Smash may not need customs to thrive, but that doesn't take away that it still benefits greatly from their presence, at least in my opinion.
I need customs because I main MegaMan and he's terrible without them. Skull barrier is a godsend and the explosive bubble is much better than the default side B. His tornado recovery opens up so many offensive options; it's the combo starter everyone needs. Of course you never want to replace metal blade though.

Yeah, some customs should probably be banned, but the fact that they can greatly improve otherwise unviable characters just makes them too good to ignore.

I'm fairly certain that the legal gray area surrounding is Project M is the only reason for its absence in many mainstream tourneys and streams. I'm sure there's also some wish wash caused by the fact that it's still in development and therefore the meta will continue to be disrupted until a final release is made available. But even that doesn't stop most people from playing it. PM is great and people love it. I consider PM as a true Smash iteration. Competitive Smash popularized the franchise and kept it alive without any help from Nintendo. It was only a matter of time before the community created and adopted their very own flavor of Smashbros.
It's a MOD. It's never gonna be a main event at EVO. Why do people not get this?
20XXTE is also a mod but I doubt that's going to make it any less popular in tournaments. Now PM and 20XX are fundamentally different, but at the core they're still mods. There's really nothing wrong with being a mod.

I think it's great that Smash collectively will have more than 3000 people by the time EVO begins. This is really huge for us as a community as we are larger than Street Fighter! That's insane to think. And yet when you get down to it, there will still be a majority of the FGC community and its people that will say that "Smash is not a fighter" or anything along the lines to those words. It's really frustrating to see that people will deny facts and proof just to trash something they don't want to believe.
