did anyone watch the episode of Prince of Tennis where Ryoma and Momo(?) have to play doubles and suck?

That is until they decide to just play in their own area and ignore their partner.

I wonder if there is a doubles pair like that out there, that'd be hilarious.

Great guide it helped me a ton. Also, the long replies made me get some ideas for a new plan.

Is the tier list made for 1v1's or can they be used for 2v2's also?

Um about the prince of tennis thing and playing by yourself, thats what me and my team mate attempt to do. We are both good in singles and can handle close play without many mistakes, it can work as long as u dont completely ignore your partner, and remember to help at the right times.

Peace

The reason it worked for those two in the show is because they were both much better singles players than their opponents.

Singles power can definitely carry you over teamwork if your opponents can't overcome your skill in splitting them up. If they are competent or nearly as competent in the 1v1 arena, then their teamwork will be the deciding factor.

Edit: To respond to Drift, the tier list is based pretty much entirely in 1v1. Some characters become much more viable in teams. Ganon is a lot more potent, Peach is an undisputed top tier teammate, Jiggs gains a couple of spots. One character who is much better in teams, although not to a very useful extent, is Kirby. Any character with good defensive strategies and survivability makes a great teammate; this is why you see Falco performing much less effectively in teams than in singles. His aggressive, high risk high reward style does not shine in the 2v2 arena nearly as much in 1v1s. He's still pretty effective because he's such a good character, but I'd argue that he drops a few places on the list--if only because quick KOs can drastically change the flow of a 2v2 and he's extra susceptible with two opponents on the field.

As much as I don't mind teaming, it's hard for me to really team with anyone because I feel that I'm not good enough to really team with someone (This is usually the reason). I hate feeling like I'm holding them back =/

Anyway to overcome this, King?

This is an excellent post, I always laugh at people that tell me that team games are for people that have no skill. I know the intricacies of team play because I'm a Halo gamer (word to your momma) so at some point, oddly enough before reading this thread, I said to myself "hey, I should probably play off my teammate a bit more and actually think about what I'm doing." And as anyone that knows me in person knows, when I start thinking, I rule for that whole time frame (*30 seconds*cough*).

Bottom line...excellent concept, exceptional post. I don't think I could add anything to that even if I tried, other than talking during the game helps an assload, even though the other team can hear you....if you do it right, knowing won't mean handling. I can't remember if you even mentioned verbal communication because I read this topic this morning :)

I love talking out loud in teams. Cuz im like "Grab that motha ****er, and then they are like oh **** and run away from my partner only to get grabbed by me XD. Once i entered this n00b tourney that was doubles. Somehow (like our first time teaming while they practiced teams, and cuz it was so n00bish a tourney we screwed around a lot aka killing myself twice using up-b with fox as an attack etc n00b stuff) we were about to lose, but if we took the G&W out we might win cuz then they couldnt steal lives. So there are like 20 people watching and i Yell **** THAT G&W, KILL THAT THING NOW!!!!!!!!!!! Every1 thought it was funny, only to find 2 seconds later that the g&W had gone from 0-70 and u-aired by me. Because friendly fire wasnt on, fox and a teamate can combo the **** out of anything. It was ****ing hilarious. Lol sliq, when u rest some1 they explode XD

Btw BDawgPHD's link in his sig is the best thread u will EVER read... READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im teaming with a friend at a tournment next saturday, (it's our first time teaming at a tournament) he plays sheik and I play jiggs I know thats a pretty good team. He is the on stage agresser, while I usally hold stock, edge gaurd and just bail my team mate out of trouble if he needs it. We also do grab rests when we can.

Is there greater strategies then that to a sheik/jiggs team?

Really nice thread, I got a lot from it.

I seem to remember that a year or so ago husband or wife (or maybe someone else, but I thought it was one of the 'weds, probably wife) made a similar thread that was also a pretty good read, but I can't find the thread for the life of me. Anyone else remember that and maybe could post up a link to it?

I won't disagree with Wobbles' belief that Falco's is less effective in teams than singles, but I don't think its that bad. Of course his partner's character will make a difference, the main component of his effectiveness is that you can't play a typical combotastic floor control game that a singles Falco commonly does. Falco works in teams.

King, for a class of mine I'm attempting a complete knowledge base for what it takes to go from noob to competitive ready (not that it will make someone godlike, but knowledge is important).

the thread is here:

http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=129456

is it okay if I link/paraphrase from this thread? Whichever you prefer, and all credit would go to you of course.

This thread is amazing. I said this before, but it pretty much highlights what I always thought about teams, only in much greater detail and in ways that noobies can understand easily. Lol Halo :)
