Because Brawl broke their heart! They opened themselves up to something new, they suspended their belief that nothing could top melee because they truly wanted to like Brawl. They've been playing melee for 7 years, new characters and mechanics is a welcome change after all that time. No matter how watered down, they would break it, just like they did melee. There were doubters who laid down their claims, all too accurately, but they were all shouted down by the community; they wanted to believe that Brawl was the next big thing.
But then Brawl came. Months passed and no advance techniques surfaced. The seemingly balanced cast of pre-launch were revealed to be, in actuality, less balanced the melee. Some stuck with it, as that's where the money was, but the game was a bore to watch and to play. Soon their hearts became sullen. With their heads hung low they went back to melee, and vowed never to have their hopes crushed again, as lightning never strikes twice... bro.
And now we have a community that is adamantly attached to melee. They say games like Project M will never be able to replace Melee, as all attempts at balancing such an amazingly perfect game would fail by any mortal, even though the team has a decade's worth of tournament data to work with and pro's of different characters giving them advice. They say PM looks less fluid than melee and thus is all around inferior. Which is a complete john, if you're playing games for graphics, go play MK9 competitively, its graphics BLOW MELEE OUT OF THE WATER. You aren't playing melee for the graphics, you're playing it for the gameplay. They say the Melee is perfect as it is, and a game with changes, which include more stages, balance, and more characters, can never replace melee. Which is like saying Starcraft can never be replaced by Starcraft: BW. As deep down inside when they say these things, they are thinking, never again.
