One of the things about Smash I enjoyed was the ability to have 4 computers duke it out and guess who would win. It was great at Smashfests when the pizza arrived. Set up a quick 4 way free for all with level 9s and all take a guess on who would win. Some people ran <a href="http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=20487">forum</a> <a href="http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=23126">based</a> <a href="http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=27071">betting</a> <a href="http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=73971">games</a> from this.

Seems like Sakurai knew about this, as todays update is the new Spectator Mode.

<img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/wi-fi02_071116d-l.jpg" alt="I want a Spectating Spectators mode." />

As known before, matches can be recorded and sent to friends, but you can also choose the option to have game records sent to Nintendo to then be Broadcast in Spectator mode.

Before a match is played on your screen you get shown who the characters are and the stage. No names or anything identifying for the players though, as this could affect who you think might win. Why does this matter? Simple: Sakurai <del datetime="2007-11-16T07:25:49+00:00">stole our</del> had an idea to have a beting game!

<img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/wi-fi02_071116b-l.jpg" alt="500 coins on Peach! What do you mean I'm out of coins? I'll bet my (Game and) Watch!" />

Place the coins on the person you want to win, then watch the match and collect your winnings! Thhe more people, the higher your winnings are! What’s that? You ended up backing the loser? That’s okay, you’ll still get some consolation stickers for your album.

Expect some stickers to be only obtainable from this mode.

<img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/wi-fi02_071116c-l.jpg" alt="Nintendog, toad...can't see the rest." />

<blockquote>The content that is broadcast is the same for everyone spectating (if your connection timing is the same), so it should be fun to have people in different environments watch and cheer the same match.

To be shocked by impressive play, or to bust a gut laughing at some accident will be quite fun! Perhaps you can use it as reference for your own matches.

Hopefully this mode is something that even people who aren?t good at games can enjoy.

Kinda sad it seems to be totally random. Would be awesome if people set up tournaments and you could watch them.

Also it shows some costumes I didn't see in the E for All footage. Sadly it seems Link doesn't get his ninja zora suit from TP but it looks like fox got his star fox adventures costume (the colors at least)

It's a shame that names will be disabled for this mode... because then honest players who wish to show off their skill to other players can't, even though it may be that person who is playing and not some other random person halfway across the world.

The only problem then from that stems from when people decide to joke around and do things like using M2K as a tag; instances like that would pop up here and there and just be confusing (because why not make your own tag to gain your own infamy?)

There may be those players who wish to not have their names displayed through this if it is turned on... but then, I say to those players, why play with a tag anyways?

The only technical difficulty I can think of would be actually sending the tags through the internet... but, I don't think it would be that much of a problem <.<

PERHAPS there will be an addition of another option, to use tags or not, with this mode... that would be so SWEET if there was.

I don't see this getting much use. The matches it sends you are random, so you might end up watching several boring matches before you come across a good one. It's a good idea I guess, but with Nintendo's privacy and safety stuff, I think it's far too limited.

An interesting feature at the very least.

im glad with what theyre heading for but still its not an entirely bad thing

Ok

I like this update I like all the updates cause I am grateful that Sakurai wants us to know bout the game before it comes out. Instead of leaving us high and dry till Febuary. I like the idea of watching matches and betting on them. Im not gonna want to play constantly Im gonna want to sit back and watch. Now that its online and you can watch players from around the world which is awesome. It is sad that there wont be names sayin who or where there from but I will take this and be happy. Viva La Brawl peoples!!

I see where this "helping n00bs" thing is coming from... first you get a free final smash when you're beaten hard, then new handicap, then this, which is something that lets noobs do if they always get owned.

sounds kind of boring actually. if it u can talk or at least know whos fighting, it would be a lot better, but this...

well i guess its a good way to learn new techniques, but i doubt anyone would rather do this than actually "play" some one to learn techniques.

I think this is completely stupid. If you want to make a spectator mode, at least put some work into it. Not like this. Where you just get a general match up you gotta watch, without knowing anything about the level of play, or who on earth your betting at. O wait a sec, you'll know they are n00bs, because they are using a comletely random match-up system.

Seriously, why do all other games have a simple lobby where you can either join or spectate, while it seems impossible to make for Nintendo. Even in '99 the first UT had like 100 times as many options as this. And this isn't the first "online" system, Nintendo has been trying it for ages. As much of a ******** fanboy as I usually am, I think today's update settles it. Nintendo can't do online modes.

EDIT: and about the learning part everyone seems to think about:

This is only for the completely random matches, so there is no way you will see 2 competetive players play, as they will not be going online by pressing "play anyone". You will see matches where you can just always bet on Samus, as she has missiles and no1 in the match will know how to shield.

Yay!

Spectator Mode seems like a great addition to online.

If you've seen any of the E4 All Videos, yu'll remember one where Fox got his Final Smash, then totally flew the Landmaster off the stage within three seconds. XD

Priceless comedy.

Of course, it's not just laughs I'm in it for. I enjoy seeing other people's fighting styles. I'm sure they'll be plenty of "pro" matches to keep you guys entertained, and even then, why not sit back and bet on which noob can survive the longest in Norfair?

wow. this was really unexpected. its not bad. i think the nintendo online stuff is pretty gay and you always get either someone who is a million times better or worse. i have never had a great memorable match on any nintendo online game. altho this feature has potental(i cant spell) its set up like for a quick gimmick. pull your finger out nintendo. fix the online gaming and this game will be the greatest thing in the world

lets hope that they can broadcast the pro tornaments so then it would actually be worth watching. not sucky people plz. thankyou

I find it amusing that the end of the worst week ever has nothing to do with playing smash bros.

Can't win against major league smashers? Being a spectator in a professional smash battle can give you tips.
Yes but you will have no idea if they are competitive players or they are just casual players. It would be much different if it was usable in the play with friends section of online.

This is a waste of space in my opinion.

This mode is truly quality. If you have a 360 and have the likes of PGR3, there's Gotham TV, where you can watch other's races. There's also a pro channel. But I can definately see the option of saving these replays to SD card, etc.

And, PS:

OMG THE MII CHANNEL IS LOL!

I agree with Pluvia(come on Olimar!) but this'll be a pretty cool feature, especially for those times when I'm too lazy to look for something to watch, I can just watch Brawl!

I WISH THIS UPDATE ALSO HAD THE OPTION TO WATCH MATCHES FROM YOUR FRIENDSLIST MINUS THE BETTING SO NO ONE COULD CHEAT. I've had this idea for a while now. You join one of your friends lobby. There are three of you and two of you want to play one on one. So the third person turns their character off and spectates.

This is cool,
Like Mic_128 I too like pitting computers against each other. I often do it while browsing the smash boards.
And I wasn't planning on playing that many online matches.
Now I can just watch them.

This could be a fun feature every once and a while. However, eventually it's just like watching CPUs beat each other up and won't be that exciting, even with the bets.

No. They play THEIR game and you watch. And before the match starts you can bet coins on it. If you're wrong, you get stickers. If you're right, you get coins. PRobably many. And the more people playing the more coins you get.

Yes, that's why everyone's saying "You watch the match"

This is only for the completely random matches, so there is no way you will see 2 competetive players play, as they will not be going online by pressing "play anyone".
Says you. You really think the more 'competative' guys arne't going to be playing random people for the hell of it? Or even for the fun of smashing someone who's nowhere near as good? People WILL be using "With Anyone" competative or not.
