Land Cancelling (SSB4)

*Note: I don't know if there is an official name for this mechanic, but for the sake of this guide, I will refer to it as "land cancelling." Also, this technique may be possible in the earlier versions of Smash, but I haven't tried it yet.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What Is "Land Cancelling?"

Land cancelling is when you cut off (or cancel) part of an air attack by landing on the ground. Landing on the ground at the right time during an air attack will cause the ending animation of the attack to be replaced by a short landing animation. This can be utilized in a number of different ways, but it can most notably be used for combos.

About Land Cancel Combos

Land cancel combos are combos that contain a land cancel. (I'm sorry, I know that's obvious...) They may sound difficult and complicated, but they are actually really simple. In order to pull one off, however, you will need to be quick and have good timing. I would recommend doing some land cancel combos a few times in Training Mode, just to get the feel of it. *It's important to note that not all characters have land cancel combos. You'd be surprised to see what characters do or don't have these combos. Even some slow characters can do them. The next section will teach you how to do one of these and some examples of land cancel combos.

How To Do Land Cancel Combos

When you use the attack you are going to land cancel, be sure to do it as close to the ground as possible, but don't do it to close to the ground. If you do, it will cancel the attack completely. Different attacks have different landing times, so be sure to time each land cancel individually, depending on the attack. And, now a few examples (see below).

Examples

Combo #1 (Lucario): (This one is simple, repetitive, and can only be pulled off at low-to-semi-high percentages): ForwardAir > *land cancel* > *jump* > ForwardAir > *jump* > ForwardAir

Combo #2 (Zero Suit Samus): (Zero Suit Samus is perhaps the best character to use for land cancel combos. This simple combo is really good. It works at almost any percentage and it can KO at just 70%): UpAir > *land cancel* > *jump (only if opponent is at high percentage)* > UpSpecial (towards opponent)

Combo #3 (Ike): (Wait, Ike has one? Yep, but it does have a slow startup, so use with caution. This only works at low-to-mid percentages): UpAir > *land cancel* > UpSpecial

Experiment on your own and see what combos you can come up with!! Please feel free to share any combos you discover in the comments below! :D

Conclusion
I hope that this helped you get a little bit better at Smash. This is my first guide on Smashboards and I only made it because I discovered this "land cancelling." Please feel free to leave me any questions, comments, or critiques. Well... I don't know how to end this so...
