I guess "relevancy" kind of matters, but if a character feels very unique in Smash and is popular, it shouldn't be cut just because of "relevancy" imo. I advise you to not vote for characters you could cut without much regret or don't care about at all, and vote for everyone else.

I like that this poll has so many options! Here are some of the notable ones that I voted for:

• Sceptile: I think Pokemon could actually use another rep after Mewtwo and Sceptile would be the best fit. He completes the Fire/Water/Grass trio of fully evolved starters, is well-fit for a Smash design and would be fun to play as.
• Pokemon Trainer Hoenn and Sinnoh: Alternatively, if Sakurai and the dev team get Pokemon Trainer working, I'd like to see a Hoenn version with Sceptile/Grovyle, Blaziken, and Swampert/Mudkip used. I also voted Sinnoh because 4th gen bias.
  
• Tails, Knuckles and Shadow: I'm a really big Sonic fan and I think the Sonic series is the 3rd party character series that most deserves to have a 2nd or even a 3rd representative in Smash Bros. due to its close relationship to Nintendo and wide variety of popular characters. Tails and Knuckles (and Eggman I suppose) are really the only ones with a chance, but I voted for Shadow too just because he's my favorite Sonic character. I think all of them would have great and interesting gameplay to offer in Smash.
• Zero: While Megaman X is the only Megaman game I've played, I still have a lot of respect for Zero and I think he should be represented as well in Smash. Megaman is probably just as deserving of a second character in Smash as Sonic is and Zero is really the only one that fits the bill. His sword in combination with his laser projectiles would make him a unique character.
• Ryu Hayabusa: As a long-time fan of the Dead or Alive series and main of Hayabusa, I would be ecstatic to see him in Smash someday. He certainly has the background for it, debuting in trilogy of popular Ninja Gaiden games on the NES and later going on to be on Nintendo consoles in Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, Dead or Alive Dimensions and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge. He would separate himself from fellow ninjas Greninja and Sheik by being a bit slower, more grappling-focused (IZUNAS!), and more weapon-oriented with his Dragon Sword, bow and other weapons.
• Rayman and Bomberman: Two great third party "men" with a tight base around Nintendo consoles.
• Dixie Kong and King K. Rool: I would be okay with either of these characters from DKC, despite never playing a Donkey Kong game.
• Wolf: The most undeserving veteran to get cut imo. A unique and relevant character from a popular series like Wolf getting dropped like that is just sad.
• Lucas: I forgot to vote for Lucas, unfortunately, but I thought he was fun in Brawl and should be brought back. Ness' customs kind of steal a good amount of his uniqueness though.

Assist trophies in the next game and characters that are irrelevant like sayyyy sylux can become more likely from a new game.

Hasn't changed that much. However, almost all veterans are more desirable than any of the newcomers (which King K. Rool leads).
