I voted Shulk because he needs my support over Ridley, even though they are my number one and two most wanted characters. Oddly enough, even though Ridley is my number one, I feel like I would be more upset if Ridley made it over Shulk instead of the other way around.
.... ... ...the joke is that Shulk sees a vision, but you can't go up to him and tell him to shield everyone because he just used Monado Enchant. And since Shulk's A.I. spams Monado Enchant a lot, this happens a lot more often than it should.

Well, someone mentioned this on that poll, but Shulk would bring more attention to a blossoming franchise, one that has only had one game so far but that one game was critically acclaimed, and would be beneficial to Nintendo both financially and having another RPG series under their belt. Ridley would just bring Ridley.
Not too mention the Stage, Music, and Assist Trophies.
