I just want to reiterate that it's vastly important for you to tell us if you are ready for critiquing/scoring. It will make this contest go by so much faster. Regardless, I expect to have at least the same turnout as last time, if not even faster, just because I know the wait for scores is awful.

Ugh, this prompt is really hard, and I'm the one who suggested it =_=

I think I've got an idea, but I'll have to see if I can see it through.

Yeah, the prompt is bonkers. I'm sure almost anything that gets posted here has to be good, because it simply requires that much thought to it.

I definitely want to get something in here, but it hasn't been easy.

You guys are over-thinking the prompt. It's a really good one, but it's not hard. The story doesn't have to resolve around some earth-shattering secret, just some bit of information that either complicates things or leads to uncomfortable situation. It doesn't even have to be a "secret" at all, just something that the protagonist doesn't know up to that point.

For example, if I were entering this time, my story would be about sex, since that's pretty much the mother of all uncomfortable secrets. The idea I had was to write about a couple discussing how many sexual partners they've each had, and the immediate fallout. Now, for those of you who haven't had a sexual relationship yet, this would obviously be something difficult to write about. So you could take it in the other direction, and write a story about the "Birds and the Bees" conversation. Same idea: something you'd rather not know, except this time it comes from your parents.

Or take it in a more comedic direction. How did you react when you found out that Santa Claus wasn't real? Sneaking downstairs on Christmas Eve just to see Mom and Dad stuffing that huge box under the tree? That's the type of information that no one wants, and it's a relatively simple situation.

Lastly, you have the pregnancy issue, where you can write a story about a woman in denial about being pregnant, even though she exhibits all of the symptoms. Believe me, seeing that plus sign on the pregnancy test is probably the scariest non-life threatening situation there is.

I just came up with those last three story ideas while writing this post. It's a great prompt, and fairly easy as well, as long as you don't over-think it. Look back to a similar situation in your own life that resonated with you (it doesn't have to be super-dramatic), and you'll be fine.

Dammit Jam, you stole my Santa Claus idea.

Edit: LOL, Birds and Bees.

That comic would be a lot funnier without the first two panels. I hate when webcomics try to have character depth, and I especially hate when that depth is manifested as angst.

That said, I still lol'd.

There's a huge complicated story built up in the previous 800 comics that makes the first two panels understandable. HEY! You should read it all from start to finish so you can better understand the context! It will only take you a couple of months. Nonstop. No breaks allowed. WORTH IT!

I'm not "scene" enough to get most of those jokes in the beginning.

Or else I'm too stupid. Either possibility is equally likely.

There are no jokes in the beginning. That's pretty much my whole complaint.

Also, sex with the dead? Seriously? You guys must have some happy coroners.

I meant the first few comics in the archive on that site. Apparently it's a continuous storyline that runs through the whole thing, and I went back to see what the backstory was. But there's a lot of talk about indie bands and the bashing of emos and hippies, and I missed a lot of the references because I am not hip enough. *is sad*

Well, no one actively legalized it so much as no one ever passed a law making it illegal. So, by default, it remains legal. Mutilation of the dead, however--that is against the law.

Regardless, it may be a good idea to NOT die in my state. You never know.

Edit:

If there's grass on the field, play ball!
Lol. Just be aware of what jurisdiction you're in.

Where I live? Why, location is a state of mind my
So wait a minute, about that plagiarism thing...does that mean I can't copy anyone elses work, or does that mean I can't even write about a universe already established, like say the Star Wars universe, or the Star Trek universe.

And if it's ok to do it in already established universes, is it ok if I write about an event that already happened in that universe, but is never actually directly told or shown to the audience (as in, the only reason the audience knew it happened was because it happened to be referenced by one of the characters, or another character was confessing something and didn't use a flashback to confess it). Because if it is, I have the absolute perfect idea for this contest.

Their might be a fanfiction prompt at some point, by by default assume that they are not allowed in WWYP. At the risk of sounding like a jerk, WWYP is meant to encourage writing a step or two above what the CM is full of (read: infested with) these days.

YES!

Finally, I've come up with a good idea for this prompt.

Now all I gotta do is write it...

My, I got a corollary.

I may enter this if homework starts to lighten up. This prompt is trickier than the last one though, it'll fry my brain eventually.

We have about two more weeks, right?

I need to pretend that I'm doing this contest to have the impending deadline spur me into finishing the darned story I've been too lazy to work on this past month.

The deadline can be moved if need be. But yes, two weeks.

The deadline is in one week.

I'll start working on an entry this week.

I know at least a couple of people who are entering,

But... but if no one enters I have no one to devour, excrete, and serve on a plate to their own family!

I am working on an entry right now.

I found out quickly I am not good with 1000-2000 word limits. I've enterd two other writing contests, both had a 5-page limit where I wrote a nice, 20-page story and spent days cutting it down to 5.
