Hey guys! You know me! I main-streamed APEX 2012 and APEX 2013! I even at one time tried to buy Smashboards from MLG (AZ beat me too it though, haha). Anyways, with the Rokunaya Bi-Weeklies ending at The Break, we've been looking for an event to replace it; and we've decided to try our hand at running a Smash Bros event!

For now, we've decided to try it out Bi-Weekly with just Melee. But if it works out, we may consider expanding it to a weekly event, alternating Melee and Brawl. The Break is an arcade, so space is limited and we only have enough room for 4 stations. However, we have lots of arcade games to play, and a grill in the venue where you can eat. We've also been running tournaments for almost 20 years now, and never charged a venue fee!

Naturally, since this is our first Smash Bros event, we don't have any GameCubes! If people would be kind enough to bring with them, and of course, copies of the game; we would be very appreciative. I would offer a venue fee discount to anyone who can bring equipment, but as I said before, we don't charge one!

LOCATION: http://www.thebreak.net/

8 on the Break
340 North Avenue
Dunellen, NJ 08812

We are literally right in front of the Dunellen Train Station.
Train schedule: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/r0060.pdf

TIME: 6:00 PM EST (every other Friday)
  • 7:00 PM - Super Smash Bros. Melee ($10 entry)
Signup and casuals for events start as early as 6:00 PM EST. Make it on time! This is our first time running a Smash event, so we want to make sure its started on time and ends before Midnight so people who need can hit the train and get home.

RULES:
  • All games will follow the national APEX ruleset.
  • BYOC - BRING YOUR OWN CONTROLLERS.
  • Absolutely do not vandalize any of our equipment.
  • We reserve the right to search anyone suspicious.
VENUE: http://www.thebreak.net/

8 on the Break is a family fun arcade location. Absolutely no alcohol will be permitted on the premises. If you are caught drinking, or drunk, you will be escorted out, without refund. As well, no smoking is permitted within the arcade. Be clean and courteous; clean up after yourself. The venue is provided to us in good faith of our attendees.

STREAM: http://8wayrun.com/stream/

Stream is provided by Jaxel of 8WAYRUN.com. While the streams for the tournament take place in the evening, Jaxel tends to run video game streams before the event. Sponsorship opportunities on the stream available at request. Jaxel also offers his streaming services to tournament organizers; contact him if you are interested!

Finally! They host so many other tournaments bi-weekly, I was wondering when someone would start hosting Melee. Awesome, I go here bi-weekly anyway, perfect timing :D

Should be interesting. A decent stream at least.

So people have been telling me that the Smash community is more willing to "accept" HD monitors these days... Is this true?

I would much rather use EVO monitors than CRTs if they are an option. People would have to bring Wii-Us instead of Gamecubes though.

They are not quite an option just yet because we don't have a valid input method. The Wii U has no controller port, so the only way to use input is to use a classic controller or a gamecube to wii mote adapter. Unfortunately there is delay from the adapter. Crediar is currently working on a wired adapter solution but it might be a while.

What about using Wiis with the Neoya Wii2HDMI adapter (an adapter I had top players test, and claim had no lag... though it does stretch the aspect ratio in Melee).

I'm sure they would be fine, I'm actually going to get one myself to test, but we can't play with a stretched aspect ration because it's skew's our perception of the distance to the ledge when trying to recover. The good thing about the devolution program is that you can change the actual aspect ratio to true 16:9 on wii u. But if the regular wii's have devolution on them, which I can install, that may be an option.

I don't know what any of that is... but at the break we have 4 CRTs, and I will bring 2 LCDs... so whatever works, will work.

Chain Ace, are you driving to this?

I want to go, because its not hard for me to get here from school but going back home is a huge pain as I found out.

I need someone to help me to a Northeast Corridor train route =/

There is a train station across the street from the venue... but its not on the NE Corridor.

Worst case scenario, I live 5 minutes from Metropark, which is on the NE Corridor... I can drop you off if needed.

Jaxel have your 4:3 smash layout ready just in case, but if we use the evo monitor and wii that I bring, you can use your marvel overlay since the melee will be 16:9

Its all the same either way... I can just add pillar-bars to the 16:9 display. APEX is the only event where I have different 4:3 grids.

I'm probably only going to be streaming at 30fps (instead of my usual 60fps). My stream PC is dying, running at 95 degrees celcius... so i need to slow things down till the new parts come in next week.

Hay Im from NYC and Me and a friend of mine are trying to attend. We would like to know whether or not we are able to play if we go? Also are there going to be friendly matches? lastly, about how many people are going to show up?

Do you need people to bring setups?
We only have HD TVs... no SD TVs, and no Gamecubes... so if you can bring setups, that would be great.

Damn. It's okay, Jason will help me with the brackets. I just hope we have enough setups and consoles without you.

Next event is on November 8! Hope to see more of you there!
Good stuff.

results thread

yo make sure the break starts to create facebook event each tuesday for the break weekly and fridays for smash weeklies for the next upcoming events for the following week(s) so people can join and share with their friends. I can only spread the word so much without there being event pages.

I am sad I made plans for the 8th so I will not be there for the next one.

I had fun though thanks for hosting Jaxel.

The whiffle btw was SO GOOD SLKFJASLKJFLAKDJF

GGs to everyone, Mafia I hope you keep it up man. You're so close to a break through imo, you had really solid play but started to play worse as our set went on. You've really improved since the last time we played though, it was good seeing you.
