Neat though Artsy Omni's Smashified Shovel Knight is, I really don't think he deserves a slot in Smash Brothers 4, especially over the likes of Ice Climbers, Lucas, Wolf, Takamaru, Snake, and Rayman.
Quoth the dude:

Well that's just uhm, like, your opinion, man.

If we got shovel knight as playable, does that mean free plague night dlc a year later as a playable smash character? I can hope.

Oh I will vote for him alright, along with Banjo Kazooie since Microsoft are apparently fine with the idea of them being Smash DLC.
Why would Nintendo want to promote a Microsoft character? Just what they need to do, create free advertising for their competition. Microsoft would undoubtedly capitalize on that with a new (and probably terrible) Banjo Kazooie game. It'd be an idiotic decision from Nintendo.

oh yes I'd want SK so badly

He'd be like one of those retro characters like IC or GW except he isn't and his trophy could be like "Shovel Knight first appeared in the NES game Shovel Knight. Haha, just kidding!" and I'd love it.

I'd have some ideas for a good moveset, but it wouldn't differ much from the op's probably

Shovel Knight has my vote! He is the perfect rep for indie platforms and already has a lot of potential for movement, moveset, and more. Also, it seems that a lot of people are already on board with giving Shovel Knight his time to shine. Hopefully we'll be able to strike the earth in the future of Smash.

I made a thing if anyone wants to use to help spread the word around. #shovelknight4smash

I'd like this, actually, even knowing how unlikely it is.

I vote for Shovelry.

Ah, Shovel Knight is like, a perfect character from a perfect game! Add me to the support list!

Eventually, I plan on making a professional grade moveset for the Blue Burrower. Might start out as text first, but we'll see.

Some dark alleyway.
I was thinking of having his side special be a sort of mix between the Propeller Dagger and the Knuckle Fist:
When used normally, it just ends up being the good old Propeller Dagger, being rather useful for recovery, but maybe (like Pac-Man's side special) causes Shovel Knight to momentarily become helpless when used in the air.
When used when someone is right next to you, Shovel Knight whips out the Knuckle Fist and deals a blow the the victim, pushing both Shovel Knight and the opponent in whatever direction Shovel Knight was facing (However, this should only be able to be done in something like, 3 times in a row, to avoid exploits).

I was also thinking of having Shovel Knight's recovery be a more literal combination of the Fishing Rod and the Throwing Anchor, with Shovel Knight tossing the Anchor, then grabbing onto it with the fishing rod and following it's trajectory, but then I realized that it was too similar to Ike's Aether.

Also, Shovel Knight's down air should totes be to swipe his shovel below him.
(No, just kidding, that would be idiotic. We all know what the hey his down air should be.)

Here's a potential moveset (may build off of other movesets in this thread).
Jab- Two consecutive shovel digs followed by a slightly more powerful one.
Up tilt- jabs shovel upwards
Side tilt- fire rod
Down tilt- basically shulk's down smash with less range
Neutral special. Charge up your shovel for an attack (Like marth's in melee)
Up special- throw the anchor, then jump to where it lands. Do an attack when you land with your shovel.
Side special- Dust knuckles- can be done twice consecutively, leading into a combo.
Down special- Dig for treasure. The bigger the gem, the more powerful the hit.
Neutral air- spins around hitting with his horns
Front air- Either 1. throws his shovel or 2. a swipe with his shovel
Back air-hits with butt of shovel
Down air- Obviously his down shovel thingy. When you hit you bounce back up. Land 2 consecutive hits and it automatically charges up your neutral special.
Up smash- use the chaos orb like ness' yoyo
Side smash- use the fishing rod for a mid range attack
Down smash- blow the horn!
Up throw- hit with your horns
Front throw- scoop with your shovel
Back throw- kick backwards
Down throw- jump on them with your shovel
Final smash- Shovel knight, Dark knight, and shield knight all come together for a devastating smash!
Vote everyone, its time for SK to STRIKE THE EARTH!

Since I spent some time doing this, here's my own Shovel Knight moveset

  • Jab: Rapid fire fistcuffs with the Dust Knuckles
  • Dash Attack: Shovel Knight rides the Mobile Gear, doing a multihit strike until it stops, at which point there's a strong hit (think of Pac-Man's dash attack).
  • Tilts:
  • Forward Tilt: Shovel Knight's trademark shovel strike
  • Up Tilt: Shovel Knight tries hitting the opponent with the horns on his helmet
  • Down Tilt: It's similar to the forward tilt in animation, but it also sends a Ground Spark to travel across the ground, the spark deals little damage and no knockback, but is pretty fast. The shovel strike itself has no hitbox
  • Smashes:
  • Forward Smash: Shovel Knight's charged slash for high damage and knockback, but with noticeable start-up
  • Up Smash: A throwing anchor that does heavy knockback when it's going up, but only does damage and hitstun when falling. Shovel Knight is vulnerable in the brief moment where the anchor is still going up.
  • Down Smash: Shovel Knight digs deep into the ground, then pulls up a big pile of dirt. Similar to Villager's down-tilt, except more powerful with more range and more cooldown.
  • Aerials:
  • Neutral Aerial: Shovel Knight spins with his shovel like when he does one of the fancy Ornate Plate jumps
  • Forward Aerial: Shovel Knight attempts to bash the opponent with his shovel. Is a meteor smash if hit at the right spot.
  • Back Aerial: A shovel swing backwards, somewhat like Ike's b-air.
  • Up Aerial: A shovel slash up
  • Down Aerial: Basically Link's own down aerial
  • Specials:
    • Neutral Special: Shovel Knight begins charging a strong punch with the Dust Knuckles, once you hit the button again, he dashes forward punching with the Dust Knuckles with the distance depending of how long he charged, the last hit of the flurry is an uppercut that send the opponent right up.
    • Forward Special: Shovel Knight uses the Flare Wand to shoot a fireball at the opponent, can be charged like Megaman's forward Smash.
    • Up Special: Propeller Dagger, basically Shovel Knight's version of Quick Attack/Hydro Pump, only this one can deal knockback and stops if it crashes into someone, however Shovel Knight can use it again immediatelly after crashing into somebody.
    • Down Special: Shovel Knight throws the Alchemy Coin on the ground and it travels alongside it until it falls offstage. Opponents hit by it are going to trip and it goes slowly, giving Shovel Knight an opportunity to strike. If the opponent hits the coin, it'll go back to Shovel Knight and make him trip if he's hit by it, of course he could just hit it back again.
  • Final Smash: Shovel Knight blows the War Horn three times, sending powerful soundwaves that can't be shielded and must be spot-dodged, pretty much exactly like Tabuu's Off-Waves, but with less range and power.
  • Throws:
    • Pummel: Shovel Knight hits the opponent with the handle of his shovel
    • Forward Throw: He smacks the opponent away with his shovel
    • Back Throw: He just flings the opponent away
    • Up Throw: Shovel Knight pretty much hits the opponet with a shovel uppercut
    • Down Throw: Buries the opponent in place, allowing follow-ups. To compensate for this I figure Shovel Knight would have a rather laggy grab, maybe like Villager's?
  • Taunts:
  • Up Taunt: Shovel Knight raises his shovel up in victory
  • Side Taunt: Shovel Knight uses the Phase Locket
  • Down Taunt: Shovel Knight digs a pile of treasure, the treasure can hit the opponent for 1% damage and hitstun
  • Victory Celebrations:
    • Shovel Knight falls asleep by a campfire
    • Shovel Knight downs an ichor proudly
    • Shovel Knight digs through a treasure chest, scattering treasure everywhere before pulling a large pink gem out.
  • Other:
  • Double Jump: One of the fancy jumps done with the Ornate Plate
  • Spotdodge/Airdodge/Roll Dodge: A quick use of the Phase Locket that lasts as long as the invencibility frames, so once Shovel Knight returns to his original coloration it would be when he's vulnerable again.
  • Height: About the same as Mario
  • Weight: The same as Megaman

Here's my working moveset for Shovel Knight. I definitely plan on embellishing the flavor later and tweaking a couple moves if need be.

Also, I think it's most appropriate to represent all his Relics as specials, with a Mega Man/Palutena vibe going for customs.

STANDARDS

Jab: Does is basic shovel scoop attack. Can deflect projectiles.
-> Does a two-handed swing of his shovel. Identical to his Charge Handle attack. Holding the attack button allows Shovel Knight hold the attack, allowing him to move in a wading walk, which he can release his swing at any time. Can only be performed within a small window of frames before the shovel scoop ends.
Dash Attack: Does a mighty forward swing of his shovel.
Get-Up Attack: Quickly swings his shovel against the ground in both directions before getting up.
Ledge Attack: Does a one-handed thrust of his shovel.

SMASHES

Up Smash: His helmet enlarges as he butts his head up. Relatively quick and lacks utility, but covers a modest space and has good vertical knockback.
Forward Smash: Digs his shovel into the ground before him. Will bury opponents on contact. Moderately slow, but powerful. Great for follow-ups.
Down Smash: Quickly digs his shovel before, then behind him, burying opponents on contact. Identical to Villager's Down Smash. Great for follow-ups.

TILTS

Up Tilt: Triumphantly thrusts his shovel skyward.
Forward Tilt: Lightly swings his shovel aside.
Down Tilt: Pokes with the spade of his shovel.

AERIALS

Neutral Air: Rapidly spins around, swinging his shovel forth, then back as he turns. Slightly disjoints downward diagonially on both hits.
Up Air: Does a mighty upward thrust of his shovel. Body posture contours similar to Villager's turnip aerials.
Forward Air: Scoops his shovel forward. Slightly disjointed diagonally upwards.
Down Air: Dives down with his shovel outstretched below him. Identical to his trademark pogo shovel attack. Can bounce off opponents and other objects, decreasing momentum each consecutive hit.

GRABS

Grab/Pivot Grab - Dust Knuckles: His Dust Knuckles appear over his hands as he lunged with a two-handed grab.
Pummel - Dust Knuckle: Punches with his free Dust Knuckle. Moderately quick with decent damage.
Up Throw: Sticks his shovel under the opponent and flings them airward. Great vertical knockback.
Forward Throw - Dust Knuckle Dirt Block Punch: The opponent is encased in a block of dirt. Shovel Knight winds back a fist before punching through with his Dust Knuckles. Has decent knockback.
Down Throw - Dirt Block Pogo Dive: The opponent is encased in a block of dirt. Shovel Knight hops over the dirt block and does a pogo dive atop the block, breaking it. Has decent knockback.

SPECIALS

Neutral Special: Dig
Shovel Knight digs his shovel into the ground beneath him, flinging up dirt & other particulates every time the special button is pressed. The attack animation remains the same when used in the air, except nothing is dug up and ends after the initial heave.

The first heave will dig up the most particulates and has the highest chance of spawning rarer, more damaging gems. You can press the special button as many times as you want to fling more particulates at increasingly weaker rates. After around 4-5 heaves, the attack ends, as nothing is dug up on the last heave.

Shiny Beads: 1% damage, Highest
Gold Nuggets:
2% damage, Highly Likely
Dirt Clumps:
5% damage, will burst into Shiny Beads and/or Gold Nuggets on contact. If no contact made after spawn, will rest of the ground to be flung again or grabbed. Likely
Mole:
7% damage, 3%-2% every other hit, will travel along ground. Highly Unlikely
Small Ruby:
5% damage, Likely
Large Ruby: 7% damage, Unlikely
Small Sapphire: 7% damage, Likely
Large Sapphire: 9% damage, Unlikely
Small Emerald: 9% damage, Unlikely
Large Emerald: 10% damage, Unlikely
Large Amethyst: 15% damage, Highly Unlikely

Note: When coming up with a Neutral Special, I always consider how it represents the character when it carries over to Kirby.
  1. Custom: Trench Dig: Slower, but more powerful and only digs rarer treasure, making the first heave the most powerful. However, Shiny Beads & Gold Nuggets won't spawn and the spawn rates for all other treasure remain fixed to the default, making the latter digs a gamble. Based off the Trench Blade upgrade.
  2. Custom: Spark Dig: Quicker, but only uses one heave that spawns two sparks that travel left and right and deal 3% each. Based off the Drop Spark upgrade.
Side Special: Flare Wand
Shovel Knight swaps his shovel for the Flare Wand, unleashing a fireball that travels horizontally at a medium pace. The attack animation is quick enough that it's reliable to repeat this attack more than once. The fireball deals 5%-7% damage.
  1. Custom: Chaos Sphere: Shovel Knight takes out the Chaos Sphere, which travels in an arc that repeats 8 times before disintegrating. Bounces back from horizontal surfaces. Can also harm Shovel Knight. Deals 3%-5% damage.
  2. Custom: Throwing Anchor: Shovel Knight tosses a Throwing Anchor above him, following a parabola. Harder to hit, but more powerful. Deals 7-9% damage.
Up Special: Propeller Dagger
Shovel Knight charges his Propeller Dagger before unleashing a bolting upward thrust. The longer the charge, the higher and more powerful the attack up. Starts up like Diddy Kong's Rocketbarrel Boost, attack multihits similar to Meta Knight's Drill Rush, but can't change direction. After the attack ends, Shovel Knight whips down the dagger for a tiny window of frames, dealing a spike if timed correctly. Very powerful otherwise.
  1. Custom: Mobile Gear: The Mobile Gear generates under Shovel Knight in the manner of Pac-Man's ground Fire Hydrant. Creates a platform that travels along the ground for 5 seconds before bursting. Does a small jump if running off ledge. If done in the air, the platform will stay in place for a second before falling down. Risky recovery, but offers great mobility.
  2. Custom: Fishing Rod: Shovel Knight casts out his Fishing Rod as a tether recovery. The anchor will make a fast drop after throwing the line, which causes great damage and knockback. If no ledge or platform is contacted after the cast, this will send Shovel Knight plummeting helplessly downward.
Down Special: Phase Locket
Shovel Knight holds up the Phase Locket, making him blinking transparent & becoming intangible to all damage for 3 seconds. He can do any other action during this window.
  1. Custom: War Horn: Shovel Knight takes a breath before blowing on his War Horn, creating a shockwave of a windbox that extends 2½ Shovel Knight's size. Anyone caught in the blast will be buffeting, receiving 2%-3% damage per second. The final blow hits at 3% damage and knocks back hard.
  2. Custom: Alchemy Coin: Shovel Knight flips an Alchemy Coin that rotates along the ground. Shovel Knight can use his first jab hit to bounce the coin up. When it hits enemies, it will deal 5% damage and travel in the opposite direction. After 5 hits, the coin will transmute into a random piece of treasure used in Shovel Knight's Dig, fixed spawn rates withstanding.
Final Smash: Deluge of the Troupple King

A massive, radiant sprout germinates from the ground next to Shovel Knight. He shoves his shovel against it, struggling the dig it up for a few seconds before the Troupple King launches out of the ground next to him, unleashing a tidal wave that expands to cover ¾ of the screen. Any characters or objects caught in the tidal wave (including Shovel Knight) will be knocked skyward near the edge of the KO ceiling, dealing 20% damage on contact. Due to the close proximity to the KO ceiling and moderate damage dealt, this can be a reliable KO move from mid-high percents on for most characters. The only exception is that Shovel Knight has a special launch animation that guarantees he won't get KO'd.

Afterwards, all characters and objects caught in the wave fall back to the stage. Some Troupples will descend from the sky after 3 seconds. Getting hit by one will deal 12%-15% damage. Upon ground contact, they will flail back and forth for 2 seconds before dropping below the screen. You can also hit the Troupples back, making them sturdy, hard-hitting projectiles.

This move behaves very similarly to Fatty Whale's diving attacks in his boss fight in Kirby Super Star.

TAUNTS

Up Taunt: Shovel Knight thrusts his shovel lightly up and down for a few seconds. This is a reference to the victory animation after he defeats a boss.
Side Taunt: Shovel Knight rotates his shovel back by the handle, then slowly rotating forth before resting back to his neutral pose.
Down Taunt: Shovel Knight uses his foot to prop his shovel into the ground before putting a pondering thumb against his chin. This pose is used in some of his splash art.

FLAVOR

Entrance: White 8-bit text displays, reading "-FOR SHOVELRY-" before blinking out as Shovel Knight jumps in from off-screen. He then raises his shovel as the level start jingle plays (Ba-du-nu-naaah!)
Series Emblem: The Shovel Sword pointing spade down, only stretched a bit and made more broad-faced.
Kirby Hat + Attack: Shovel Knight's iconic horned helmet. Uses the default Dig special.
Victory Fanfare: The Level Complete jingle (0:00-0:06)
Victory Pose 1: Shovel Knight thrusts his shovel up and down as if he just beat a level.
Victory Pose 2: Shovel Knight downs Ichor from his Chalice with gusto before whipping off his mouth after the slow down when his name appears.
Victory Pose 3: Shovel Knight does a pogo dive down from the top of the screen, embedding his shovel spade in the ground before hauling it out, sending dirt particles out before holding it outstretched towards the screen.
Loss Clap: Claps his hands, swiveling back and forth slightly as he goes.
Crowd Chant: "Sho-vel Knight! Sho-vel Knight!"
Boxing Ring Alias: The Cerulean-Clad Burrower
Fighter Intro Tagline: "Shovel Knight Digs In!"
Palutena's Guidence:

Pit: "There's this stubby knight carrying a shovel. Wow, that's quite an odd choice of weapon."
Palutena: "That's Shovel Knight."
Viridi: "Blast him! Flinging the Overworld's soil around like it's trash! He better not touch any flora or I'll-"

Palutena: "You see, Shovel Knight's a new kid on the block. It's astounding how he was able to defy his small odds and join the battle."
Pit: "I heard the people were really rooting for him."
Palutena: "And they certainly choose a formidable contender. That Shovel Sword is no gardening tool. It's quite nimble and you could really take a beating with how much damage it does. Also, Shovel Knight has an arsenal of Relics at his disposal. Be careful when you're facing him, because you can never be too sure what he's got in his satchel."
Pit: "Got it! That squire's digging his own grave if he thinks he can overcome me!"
Palutena: "Sure, Pit. Good luck recovering his body when you're suppose to fling him off the stage."

EDIT (4/18/15): Added Flavor and based all his grabs around the Dust Knuckles, the only Relic I forgot in his specials.

I think a good up special would be like rush coil for mega man where shovel knight bounces off of shield knight to gain some air.

Cool thing about Shovel Knight is the series already has an arranged soundtrack so all they'd need to do is find a way to loop them.

Shovel Knight is my number 1 most wanted newcomer.

It would be amazing to see him in the game. If any indie game character deserves it its him.

Seems the Shovel Hype has died down a bit. I wonder why. Though I find it funny that Shantae and Shovel Knight happen to share their gimmicks with the remaining members fo the DK crew, Dixie (hair whip) and Cranky (respect the pogo)

The hype is still strong with me, I was actually thinking about how cool if the trailer for his release would be if they used your earlier posted song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSi3uYaRqI4) up to 0:20 as they hint at him coming to smash and then when the reveal text comes in and he lands in either a really cool new remix or at least use this as it starts showing him off.

Id be so hyped, probably the most hyped I ever been for a video game.
FOR SHOVELRY!

Do any of you think that the chances of any of the indie contenders are hampered by regional popularity? Considering the Fighter Ballot is coordinated internationally, any characters that share popularity between continents would have a better chance of winning (looking at you, K. Rool.)

Last time, I checked, Shovel Knight is huge in the West and I heard nothing come from Japan about him. That shouldn't be the case at all. :scared:

Let's be honest: Shovel Knight will get 0.00 support from Japan. I mean, Shovel Knight hasn't even come out in japan yet! So we're going to have to rely on America to stop voting for Goku and Shrek and vote for Shovelry!

Oyeah,http://legendsoflocalization.com/what-does-japan-think-of-little-mac-in-smash-bros/

According to this, no one knew :4littlemac:, and :4lucina: was highly requested over there and not so much here. They both got included.

After Mewtwo + 7 there are 5 additional “Mario”s listed. This means, that there are 5 additional unused characters in the fighter table in the latest update. Right now, we know for sure that Lucas is coming. After Lucas, it is heavily suggested that Roy (Fire Emblem) and Ryu (Street Fighter) will be incoming as DLC. Therefore, we have two additional slots for DLC. Whether the two slots will be used for the ballot results, or for pre-ballot result DLC is unknown. Stay tuned for additional information.

Shovel Knight fans, I've got some recent news that the Azure Knight's game is getting a Japanese release very soon. Try not to get too excited though since it only gives the guy a decent boost with his chances.
Oh neat, this might just be me looking for the best situation but maybe they wanna release the game in japan before they announce Shovel Knight. So when japanese smashers see the trailer they will be like "Oh his game came out recently maybe I should try it out."

But thats just me hoping they already decided on Shovel Knight. I'm gonna keep supporting him though, He's the underdog I wanna see get in.

I Just played shovel knight this weekend, and damn it charmed me, add me to the supporters : D. I don't think that shovel knight have a chance of winning the ballot or getting considered in the 2 "free slots" for now. but it all boils to if Nintendo wants to do more DLC beyond that. i can totally see him becoming a heavy contender in 2016, specially if the game keeps growing with those free dlcs and it upcoming 4 player mode. (I'm really rooting for plague knight, wonder who will be the other 2 playable bosses :o)

Glad to see that this expanded support is starting to trickle down with Plague of Shadows. I bet Yacht Club will stretch content throughout the year into the next.

For representing each progression of the world map and make the most sense in providing unique platforming mechanics, Specter Knight and Tinker Knight make the most sense for me. Mole Knight remains a favorite of mine though.
