Why does short hopping feel so hard on some characters?

This is my first time playing PM. I play version 2.6b and come from brawl. I jump with y.

Why do I feel like my short hop window is so small?

I had this problem when I started playing melee. It is true that the short hop window is different amongst the characters. Fox's is one of the hardest while Bowser's is one of the easiest. I'm not sure why, maybe it had something to do with the jump start animation or startup or whatever. I use x to jump, and the key is to press it fast but soft, kinda like piano. Of course, it took me a while to short hop consistently with every character, it more of a practice type thing.

The short hop window feels so small because compared to brawl it is very small. Depending on your character you have a 3-6 frame short hop window with Bowser being the exception at 8.

When I started playing I had the same problem, just practice and play more and it'll become second nature.
