The most optimistic way I could describe vibrant is "Colorful Vomit." As a graphic/web designer it gave me web standard nightmares. I did a presentation in one of my classes about how awful it was.

I was there for said presentation. It was pretty spot on imo.

This is league's better than vibrant though.

Except the font for posts. Please change the damn font to something less serif-y.

Like this. This is perfect. Do this.

John has tried to change the font a couple times already but it doesn't seem to be working. :(

I know people are at risk of being blasted when they don't stick to art 101 standards like, "don't use more than two colors", but Vibrant was EXCELLENT execution. I'll hear nothing of it. I really liked the previous schemes Smashboards had before it, and it was a really abrupt change that I think freaked a lot of people out, but it was just so so well done.

If you can appreciate Brawl's colorful aesthetic, Vibrant was a gorgeous reflection of it. Give me this powerpoint. I want to hear more of your terrible opinions.

I have to agree with Meno on this one
It was well executed.
Rules were meant to be broken as well
Except the no more than 3 different font types rule

Vibrant was clean and colorful

Though I like this layout too

Also, I think it's too early to complain about this layout
Give Bio and the others working on the site a chance to let the dust settle and get some annoying bugs fixed before we force even more change on them. They did a great job and the site looks awesome

Thanks guys!!!!!

That's much better Bionic, thanks! :bee:

Of?

It wasn't the abrupt change that freaked (most) people out, it was that it was just a bad design.

If you can appreciate Brawl's colorful aesthetic, Vibrant was a gorgeous reflection of it.
And by, "colorful aesthetic," do you mean the one with the blue-ish tint over everything minus the menus? Right.

Give me this powerpoint. I want to hear more of your terrible opinions.
So you can disregard them with nothing but your clear ignorance about this subject behind you? I'll pass.

Woah, no need to get so defensive. I'm asking you to elaborate.

I'm willing to hear an objective analysis. It's important to do so in these threads, otherwise it's just a drone of shallow complaints like "it has too many colors".

Substantiate your opinions. Maybe the site sucked. I really liked it though.

Nobody answered my question. :( What new features did Vibrant bring in before, aside from a revamped color scheme?
Mostly the User CP button. They changed it from a teeny text link to a big button on the bar.

IT WAS THE BEST BUTTON EVER

When you say things like "I want to hear more of your terrible opinions." I think that gives me plenty of reason to get to defensive.

I have problems with the theme itself, doesn't mean everyone who likes it is automatically wrong, you are allowed your opinion. If you want to have an actual discussion in greater detail about the reasonings on my distaste for Vibrant I don't think this is the right place for that, though.

You can call my opinion terrible too! That's the thing about opinions, anyone can have them and they don't really mean anything - unless you back them up with objective content!

Talking about the flaws of a past revamp seem very relevant when discussing a new one. You don't have to give me the entire presentation. Give me bullet points!

Not just a pick me up. Total rehaul that adds a lot of dimensions to the site.

I was scared smashboards would become a relic of the past, but this is going to inject so much life. When Smash 4 hits, this is going to be an enormous property.

I would have to see it again, but off the top of my head: Elements were misaligned/it didn't follow any sort of organizational theme or grid, there was no apparent color scheme - some colors appeared once (sometimes in downright inappropriate places) and never showed up again (same with fonts too), and yes, you can easily follow a visible color scheme even with an apparent "rainbow" theme. Extra effects like the drop-shadow were unnecessary, they didn't have any sort of meaning, they were added simply because the designer had the ability to, they were just an an extreme misuse of white space (same with the backroom/staff links on the front page, they were put there just because they could be, that room could've been used for more productively like the sidebar does on this theme, with things actual users would use often).

MMM designed that theme with himself in mind, nothing more. He had no vision or intent with the majority of his decisions, if you asked him why he put something where I can bet you 99% of the time his answer would consist mostly of mumbling and hand gestures.

On another note, that layout screamed anything but professional, which is definitely not the message a big-time site like this wants to be putting out there.

The colors are only a small part of Vibrant's problems, if you made it monochrome it would still be violation of everything I have learned in the past 7 years.

ALSO, the header itself wasn't bad. If it had been made smaller and then he continued with that theme throughout the entire page, it would have worked much better. Instead, it just feels completely cut off from the rest of the site, floating there at the top all by itself eating all the snacks and leaving none for anyone else. Selfish ****.

This font is way better. Thanks for taking care of that. I didn't even notice it right away because it WASN'T standing out, as opposed to the old font which was annoying me in every post.

The tippy typey box still has the old font, but I can live with that.

Myeaaaaa, nitpicking. I guess I'd have to be a designer to be more upset with the minor details. Good points, I'd like them more visually explained to me, but I understand your critique. Still, I think it was an overall wonderful package that gave the average user an upgraded site.

Plus the colors were beautifully timeless. Maybe the individuals elements could have been better organized, but it's lasting impression - which is all that matters now really - was crystalline, sparkling, and playful. Metal did an outstanding job for not having a team.

Smashboards needs a new logo though. I loved the last header. This orange grey thing is death.

A front page for the site? That's a great idea. The new font is a good change, thanks for taking the criticisms into account and improving the re-design.

If you'd address the issues posted earlier in the thread by Junahu and I, that would be appreciated. Foremost, the posts not having their own pages is giving the Make Your Move archives big problems.

Also, I noticed that we can no longer multi-quote posts anymore. :(
This. Multi-quoting would be appreciated.

Also, I found out how to "multi-quote". Every time you click "Reply", the sub-forum flings you to the message box, which automatically quotes the message you're replying to. If you click on more "Reply" links, the quotes stack up in your message box. This would be extremely cool IF doing this didn't continuously bring me to the message box EVERY time I clicked "Reply".
This seems more like a manual work around than a design solution. Quoting a single post should throw you down to the response box whereas multi-quoting is simply the absence of that command so that it is easier to reach the next post without needing to backtrack from the bottom of the screen. Not a particularly big issue, but multi-quoting is fairly staple feature on most boards i.e. VBulletin.

Is there any way to save drafts or something like that? I used to PM myself for SWF formatted things but you can't PM yourself anymore. Editing old messages that I sent and putting my stuff there works so it's not a big deal but I was wondering.

This is a really good design. I do miss a "User CP" button that automatically had the subscribed threads, and if I were you I would create a redirect for www.smashboards.com/usercp.php to www.smashboards.com/watched/threads, as the landing page for both serve the same function. I personally only accessed sboards through usercp.php, so now when I type in "sm" into the adress bar I get the usercp link. :B

All in all this is pretty solid. It'll take some getting used to but it looks to be pretty future proof and has good options for "social media" and the like. Seems like it'd be good for mobile as well, but I wouldn't know at this time.
THIS.
Please give us our usercp back. Can't use smashboards without it

The banners under the avatars to denote premium membership or some type of membership is an eyesore (Check out Jam Stunna). Why are those COOL postbits gone? Also, why does Smashboards still allow you to select your Smash mains but it doesn't even display it? (It probably does in your profile info but who looks at that?) The postbits – once again – were the coolest things about getting to choose your main.

Bleh.
There are quite a few things that aren't working currently because THE CONVERSION ISN'T COMPLETE YET.

Patience.

Some quick questions... does the new software have the "Live Posting" feature for threads that recieved a reply in the last 5 minutes?

If it currently hasn't, will it have later?

Thanks in advance.

They should've just stayed with the old forum. There was nothing wrong with it outside of maybe blogs being derpy and groups being clunky and unused.

Social Groups are the hardest because there's a lot to convert to the new version. I'm not half done that importer either. Keep in mind I'm doing everything alone, not getting paid, with a full-time college student schedule and the homework that goes along with it, so I'm trying to get this done as fast as I can.
I would like to see you do it faster.

Stop being such a douchebag because you're buttmad about one of the 34567876543 possible means of communication between your circle-jerk crew being cut off temporarily.

Enough, no need to bicker over it.

Staying on the old forums was a giant security breach just waiting to happen. It has been said multiple times, but I will say it again - vBulletin 3 (which we were on) was no longer receiving any support, including security updates. Hosting over 115 thousand members, this would have been a massive blow, whether personal information was breached and stolen or not. For the future security of the site, we had to find new software.

I'm sorry that this transition was not the smoothest, but rest assured that the administrators and developers are reading this thread, and we are considering each issue mentioned.

I've already been working myself to restore some old functionality, namely who is viewing threads, skins, and layout modifications. Other more advanced features, like Usergroups, for example, are handled in a vastly different manner on Xenforo. No conversion utilities or scripts exist for them, so we need to create these from scratch. I know that people want this and other features back, and we developers are actively trying to do everything we can to restore these. However, all developers here are 100% volunteers, meaning that we don't get paid and have to balance SWF with other obligations (be them education, employment, etc). We really want to help make this site the best thing since sliced bread, and are actively working towards it.

My thanks go to the people who have been posting constructive criticism without just bashing on the new site. Please continue to suggest/report any problems here, and know that yes we are seeing and working on them.

In addition, if you have any questions then please post them here - I don't want it to seem like the developers, etc, are separating from members. We're all part of the same community, and I don't want something like a change in forums to be tearing that apart.

Well said, John2k4. Just keep working as best as you can, because, like you said, developing the site is voluntary work and things take their own time. I admit I am not a big fan of changes, but I should let you know you have my support to have the site to work nicely.

Reporting another bug... I don't know if someone else is having this problem, but sometimes, the links in the forums overall stop working, forcing me to reload the page in order for them to work fine. Those links usually involve pop up messages like what happens when you edit a post, for example.
