that leads to banana/peanut spam, so just shield that until he gets bored enough to come near?

Actually charging smashes is a very good way of dealing with spotdodgers

Approaching is a myth.
Get in a zone where he's incomfortable and use safe moves (like SH aerials), then when he commits punish with dash attack.

Jab 1 to Jab 2 to Grab to D-throw to U-air to N-air to RAR'd B-Air to Offstage Reversed Falcon Punch.

The Labernash Combo> smash. Punish like a man, not like a boss.

and approaching (if needed) from the air is a bad thing right?
because i've got some pretty embarrassing gameplay on youtube of me trying to land on stage with a knee on ICs... like 3 times in a row...

^^^ This. Unless he's offstage, then get ballsy.

Grab the ledge and U-Air if you're trying to get back on.

You could approach with B-Air or N-Air. But, run, jab>grab is better.

Nair seems good. If you overshoot, just cancel your turnaround animation with jab.

Falling for constant spot dodges isn't a CF approach problem. The problem is your overall gameplay. You would succumb to that tactic even with MK. You need to throw in A LOT more feints. You obviously never jab which is one of Falcon's best moves. A decent way to approach is a well spaced fast fall Uair to Jab/Grab (Mix it up to avoid shield grabs).

But like it has already been said. CF is also just a terrible character. The best option would be "Don't approach", but that is almost impossible with a character with 0 ranged attacks.
