As we all know, Sakurai has set up four controller types for Brawl. In his most recent update he goes into detail on the basic default controls being used for the Wii-mote. So here it is:
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017a.gif" alt="Explaining the Wii-mote." align="middle" border="0" height="365" width="340" /></p>
<!--more-->The controls are as follows:
<ul>
<li>The directional pad controls your jump (up), moving left and right respectively, crouching (down) and dropping through platforms (tap down).</li>
<li>Button 1 is for Special Moves (Think of this as where B button moves used to be).</li>
<li>Button 2 is for Standard Attacks (Once again, think of this as where your A button moves used to be).</li>
<li>Grab is with the (-) Button, while the (+) Button goes untouched.</li>
<li>B Button is now your shield.</li>
<li>In order to perform a Smash Attack for your regular attacks, use Buttons 1 and 2 together or for doing Smash Attack with your Special Attacks, like when dealing with Samus’s missiles you press the directions, left or right and 2 together.</li>
</ul>
<strong> And now a more in-depth look…</strong>
<p align="center"><strong>Direction Pad (D-Pad):</strong> <em>Move</em></p>
<p align="center"> <img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017b-l.jpg" alt="Moving Around" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">Press left or right to walk and press up to jump. Press left or right twice to run and press down for a short time to fall through platforms.</p>
<p align="center"><strong>Button 2:</strong><strong> </strong><em>Basic (Standard) Moves </em></p>
<p align="center"> <img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017c-l.jpg" alt="Standard Attacks" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center"> Just press Button 2 for a standard attack. Press it while pressing a direction on the D-Pad for a stronger attack. As mentioned above one can perform a Smash Attack for your Basic (Standard) Moves by pressing 1 & 2 together. This seems to me like this might be faster than flicking the control stick on a GameCube controller, similar to C-Stick usage.</p>
<p align="center"> <strong>Button 1:</strong> <em>Special Moves</em></p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017d-l.jpg" alt="Burn baby, burn!" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">As before you have four Special moves in the game; neutral, left or right, up, and down.</p>
<p align="center"> </p>
<p align="center"><strong>B Button:</strong> <em>Shield</em></p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic06_071004a-l.jpg" alt="Shield Samus, Shield!" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">It might take some getting used to, but if you can reach your finger back there, you might just keep yourself from getting pummeled. The same concepts as Melee still apply, press B and down to dodge. Press B (Shield) and 2 (Standard Attack) to grab someone.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017e-l.jpg" alt="Mario manhandling a monkey..." align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">Of course one can just use the (-) Button to Grab, it’s essentially replacing the Z button on the GameCube controller.</p>
<p align="center"><strong>A Button:</strong><em> Taunt</em>
(Need I say more? Sakurai sure didn’t…)
<p align="center"> </p>
<p align="center">And as most of us have found out through the videos available online, the Smash Ball is obtained by attacking it. You can’t just grab it like you would any other item.</p>
<p align="center"><img src="/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/basic07_071017f-l.jpg" alt="Smash Ball" align="middle" border="0" height="329" width="400" /></p>
<p align="center">In order to perform your Final Smash it has been very clearly stated that you are not to hit any other button other than your Special Moves button, Button 1 in Wii-mote’s case, to activate your attack.</p>
<p align="center"> </p>
<p align="center">The control scheme is the same on all the control types.</p>
And just a reminder for those in the LA area, October 18 (that’s tomorrow), the E for All (Entertainment For All Expo) in Los Angeles, California will be taking place. Your chance to play Brawl will be available then. It will be available for play with the Wii Remote. Though, based on his comments, one could be led to believe that will be the only option for the demo.
<p align="left">“No need for concern—I bet you can play it quite smoothly and simply…maybe. How about a little mental training before the time comes when you actually control it?”</p>
