Top of the Food Chain: Armada's Smash Summit Dominance

They came from around the world all looking to stand at the summit of the Super Smash Bros Melee scene, but one by one, they fell at the hands of man who refused to be defeated. Adam "Armada" Lindgren sits upon an unshakeable throne as the only player to ever win singles at Smash Summit, and with the 4th installment on the horizon, he is looking to continue his reign.

Smash Summit: A New Beginning (November 5th - 8th, 2015)

Smash Summit is a special tournament where the strongest players in the world gather for a weekend in Southern California to train and compete in a variety of events. The event is run by Beyond The Summit; they invite the top 10 players in the world then 6 additional players are chosen by votes from the community. However, at the first Smash Summit, there was one who stood above the rest: Armada He dispatched his first two opponents without dropping a game, and then crushed the great Kevin "PPMD" Nanney in a 3-1 victory in Winners Semis to reach winner's finals.

Next in Winners Finals, Armada would face yet another legend of Melee: Jason "Mew2King" Zimmermann. Though each game was down to the wire Armada would manage to take a firm 3-1 victory over his long-time friend. Armada was on the cusp of victory now; he waited in grand finals and the man who would meet him there would be none other than the kid himself: Joseph "Mang0" Marquez. The Melee classic, an Armada vs Mang0 Grand Finals, was a great way to close out the inaugural Smash Summit. In a nail-biting 5 game set Armada's Peach managed to clutch out the victory against Mang0's Falco in a last stock situation. This event was fantastic and pushed Melee even closer to the forefront of the esports world.

Smash Summit 2: Revenge of the King, Armada on the ropes (April 21st - 24th, 2016)

Smash Summit was an incredible event for Melee and the second installment was shaping up to be just as fantastic as the first. With Juan "Hungrybox" DeBeidma in attendance this time around, the competition was as fierce as ever. Just as he had done previously, Armada obliterated his first two opponents without dropping a game, but this time, the unthinkable would occur in Winners Semis. In an astonishing display of tenacity, Mew2King defeated Armada 3-0 in a series of down to the wire games. Mew2King had only beaten Armada once in his career at the time, but to do so without dropping a game was even more spectacular. Armada had a mountain to climb in the losers bracket if he wanted to win this tournament, and in order to do so he would have to defeat Mew2King in the runback and two of his greatest rivals in Mang0 and Hungrybox.

Armada began his run through the losers bracket with a bout against Dajuan "Shroomed" McDaniel and took the set with a firm 3-1 victory. Heading into Losers Semis, Armada would be up against Mang0 for yet another set in their storied history. In a shaky set from both sides, Armada managed to eek out a 3-0 victory; with Mew2King waiting for him in Losers Finals after falling to Hungrybox, the time had come for Armada to take his vengeance. In a twist of fate of their previous set it was Armada who would eliminate Mew2King 3-0. Having defeated Mang0 and Mew2King without dropping a game, Armada had climbed back to the top at breakneck pace. Only Hungrybox remained in his path -- would Armada's momentum carry him to a 1st place finish, or would Hungrybox stop him in his tracks?

As Grand Finals began it seemed Armada would steamroll Hungrybox, taking game 1 handly, but the Jigglypuff main made it clear he wasn't going down without a fight taking game 2 and breaking Armada's momentum. The two continued to go back and forth leading to a last stock situation in game 5 where Armada was able to pressure Hungrybox for the victory, Armada had reset the bracket now all that was left was to defeat Hungrybox one more time. Set 2 began with a clutch play by Hungrybox in a last stock situation to take game 1; if they traded games at this rate, like the first set, Armada would lose the first game. He would have to dig deep to take home the gold. Armada summoned all of his discipline and subsequently swept Hungrybox to win the tournament. He had run the gauntlet and managed to climb back to his throne atop the Summit.

Smash Summit 3: Power (November 3rd - 6th, 2016)

The third iteration of Smash Summit was accompanied by a new arrival: William "Leffen" Hjelte, who entered the fray with his visa issues behind him he was here to compete with the best of the best. As he always had done at the Summit, Armada tore through his first two opponents without dropping a game. However, he had only grown more powerful with time and he was also able to defeat Hungrybox in Winners Semis 3-0. Heading into winner's finals with a nine game winning streak, Armada seemed primed to claim an uncontested 1st place finish. He continued to take two more games, but in game 3 of Winners Finals, Mew2King managed to finally break his momentum. However, it was too little too late as Armada took game 4 to close out the set 3-1; he now waited in Grand Finals.

It was Hungrybox who would rise to face Armada in Grand Finals for a chance to avenge his 3-0 in Winners Semis and his defeat at Smash Summit 2. In a set that went down to the wire, Armada clutched out the victory in a last stock situation -- he took his third consecutive Smash Summit title.
