Well it's only getting a 4 month retail run, so much for "we'll put more effort into this one".

There was a problem fetching the tweet

I managed to get a pre-order but with how Nintendo is with Irish retailers, I'm not sure that's much of a guarantee of anything.
Yup, downloading the ROM version is now looking likely.

Unless it gets added to Virtual Console (it better).

Every time I see discussion on Switch shortages, it's stated that it boils down to NAND chips.

https://nintendotimes.com/2017/05/30/is-it-1988-chip-shortage-could-hamstring-switch-production/

Problemmo: That's what the iPhone uses.

*EDIT* Here's a list of what was found in teardowns of the Mini that shows it uses NAND

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/11/nes-mini-teardowns-have-begun-chips-identified/
Dug deeper.

Specific issue regarding the NAND chip shortage is that Ninty and Apple are both trying to grab chips from the same source - Toshiba, which is also the primary source for reports on the shortage (you can hear more about that if you happen to have a Wall Street Journal membership, but as I don't I'm getting secondhand reports citing that source).

Chip inside the Switch is a THGBMHG8C2LBAIL 32 GB eMMC NAND Flash IC, chip inside the iPhone 7 Plus is a THGBX6T0T8LLFXF 128 GB NAND Flash. Toshiba makes both. Thank iFixIt for the teardowns with the details.

That all stated, there's a different brand inside the NES Classic - Polygon did a teardown revealing it as a Spansion 512MB SLC NAND flash, from Cypress Semiconductor (who bought Spansion in '03).

It's worth noting that Cypress is valued somewhere around 1/6 of Toshiba, so if Tosh is feeling the squeeze, Cypress won't be much better off. And Toshiba is probably the logical choice for the SNES Classic, as Ninty's got an ongoing partnership with them already vis a vis the Switch.

...doesn't inspire hope, exactly, so I honestly don't even know what I'm getting at.

I like taking electronics apart, come at me thread.

Switch game collections are better for the average Nintendo fan, but the mini consoles are better for Nintendo themselves.
Yep.

Even putting aside the fact that most of us who criticized this reveal around here are salivating, putting aside the previously unreleased game bundled in - this is, by comparison to the Switch, a dirt-cheap way to scratch a nostalgia itch for people who otherwise wouldn't invest in a Switch for one reason or another.

It'll literally print money for however long they keep it on shelves -

- so literally from September 29th to September 30th.

Ah well.

Yar har fiddle-dee-dee, ************.

Tbh I can see Nintendo launching a standalone digital version of Star Fox 2 for the Switch in a year or 2.
Crossing fingers.

I don't usually deal in Virtual Console stuff but I will totally grab that.

Doubly so if my odds of getting the Mini Sness turn out to be what I think they'll be.

Oh boy.

4 month retail run means I'm probably gonna have to get it at a pawn shop again.

I was more just thinking about the fact that Nintendo knows they're in a position where the shortage for these is inevitable due to their situation with their supplier, and they also know from experience that their lesser stocked products tend to generate hype for their scarcity.

So they can either release yet another scarce but hyped product containing a previously unreleased game that will make them a quick surge of money, or they can release a game collection digitally on the Switch that probably won't make a lot of money even over a long period of time.

For the average consumer, it isn't the simple idea of playing old games that's appealing, it's being able to play them in a way that closely imitates the system they were originally released on.

Nintendo isn't creating artificial scarcity, but they're certainly taking advantage of a scarcity they know is inevitable should they choose to make this kind of product in their current situation.

Sure.

Didn't originally take rarity into account per se; typed that out blindly hoping that maybe we'd catch a break this time.

But then "four month" run.

They know what they're dealing with.

I highly doubt Nintendo wants to lose money from running these boxes long term. Even the SNES Mini is like half the cost of what they'd charge for these games on the Eshop, and people are practically chomping at the bit for Virtual Console. Combined with every SNES Mini in existence having at least a chance of taking a Switch out of existence, and it's not a particularly ideal investment for them to actually commit fully. Their present approach is pretty darn cold and it's going to catch a ton of negative PR, but considering the other options are to simply not make a highly requested product at all or to potentially undercut the Switch it's about as pragmatic as they can manage.

I can't see them finishing Star Fox 2 and then restricting it to a limited run box, however. Whenever Virtual Console or the equivalent finally does go up, it will likely go up at some point as well. Assuming it isn't saved as a classic game release included as part of Nintendo's online subscription, as it DOES have a 2-player mode. . .

Actually that last idea would be a very interesting way to approach it. HUH. I wonder if they'll actually do that. . .

Oh yeah, Fate/Grand Order is out in English now. I know @Erureido and @Shishœ are probably interested in it.
Mfw my phone isn't compatible
How do people know I like Fate, I talke about it, like, once every month, maybe. Why do people remember small things about me? Damnit I'm not important enough for this, I'm the guy who ******* about EO 25/8 and ****posts 99% of the time.
Unless I did a bunch of Saber "appreciation" posts when I was sleep deprived and that left people traumatized.

If I'm legendary, y'all need some better legends.

That said, flattery, getting one everywhere, etc.

You've probably noticed that panel's full source, and it looks a bit slim as an avi when converted to a 150 x 210.

I've clipped it to a proper ratio that should resize properly (274 x 384) but I have mixed feelings on how much it cuts out. The result feels like it loses a lot of contrast without the tree shadow. Could just be me.

Anyway here's the further-cropped version; discretion's yours which to use, if either.

Awesome, thank you very much!
Yay for Star Fox 2! I may or may not have already played some version of it somehow, but I'm thrilled for the art and the potential for it to bring renewed attention to the series.

I will say though that a SNES Classic without Chrono Trigger just feels... incomplete... :/
Would you say you feel triggered?

Anyway this was kind of surprising news, mostly due to Star Fox, but its pretty cool. Might try to pick it up.

Apparently one reason why Chrono Trigger may have missed the boat is due to emulation issues (the game is notoriously buggy). But then again, so is Secret of Mana.

So I was messing around with Awakening for a bit, and looked at the Spotpass units for the first time in a long while. It's really surreal seeing the Gaiden units after playing Shadows of Valentia.

...And it also makes the ones they picked seem strange in hindsight. For reference, each past game got ten units, most of which were comparatively important characters. Gaiden got the following:

Alm, Celica, Clive, Clair, Luthier, Mycen, Boey, Valbar, Nomah, and Deen.

Why the hell did they put Deen, of all characters, in over someone like Saber? Especially considering Deen is unrecruitable if you go for Sonya. Alm and Celica are obvious, and Clive, Clair, Boey, and Valbar make sense (the latter since he was inexplicably on the cover of Gaiden), but I feel like Luthier, Mycen, Nomah, and Deen kind of jumped the line a bit. Then again, this is going by Echoes, and Gaiden had much less development for the more minor characters, so yeah. I just think it's neat is all. :p

I just realized I can finally play the SNES version of Yoshi's Island.

Why the **** has Nintendo never released that version on the Virtual Console?

Eh.

I haven't seen the need yet. Wouldn't worry about it unless you need exactly one more controller, want the Splatoon edition for its own sake, or truly despise the doggo grip.

Might be worth revisiting around Smash time.

Its a pretty damn good controller, easily the best that's compatible for the Switch...

With that said I'd only recommend getting it if you have the money to spare, or if you're in desperate need of a second/third controller for multiplayer, or if you absolutely want the + pad for games and better range of motion for your right thumb on the second joy-stick...
Otherwise the Puppy pad is good enough for the time being...

If you've got big yaoi hands like me, then yeah.

The Joy-cons were just too small when I tried them.

Otherwise you don't need it too much, only if you need a second controller for more traditional games since it's cheaper than a second pair of Joy-con IIRC.

I've always been a firm believer that anyone who believes vaccines cause autism shouldn't be allowed to have kids. Hell, in Italy (I think it's Italy), if you force a child to eat a vegan diet, child services can take your kids away
What's wrong with a Vegan Diet?

ALlike that I know about Fate is that there's WAY too much porn of it.

Maybe that's why people remember.
