Smash Brothers University 1.5
Presented by:
Bubbaking and the Anime Plus Club at Stony Brook University
April 28th, 2013
We are back! And this time it's bigger and better!
The moment you've all been waiting for has finally arrived: a Melee and Project M tournament on Long Island!
Size: Last year our venue was big enough to hold over 10 setups. We didnt think that was big enough so this time we are more than doubling the venue size!
Prizes: To celebrate SBU 1.5 we are adding a base pot of at least $100 to the Melee singles pot. We love our Melee here in SBU and we want to up the hype for Melee as much as we can.
1) The venue fee includes 3 tickets. Each ticket can either get you (1) water bottle or (1) slice of cheese pizza.
2) Additional tickets will cost $1.00.
3) The tickets will be used for a raffle which will be held at the end of the event. Prizes are yet to be determined.
I will be updating this thread as time progresses with specific directions, fees, and scheduling info as well as changes!
Note: To help this event run smoothly, we are in dire need of extra setups. If you are definitely bringing setups for the event, please post it here so we can schedule this event as efficiently as possible. Discounts for setups are listed below.
Location:
Stony Brook University
Stony Brook, NY 11790
Directons:
Super shout outs to TheGrape for finding this stuff for me! I was kinda having a little trouble getting the maps and everything but this guy just steamrolled everything for me! :awesome:
Venue info:
Tournament is being held in the GLS/HDV Center at Roosevelt Quad
1) Location of GLS/HDV Center is circled in red. This event will be held in the 2nd floor of the building
2) Parking is outlined in dark blue and is free
3) Green highlights the food court location. Its just across the street. Food there is decent but overpriced. I'd suggest you bring in food from outside as it would be cheaper. There could also be a possibility of pitching in money and having pizza delivered.
Directions to venue:
Public Transportation:
Stony Brook is easily accessible via LIRR. In fact, the train station is inside campus. Taking the train from Penn Station to Stony Brook takes less than 2 hours. Walking from the train station to the GLS/HDV center takes roughly 10 minutes.
Direction for walking is shown here
Car:
Take the LIE to Exit 62 and head towards Nicolls Rd/Blue Point/Stony Brook. Once at Nicolls Rd, keep going until you reach the South Entrance. In which case you will make a left.
Here is a map which shows the directions to the venue from Nicolls Rd
Here is the Google Maps directions starting with the left turn from Nicolls
1. Turn left onto South Dr
2. Turn right onto Marburger Dr
3. At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit onto Circle Rd
4. Turn left onto Roosevelt Dr
5. Take the 1st right onto Kelly Dr
6. Take the 1st right onto West Dr

Venue Fee - $10
Melee Singles Entry Fee - $10
Melee Doubles Entry Fee - $10 ($5 per person)

  • Final Destination
  • Dream Land
Counterpick:

  • Pokemon Stadium
Stage Bans

  • For Best of 3 sets, each player gets 1 stage ban.
  • For Best of 5 sets, there are no stage bans.
  • For Best of 7 sets, DSRM is enabled for the 7th match, but the winner of the 6th match is allowed one stage ban, to be used after the 6th match is played.

Doubles Stage List

Starters/Neutrals:
  • Yoshi’s Story
  • Pokemon Stadium
  • Battlefield
  • Final Destination
  • Dream Land
Counterpick:

  • DK 64
  • Jungle Japes
Stage Bans

  • For Best of 3 sets, each team gets 2 stage bans. Teams may ban up to one neutral stage and one counterpick stage. One team cannot ban both counterpick stages.
  • For Best of 5 sets, each team gets 1 stage ban.
  • For Best of 7 sets, there are no stage bans.

General Rules

  • Items are set to off.
  • Stock and Time are set to 4 stock and 8 minutes, respectively.
  • Double Blind*: If elected.
  • Contest Port Priority*: If elected.
  • Neutral Start*: If elected.
  • Standard DSR*
  • Gentleman’s Clause*
  • Forced Character Selection*: Off
  • Matches that time out will be determined by the remaining number of lives, then percentage of the current stock. In the event of a percentage tie, the match should be replayed in full. Sudden Death is not to be played, and will not count.
Additional Rules for Teams Play
  • Team Attack: ON.
  • Life Stealing is allowed.
  • If the game is paused accidentally while attempting to steal a life, the opposing team may deem that life forfeit. Wait until the announcer has finished saying defeated before pressing start, or turn pause off prior to beginning the match.
How to Play a Set
  1. Players select their characters. Either player may elect to Double Blind.
  2. Use Stage Striking* to determine the first stage.
  3. The players play the first match of the set.
Prior to starting this match, either player may elect to Contest Port Priority or Neutral Start.
Note: Only one of these two may be used, as both have a built in Port Selection mechanism using RPS. If there is a situation where a player would like to change which option they elected after playing the game of RPS, it is the opponent’s choice to allow it. The results from the previously played game of RPS will carry over.
  4. Winning player of the preceding match bans a stage/stages (if applicable).
  5. The losing player of the preceding match picks a stage for the next match.
  6. The winning player of the preceding match may choose to change characters.
  7. The losing player of the preceding match may choose to change characters.
  8. The losing player of the preceding match gets first pick of port. Either player may elect for a Neutral Start, but RPS will not be played to determine first pick.
  9. The next match is played.
  10. Repeat Steps 4 through 9 for all subsequent matches until the set is complete.
General Knowledge

Players are responsible for their own general welfare in regard to the tournament environment. In other words, players are responsible for:

  1. Stage List and Rule Set Familiarity
  2. Venue and Entry Fees
  3. Arriving On Time
  4. Maintaining Personal Hygiene
  5. Controllers and Character Knowledge
  6. Minimizing Whining
Tournament Hosts should keep the following in mind:

  • Tournament sets are usually based on bracket positions, which may be seeded at your discretion. If your tournament is to be run in any other format, you must advertise it accordingly.
  • Some kind of stalling prevention is highly recommended. Since a definition of stalling is too potentially ambiguous here, all instances of stalling are determined by you.
  • Unnecessary delays in a set should be discouraged. These delays can occur before (players not playing the set), during (players taking an unnecessary amount of time to counterpick) or after (players not reporting results) a set. The tournament Host is recommended to keep tabs on set status and completion.
  • No more than the previous match should be replayed in the event of a rule violation. It is recommended that any disputes be brought promptly and quickly to the Tournament Host’s attention. Special exceptions may be made to this rule per your discretion.
  • When running a pool, the game count of each set should be recorded (whether the set was 2-0 or 2-1). Ranking in a pool is determined by the number of sets won. There are several methods of determining a tie-break, but each has advantages and disadvantages. It is the TO's responsibility to determine which method they will be using, advertise which method they will be using in the tournament thread, and to consistently use that method across all pools during the tournament.
  • The semi-final and championship sets should be, at minimum, Best of 5.
  • Wireless controllers should be discouraged or banned due to interference, unreliability, and time hindrance.
  • The Tournament Host reserves the right to, at any time, make anyone leave the premises of the tournament.
  • For all Melee Tournaments, Metaknight is banned.
***Term Definitions***

  • Double Blind: Either player may request that a double blind selection occur. In this situation, a 3rd party should be told, in secret, each of player’s choices for the first round. Both players are to then select their first round character, with the 3rd party validating that the character selected is the same as their word.
  • Contest Port Priority: If an agreement cannot be made as to who gets what port, the players may enact a best of 1 game of Rock Paper Scissors. Winner gets their port selection, loser selects any other port.
  • Neutral Start: Either player may enact this rule. Once enacted, both players may only use one of the two “Neutral Starting Positions”. A best of one game of Rock Paper Scissors may be used to determine who gets the higher port. If one player elects to Contest Port Priority and the other elects to Neutral Start, Neutral Start takes priority.
    Singles:
    FD - Ports 1 & 2
    FoD - Ports 1 & 2
    YS - Ports 1 & 2
    DL64 - Ports 2 & 4
    BF - Ports 3 & 4
    PS - Ports 3 & 4

    Doubles:
    FD - Ports 1 & 3 vs Ports 2 & 4
    PS - Ports 1 & 4 vs Ports 2 & 3
    BF - Ports 1 & 4 vs Ports 2 & 3
    YS - Ports 1 & 4 vs Ports 2 & 3
    DL - Ports 1 & 4 vs Ports 2 & 3
For the counterpick stages not listed here: Take the 20 seconds to figure it out.
  • Standard DSR: A player/team may not counterpick to a stage they have won on.
  • DSR Modified: A player/team may not counterpick to the stage they last won on.
  • Gentleman’s Clause: Any stage may be played on if both players agree to it. This rule takes priority over DSR.
  • Forced Character Selection: The losing player once had the option to select Random Stage as their counterpick and remove the option to change characters from the winner of the previous round. This is no longer legal. If a player wishes to select Random Stage as their counterpick, the winner of the previous round may choose to change their character.
  • Stage Striking: Players eliminate stages from the Starter/Neutral list until there is one stage remaining.
    Players strike stages in this order: P1 - P2 - P2 - P1

Stage Bans

  • For all sets, each player gets 5 stage bans.
General Rules
  • Items are set to off.
  • Stock and Time are set to 4 stock and 8 minutes, respectively.
  • Double Blind: If elected. Either player/team may request that a double blind selection occur. In this situation, a 3rd party should be told, in secret, the choice(s) of each player/team for the first round. Both players/teams are to then select their first round characters, with the 3rd party validating that the characters selected are the same as their word.
  • Contest Port Priority: If elected. If an agreement cannot be made as to who gets what port, the players may enact a single game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Winner gets their port selection, loser selects any other port(s).
  • Modified Dave's Stupid Rule (MDSR) will be used. A player/team may not counterpick to any stage they won on during the set.
  • Gentleman’s Clause. Any stage may be played on if both players agree to it. This rule takes priority over MDSR.
  • No Forced Character Selection
  • Matches that time out will be determined by the remaining number of lives, then percentage of the current stock. In the event of a percentage tie, play a 1 stock 3 minute match on the same stage. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Sudden Death is not to be played, and will not count.
  • If the match goes to Sudden Death due to a suicide move (Ganon's side-B, DDD's swallow, holding someone in a grab on a platform as it moves out of the boundaries, etc.), the one who initiated the move wins.
Additional Doubles Rules:
  • Team Attack: ON. In other words, "friendly fire" must be allowed.
  • Life Stealing is allowed.
  • Ports must be P1 & P4 vs P2 & P3. Either team can Contest Port Priority in order to decide which team gets a specific port configuration.
Set Procedure:
  1. Players/teams select their characters. Either player/team may elect to Double Blind pick.
  2. Use Stage Striking to determine the first stage. The order of Stage Striking is P1-P2-P2-P1-P1-P2.
  3. The players/teams play the first match of the set. Prior to starting this match, either player/team may elect to Contest Port Priority.
  4. The winning player/team of the preceding match bans up to 4 stages (5 stages in doubles) out of the legal stagelist. Each player/team gets a total of 4 stage bans (5 stage bans in doubles) for the entire set.
  5. The losing player/team of the preceding match picks a stage for the next match.
  6. The winning player/team of the preceding match may choose to change characters.
  7. The losing player/team of the preceding match may choose to change characters.
  8. The losing player/team of the preceding match gets first pick of port(s).
  9. The next match is played.
  10. Repeat Steps 5 through 9 for all subsequent matches until the set is complete.
Hopefully this is everything. Details are subject to change. Let me know if you think something is missing.

Definitely up for this, hopefully this will have a pretty good turnout. I'll try and spread the word.

From Port Authority just take the A,C,E to 34th and take the LIRR straight from there.

As for expected turnout, last year we had around 30 people come. So I'd say 50 is a safe minimum this time but Im expecting significantly more than that if we can hype this up properly. I know for sure that we're getting more people from campus and LI/Suffolk area this time. Not sure about other regions but the venue can effectively hold over 100 people so theres plenty of room.

Previous tournament results are here

Other logistical things we have to worry about:
We'd like to get a solid headcount as the date approaches so we can get enough pizza and water bottles for everyone.
Also need to know how much setups we're getting for scheduling purposes.

Ill take a large pepperoni, extra cheese, mushroom, pepper, buffalo chicken, meatball, pie wit a dash of garlic powder and marijuana for good measure.

Take the A, C, E, to 34th? And LIRR straight from there?

Let's say I've never done this before.... can you have some noob-proof specific instructions on how to get there, as well as a number to call. I may consider it if the instructions are really good. Unless someone wants to pick me up from port authority and carpool here?

Alright, you got it

The current set of directions was made primarily for people who live in the LI area. Hopefully these set of directions are better. Right now it only covers the usage of public transportation. I can make one with driving directions if someone requests it (although Google Maps should suffice).

(It seems I cant use spoiler tags. Can someone that can use spoiler tags repost this so it doesnt take up a huge space?)

Directions for New York City / Out of State Travelers (using the train)
0) Arrive at NYC using whatever mode of transportation you require

1) Use the subway to get you from your drop-off spot to 34th St and 8th Ave (34 Street - Penn Station).

The trains that will take you directly there are the A, C, and E trains.
I know that Bolt Bus drops people off around the area.
NJ Transit takes you directly to Penn Station as well.

For the people who use a bus which takes them to Port Authority Bus Terminal, the bus station itself is situated on top of a subway station. This station is the 42nd St - Port Authority Bus Terminal. Luckily for you, the A, C, and E trains stop at this station. Take one of these trains Downtown to 34 Street - Penn Station which is 1 stop over.

If you are wondering whether you are at the right place or not, walk up to street level. If you see the Madison Square Garden then you are at the right spot.

This is what MSG looks like

34th Street - Penn Station Area

Red line - 8th Avenue
Green arrows - Directions to take you to Penn Station. Go to one of those spots and go down.

2) Now we are at Penn Station. It is a pretty huge station but we are interested in going to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) terminal so go find that.

3) Once you are in the terminal, go buy a Off Peak (this is a weekend) train ticket to Stony Brook.

Lets first tackle ticket costs.
Buy your train ticket ahead of time. If not your wallet will cry. Buying ahead of time means buying from a machine or from a booth rather than buying a ticket inside the train. For comparison purposes, I'll put the price of tickets when buying inside the train in italics

Penn to Stony Brook is $12.75 ($19.00) one-way, $25.50 ($38.00) two-way.

For the folks in Brooklyn who wants to take the LIRR from Atlantic Terminal, price is the same but you will have to transfer at Jamaica.

If you don't know how to buy from a machine it goes like this:
a) Ticket: One-Way or Two-Way
b) Ticket Type: Off Peak
c) Destination: S -> More Choices -> Stony Brook
d) Etc: Ticket Only (No Metrocard)
e) Payment Method: Cash/Credit Card
f) Receipt?

Train Schedule
Use this very convenient website to plan your train schedule:
http://lirr42.mta.info/schedules.php

I'll just show you pictures which should explain the process much better.

Set it up like above and click on Schedules. You should see this.

The only things that are relevant are the ones under Depart and Arrive. Off Peak means you pay the price I listed above. I will explain Transfer on the next step.

4) This is tricky. You will take the train to Huntington (SB is on Port Jefferson line). The reason is that the trip is cut into two halves. The first train will take you to the last stop of its line and the second train will pick you up from there until you hit Stony Brook station.

Here is what I mean in another list format:
a) Get on Huntington train from Penn Station
b) Get off Huntington Station. Stay on the same platform!
c) Get on Port Jefferson train from Huntington Station
d) Get off Stony Brook Station.

5) Welcome to Stony Brook University. The train conveniently drops you inside campus grounds. Now follow the walking directions on the image below. Note: You are walking the opposite direction of the train you just took.

I hope this was more helpful than the one I posted before. If you have more questions then feel free to ask.

Edit: I'll post my phone # as it gets closer to the date. Although I hope someone else does it since Im not really a fan of leaving my phone # over the net

Melee rules are up. I apologize in advance for any wonky collapse tags. The top collapses in each pair of 'doubled up' collapse tags is SUPPOSED to be empty. Don't be surprised to find nothing in them. This new SWF is really wacky.

Please RSVP your attendance status (Coming, Maybe, Not Coming) at the top of this page and also state whether you are bringing a set-up, and what kind(s), in the small message box next to the attendance status. Click "post" to submit everything.

Edit: P:M rules will be up soon. They will be the rules featured at the Xanadu Monthly. Only difference is that SSE Jungle will be replaced with Pictochat for Singles. For doubles, SSE Jungle and Hyrule Castle will be legal. Metal Cavern will not be legal for doubles.

Looking at people from campus + a couple of locals around the area, at least 30. This isnt counting anyone coming over from NYC or beyond. Also havent counted people who didnt show up last time that might make it this time. We will do a preliminary headcount sometime this week since we will be allocating money for the refreshments. If things turn out as expected, I actually do see us getting 50 or more.

Going to come for friendlies, most likely. Going to play melee singles and doubles as well, but not expecting much from my first tourney haha. Doesn't matter how it goes for me though, just a chance to enjoy the smash community will be fun :) and hopefully I get to see m2k play in person :p lol

Sweet. I'll definitely get some friendlies in with you, there's like ZERO Docs out here.
And it's always cool going to your first tournament. I went to my first tournament about 9 months ago, and it was crazy.
It shatters your perception of how good you are quite a bit. Don't be discouraged :D

Haha I know. My friends were like ?????? What?????? When I pulled out doc for the first time haha. They're all S/A tier mains, so a C tier just seemed stupid to them haha. As it does to most I guess. It's fun though :) and yeah, I'd love to get some friendlies in

Don't forget to RSVP at the top with your setup-bringing details, guys!

there's like ZERO Docs out here.
Actually, we used to have a few Doc mains at SBU, but they either moved out or stopped playing Doc. :ohwell:

Haha I know. My friends were like ?????? What?????? When I pulled out doc for the first time haha. They're all S/A tier mains, so a C tier just seemed stupid to them haha. As it does to most I guess. It's fun though :) and yeah, I'd love to get some friendlies in
Indeed. Lower tiered chars can carry you sometimes simply because most people don't know how to play against them. :p

I could bring a PM setup.... problem is idk if I'm staying til 9, for PM singles. I'm not competing in them, but a friend might, so if he does I'll bring a setup. I would bring melee as well, but my disc is a bit scratched :( so wouldn't want whoever is using it to have to reset during the tournament

Idk Roy can be weird to play against, i guess. Most are more familiar with the Marth matchup, so don't exactly prepare for the differences between them, so it can be difficult againt a good Roy. But I wouldn't say no one knows the matchup, and even so people can infer/adapt.

I don't even play this game and you have trouble beating my Roy with Samus randomly.

An impressive resume that does not make.

I'm honored that your very first and maybe last post was used to make that statement. ;)

That's weird though, because if you can beat Marth solidly, you shouldn't have any trouble with Roy, IMO. I don't think it's like Doc/Mario where Mario is legit better than Doc at a few things. Everything good that Roy can do, outside of sideB, Marth can do just as well, and Roy's sideB is a funny gimmick that can be blown up in the most laughable of ways the instant you remember how to CC/shieldgrab. Pika/Pichu is another example of this 'complete clone inferiority', I reckon.

I never said I had trouble with the Roy matchup haha. In many ways I do better with it than v. a Marth, as the recovery is much easier to cape/edge guard w/ doc and since he's not as floaty, to chain grab with ICs (my secondary) What I meant by that was the matchup is a bit different, in the sense that roy operates differently than Marth in a few distinct ways, so if you go into it playing like you would v. Marth, you will make some mistakes
