That is the thing I noticed, a lot of people would probably be fine with kid icarus content if other series were represented better and more (Donkey kong, Metroid, Starfox, Etc.)

The Kid Icarus series only has a ton of content in the 3DS version because Sakurai and the development team had assets from Kid Icarus: Uprising, his previous project. It was easy to port over a ton of content without spending much time and budget on it.

I doubt it was a case of him intentionally promoting his previous game, but a way to add a lot of content to the game without spending resources.

Kid Icarus and Pokemon are the two (in my opinion) that are very over represented.
One could also include Mario (if you include Yoshi/Wario in there too). But because Nintendo is Mario in a way it's kind of forgiven.

You forgot the fact that DK only gets two songs, only one of them a remix, while Kid Icarus gets like 7 songs and two of them are remixes. Also, Metroid got no new songs, no newcomer, a new stage from a disliked game rather than the Prime games...

It's not that hard to avoid it, to be honest...

Some well-timed rolls will make your life easier.

Plus, it probably sucks on big stages, such as, ironically, Palutena's Temple.

If you want to talk about underrepresented franchises, why is a third-party franchise getting the shaft for the second freaking time


With all the items, remixed music, unique stages &gets is nice and all but considering thatis getting screwed over makes me think that Nintendo can't let a 20+ year feud go.

Mario has way too many reps but all of his are understandable mainly because Dr. Mario is a veteran and deserves to be back so I really don't have a problem with it.

Kid Icarus and Fire Emblem have too many when compared to Kirby and DK who deserved another rep, but I love all the Fire Emblem characters and really only don't like Dark Pit(honestly though I like him better then normal Pit).

Overall I loved the roster even before but now I'm completely satisfied with the roster especially since they added !!!!!

They're the 2 biggest video game franchises ever and are owned by Nintendo, so I fail to see overrepresentation there since each franchise has every single major character covered (bar Toad or Meowth/Zoroark, but Zoroark's time is sadly over).

I want to vote Fire Emblem but its not even an option on the poll. Seriously, it has about the same amount of content as DK but it barely sells in comparison. Not that I'm complaining since I love Fire Emblem content.

Some franchises seem overrepresented only because other franchises got completely shafted up the rear such as Star Fox, EarthBound / Mother, Donkey Kong and Metroid. I bet that if any of those franchises didn't receive needless cuts or at least received some new content (DK got no ATs and almost no music), then I'm willing to bet that people wouldn't even care about how much content KI, Mario or Pokemon got.

Mario got a lot of love more than ever this time around, but it's logical, given he's the face of Nintendo and extremely popular in video games in general. I feel like the Mario series is finished in terms of content though, I doubt they'll get any new characters or something in the next game.

Sakurai is one of the few developers that work flat out on a game, so I don't think it's fair to call it laziness... More like he didn't want to delay the game until 2016 because they had to make all the assets from scratch.

Mario is justifiable for having a ton of content. The Mario series is not only Nintendo's best selling franchise, but it's the best selling franchise in gaming period. Rosalina and Bowser Jr. were also pretty popular choices for newcomers (Rosalina wasn't popular on here, but she was elsewhere), so we now have all of the core Mario characters (bar Toad) playable in Smash. I think this is perfect representation for the series.
The same can be said with Pokemon since the series is a juggernaut. You cannot deny how popular Pokemon is and how popular the cast of Pokemon that were chosen for this game.

The most overrepresented is easily Kid Icarus. I know that it was easy to port things over from Uprising to here, but the amount of KI content is still rather glaring, especially when it has only three games in the franchise. I agree that not many people would argue or hate it as much if other franchises, like Donkey Kong, got more representation.

No, your certainly not the only one. As much as I enjoy the DK, Star Fox and Metroid series, I don't really care about how much representation they've got or don't got, nor do I care about the representation other series have gotten like Mario and Pokemon. Who am I to say which franchise deserves more representation or not? For many, it's very subjective and personal. I'm not so focused on what franchise got more representation over other franchises cause really, at the end of the day, I play Smash to enjoy the celebration of all things Nintendo, not worry about who didn't get in or what series got shafted. Needless to say, the opinions on this matter differ greatly and personal bias with always play a factor in the opinion of series representation. I will say though, on a more personal note, that I do enjoy the greater attention to lesser known series like Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus. It raises awareness and it will hopefully prompt more people to play the games in said franchises so they can understand why they have a following and why they shouldn't be so overlooked over other more popular franchises like Mario and Pokemon.

I have to agree here. DK and Fox are so under represented in SSB4. FE is huge in Japan, and SSB is a Japanese game. But still, DK and fox did get the raw end of the stick here.

Needless to say, the opinions on this matter differ greatly and personal bias with always play a factor in the opinion of series representation.

If there was zero bias from anyone then all IPs would have the same number of playable characters, even Mario and Pokemon. That is clearly not the case. Everyone has bias (even Sakurai with KI). It's only human to be biased, we all are.

Also you do not need mountains of playable characters to advertise an IP. Melee had 2 Fire Emblem characters to advertise Fire Emblem, and that's all it needed. And it worked very well. Xenoblade has 1 character to advertise it in Smash4 and no one is complaining about that.

Why don't we include regular trophies while we're at it? That balances things out a bit. I believe Metroid has a whopping 13 trophies in the 3DS version, while Kid Icarus has only 59!
