Ladies and nerds, I (the living legend, Xyro77) have returned to you with great sadness. I have brought with me my annual assessment of the yearly bore fest known as Apix hosted by Alex Trebek of Uganda. This year, we saw the rise of a REAL game (melee) as well as the rise of a FAKE game for little babies that cant handle brawl or melee. We call that game P(oisoned) M(elee). I expected Melee to do well (Thanks Evo) and i also expected the "mommy please give me my bottle of milk and a new diaper while i mod a game im not good at so that i can finally be good at it (but i still suck anyway teehee)" unskilled players to show in full force....and they did. However, this year, my Brawl night terrors had finally come true. The sight no human should bare witness did indeed happen. The end of Bawl has truly come.

But first, let me tell you a little story that lead up to the disaster that was Apux.

The day before Apox, i was with my GF. It was a dark, cold and stormy but we were sitting naked at a Mexico food place eating/drinking strawberry Margaritas. We were talking about my love for Interracial ****** Amputee Porn (iMap for short) when all of the sudden my iphone (glorious Apple master race) alarm went off. I reached for my phone to see what alarm could possibly be going off so early in the day. It was the "Apex has started. EMPTY YOUR CARE CUP"" alarm. So having seen the alrm, i emptied my care cup promptly. The next 3 days of Apix were ignored to the fullest of my ability. In fact, not thinking of Apux made me lose weight, gain a 6 pack, added a few inches to my already ridiculously long Zair and made my receding hair line......un-recede. I kept it off my mind and i swear i thought i was an improved man (in all ways). I was finally happy.

However........

The day after Apex, i get on SmashBoards. I get on to see how things were going in the Houston thread or maybe the WiiFitGirl boards (my ssb4 main btw). I was willing to look at anything but Apex info. But something in my head called out to me. It told me.....things. Things like "What if a Samus won Brawl at Apex?" Things like "What if a bunch of kick @$$ mid tiers placed well?" What if, NickRiddle finally posted "Xyro, when can i touch your peg leg?" When thoughts like that go through your head you cant help but go see if those thoughts are actually true. So i raced to the Apex results thread to see if Samus (or any REAL character) had won Brawl.

Let me be the first one to start this page off with a big post and a bang.

My Apex experience was fantastic in every way... aside from playing smash.

There was cheap food provided, there was good food within delivery range, and I got to see some of the best people I know that I only get to see once a year or less. Outside of the main ballroom there was tons of space to move around and the activity rooms were fantastic. The artist alley was sweet as always, I got to play smash Flash for the first time which is actually a really fun and interesting game (Fox is stupid though, continuing to allow him to jump cancel out of a one frame shine among the other melee fox crap he does is stupid and is the biggest thing stopping me from seriously picking that game up is him.) And my crew took full advantage of the streetpass room and streetpassed the hell out of the event. The 24 hours bring your own set up freeplay room was maybe the best idea anybody came up with for this event. The OCRemix/CTRL gaming booths were awesome too.

However, as much was great about the event, there was almost as much that went wrong with my personal experience as went right.

Skullgirls.

When I played Brawl singles, I ended up getting third in my pool, losing to MJG twice. Which was fine, good games to that guy. I would rather have not gotten double elim'd by the same guy, but meh, ish happens.
One actual problem is that there wasn't to my knowledge, any designated pool leader for my pool to run things. Being a TO back home, I stepped up and started taking charge of things. making sure people were playing their matches and the results were recorded accurately. But since I wasnt actually staff or anything like that, I didn't really have any true authority. We also happened to have Lux recording most of the matches in my pool too. So there were a couple of times where Red Halberd and MJG had matches on deck, and instead of playing them on the open tv, they decided to wait for the recording set up because they really wanted to play there. Now, i DEFINITELY cant get mad at them for wanting to be recorded. And individually, those two guys holding up 2 matches isnt a big deal. But when that kind of thing is extrapolated to a 400 man tournament and if all 32 pools have one or 2 guys holding up matches for 5 to ten minutes, that results in many hours of time lost and the tournament running behind in the long run.

Once again, Im not saying this is MJ's or Halzy's fault. but there needs to be a more concrete understanding of who is the leader and who is in charge of pools. because an event like this needs to be made as efficient as possible. and that involves designating people for everything to facilitate the tournament smoothly. That would have also helped a ton with the whole fire marshal situation, since nobody was listening to the guy on the loud speaker when he was telling everybody to leave, having individual pool leaders help with that would have been better i think.

Thats a really minor issue, but this post is gonna be big so I figure I should hit everything.

Next was Saturday. Saturday screwed me over pretty hard.
The Brawl and Melee doubles bracket were both slated to start at roughly 10:30. For Melee, my partner arrived a bit late, around 11. I got to the TO desk to try and find out where I was supposed to be and what my bracket was (since the Apex website was essentially Dead On Arrival as soon as the pools were released) at that point i was informed that me and my partner had been DQ'd from winners. Upon further investigation, we learned that we had been DQ'd from the first round, despite the fact that other first round matches hadn't been played yet. As a TO, thats something I dont really agree with. Usually in the first round of a tournament if somebody isn't there yet, the least you can do is play any of the rest of that round with whoever is there and then come back to those matches, it doesnt hold up the tournament at all and gives those few who are behind a couple extra minutes to get to play those matches. if you come back to those matches the second time and they still arent there, then yea, a DQ is completely justified. but i kinda feel like I got jipped since the apex site was down so I didnt know of anyway to find out what pool i was in or where I was in bracket to know when my matches were to start until I got there saturday morning. then when I get there, all I get is a 'we called you and you werent here so we DQd you' while they call the other 5 matches of the same round. Like, at the point where we were ready, it would have been easy to find our opponents and play after the fact. and it wouldnt have changed anything since neither of the following round matches for either team was even close to being played.

That was lame but it could go either way its w/e mostly.

the thing that really burned me up, was that I personally spent money I dont have much off to enter as many tournaments as i could to support the event. But later on sunday, I got put into a situation where I had to play Doubles for Melee and Brawl and Blazblue at the same time. Me and my Brawl partner played a match with SuperGirlKels and MikeKirby, during that match, I got called to Blazblue, before I started, I ran to the other side of the room to inform the BB people of my situation, and they were super laid back and cool about it. I came back, finished my brawl match and went over to play BB

As soon as I got started playing BB, I started getting texts from both my brawl and melee partners telling me that I had matches in both of those games. I lost my first set and my second set was immediately ready to play. So since I was distraught at the fact that both of my partners were blowing my phone up, I didn't play very well. during my second set is when they started making the annoucements over the loud speaker to prioritise melee over the other games if there was any kind of internal conflict between games. since Melee had the most entrants. So my melee partner came over and watched my BB match so that as soon as i was done getting 0-2d we immediately went to play our melee match.

In the course of finding and playing my melee match, I texted my brawl partner letting him know to tell the TOs I was playing melee. I stood up on my chair and signaled the brawl TO to let him know that I was playing melee. We told the melee TOs to contact the brawl TOs to let them know that we were in the middle of melee matchs (which I was told was supposed to be prioritized) AND find our next match opponents so we wouldnt have to waste time looking for them after the fact. So after finishing a Brawl Doubles match, I ran over and immediately played two (short) blazblue set, followed soon after by 2 melee doubles sets. then ran back to the Brawl TO table. At that point they told me that I got DQ'd from brawl doubles for being gone for 50 minutes, even though it had only been 30 minutes since my match had been called, the only thing I did was go play other tournament matches after I was told to prioritise my melee matches. This is garbage because I know for a FACT that if my name was Jason Zimmerman, I would have been allowed to play all of my tournament matches. I know this because I definitely heard him called to play a brawl match over the speaker while playing melee, and the melee TO told the brawl guys to wait for him over the speaker.

I feel like i gave away my money for no reason.

Like, if I was going to get DQd from a game for simultaneously entering too many tournaments and Not being famous. I wish it would have at least said something on the Apex website about not entering too many tournaments. I wouldnt have minded my tournaments being capped on what i could enter because I would have saved my money instead of giving it away and trying to support the event only to not be allowed to play. Otherwise I would think that this kind of situation would have been the kind of thing that is alloted time for in the schedule. Because it happens in every tournament that has multiple games.

I salvaged what was left of saturday by placing in the top 16 in marvel, beating kbrad along the way. but aside from my tournament experiences, everything else was amazing and incredibly well done.

i wish there had been at least a few friendly set ups in the ballroom on sunday, but eh.

I was surprised how well I did in pools though, Apex kinda made me realize I'm not that bad at this game

We burned 48 copies of melee, and brawl, hacked 80 wiis, and stationed a little under 100 CRTs, in case people aren't aware of just how much work we did. I apologize for the lack of properly burned brawl copies, that was Alex Strife's fault for not listening to me. I'll be sure to have all stations working 100% for apex 2015. We made the mistake of finalizing set ups wednesday instead of a week earlier. That mistake will not be made next year.

Shoutouts to Alex Strife for hosting the tournament. You're probably the hardest working person in this whole community, throwing an event this large is stressful and difficult, but they're always a blast. I hope you stick around with the Apex series for years to come, you're a great TO. Thanks for throwing it all together.


Criticisms:
First off, let me say this was a great event, and it was tons of fun. I don't think it'd be possible not go to Apex and have a blast. That being, said, though, there's always things you can improve and this Apex definitely could improve on a lot. First off, the venue was definitely too small, it seemed smaller than even only one of the Rutger's venue rooms, not to mention the 2nd one it had. Having the venue at the hotel was pretty great where we only had to just wake up and in 5 mins we could be in the room playing so it would be awesome if you found a hotel with a bigger room that would let you have it there.

The evo-style bracket pools I felt were still bad. Obviously we can't have a RR with the amount of entrees at this tournament, that's why I much prefer the bracket pools Apex 2013 had where your losses are reset going into the main bracket and your essentially playing for just seeding. Lower level players still go 0-2 or 1-2 and be out which is unfortunate, but I feel the main advantage to this gives TOs better results for seeding. Often time you'll have players where you're not really sure where to seed them because they've never really competed at a national level against other players from other regions, but do well in their region (see StaticManny and Heru for example). The Apex 2013 bracket pools allows you to see how they perform against people from other regions without punishing them too early (or, if they get the upset, punishing that player who got upsetted). I thought the seeding for pools was good, but definitely could have been better. You should have at least 1 representative from each region helping seed the brackets, this will create a lot less of ppl from same state/region being put in same pool and give insight on some good, but not well known players. These type of pools are actually worse than a "big bracket" since normally in a big bracket if you lose you could be sent to the other side of the bracket to play against someone else, but in these types of bracket pools you often have the 3rd/4th seed losing to the same person twice which just sucks to play against the same person twice in bracket when one of the best things about national tournaments is playing against a variety of players. One of the main arguments I heard against this was that you can play friendlies or MMs on your own time at this tournament, but actually we couldn't due to all of the setup issues at this tournament which brings me to my next point.

I remember I told one of the staff that was doing it that they could just download the hacks to unlock everything and they told me they knew and something along the lines of "we don't have an sd card right now but we're getting one). I thought that'd be fine, but when I come back on the 2nd day and there's still an abundance of wiis that don't have things unlocked...like why can't you in the span of 24 hours get an SD card, download the hacks to do it and just get everything unlocked? Then day 3 barely had any room for friendlies at all, the main room was completely for watching the finals which is fine, although I'd prefer to be able to play people and watch finals at the same time, or at least without walking across the venue to do it, but the other room should have been filled with setups that were used on Days 1-2, there were like at max 3 brawl setups in that room, 1 of them being used for the ganon gauntlet all day. So ya basically, one of the reasons to run evo style bracket pools was to make the tournament go by faster and have people play on their own time, but we couldn't even do that.

I think that's everything I had to say about the tournament, but like I said in the beginning, I thought it was still a great tournament and had an amazing time. Overall, Alex Strife and the Apex staff did a great job and I look forward to next year

This was mostly alex strife's fault. We were behind on disks because he burned the brawl isos at max rather than 4x with verify. Xivc actually went around and used a sd card with an ar max save file to unlock everything friday, and we did the same thing saturday morning. This wouldn't have been a problem if we started hacking wiis earlier than wednesday. I had to burn 84 copies of smash, and hack 80 wiis. Try to understand the time and effort we put in to this.

@TheCrimsonBlur - Always awesome to see you man. I'm sorry your coast choked it up so hard (), but at least they get the best tournaments because of you and the rest of Team OXY. It is really making a huge difference in the entire community, more than I think you know. You've also improved A TON since leaving Mfree/FreeA. Keep it up.
@Juggleguy - Good set in pools. I look forward to playing you again (salt). Like I said for Crimson, I greatly appreciate your work in the community with TOing, stat-tracking, and MioM.

@dudutsai - Great friendlies and MM. Your Puff is definitely legit. I just played better in our MM than I've ever played in any tourney/MM my entire life though... We should definitely rematch next time we see each other.
@xMilkMan - I had a blast teaming/hustling those kids. XD We should team next tourney we're both at if you don't team with Cyrain.
@andrewajt62 - "Not this time." lol I'm so salty about that set (even more salty you wouldn't rematch haha). I played so dumb getting grabbed that many times, but oh well, Melee is like that sometimes. Hopefully, I have learned my lesson.
@Metal Reeper - I have seen DBZ, ***hole. lol GGs
@EmuKiller - Fun set. I always enjoy playing vs. Marth. I know you had your recording setup, so if there's any chance of our set or my other sets getting uploaded, please lmk.
@NamiNami - Our matches were some of my favorites of the whole weekend! I was disappointed we couldn't play more. Hopefully we get to play sometime in the future however unlikely it is. I will be practicing the ditto in preparation for the day so I am able to finnish all of my combos.
@s2j - Thanks for the friendlies at the end of the night during top 8. Now I know to just lie still on the ground if a Falcon tries to fsmash me. lol I'm sure the next national will go better for you. Just keep going DEEEEEEEEP!
