me (I main Little Mac.) you can do it. Smash is a fighting game where you can play almost anyone in tournaments. But if you have chosen to play a low/mid tier you will have bad match ups against the top 5 in the game, and Shiek, Rosa Luma, Sonic, Yoshi, Pikachu, can do what your character can do except about 10 times easier (Assuming you don't play the top 5). If you play a low tier, you could always have a secondary that covers your bad match ups. All in all, go for who you like the most, start learning the tech, and go get 'em!

Step 2: Character tools.
Now that you have a main, learn what your character struggles with. If you know what your opponent's character struggles with, try to force your opponent in to that situation. And try to never make a move when you don't have to if you play a bait and punish character. (Falcon, Ganon, etc.) If you play a rushdown character than always try to stay in their face, when you play a rushdown character always watch for "Get off me" moves. For example Pac-man's N-air, it comes out frame 3, and has insane priority. And for zoning characters, never let your opponent get close to you as most zoners don't have good pokes to keep your opponent off of you.

Step 3: Defense and Offense.
Defense is very strong in this game, if you want to play well in this game, you have to shield a lot, and spot dodges and rolls are really good in this game. Although it can still be punished hard. And as for offense, you apply good shield pressure. Moves that are safe on shield are really good for poking. Grabs are good for getting through shields and grabs usually lead to combos.

Step 4: Combos.
Combos are vastly different than your traditional fighters in this game. You can usually make up your own combos, go to practice mode and look at the combo hit counter to see if it's a guaranteed combo. Most combos depend on reading their DI (Directional Influence).

Step 5: Choosing a Stage That Benefits Your Characters.
Now that you know how to combo and such, go to practice mode and see on what tournament legal stages let your character kill the earliest.

Step 6: Picking the Correct Match-Up.
Go and see what tools can shut each character down. (Note: Not every character has the tools to shut some characters down.) For example, Shiek is nearly unstoppable. The only MU shiek is even with is well, Shiek. Although even though Shiek has no bad MUs, she's still beatable.

Step 7: Be confident (And Closing Message)
Never fear your opponent's character. Always try to pick an even or winning MU if you can. Thanks once again for reading. Good luck in your future endeavors.
