Smash Master
Mods, I did not see a thread of this title and I performed the search and came up empty. If this is a duplicate, I am sincerely sorry.
I want to make this thread to discuss chances, movesets, and desire. I am going to rank out my opinion on the chances in my post here and give a slight description of what the character could be in the game.
I am doing in order from most likey to least likely and then I am going to discuss Sonic and Snake after all of the possible newcomers.
1. Megaman
Why he will make it: I feel like Megaman is the "It" character for Smash 4. He is the most desired character (including 1st party) and will bring the most hype. Sakurai's comment about a Capcom character could refer to Megaman. He is #1 on the Japanese list for desired 3rd party. Finally, his franchise has been very loyal to Nintendo and is far and above Sonic or Snakes' franchises in their support of Nintendo products. Another selling point is move-set potential which I will get into below. I feel that Megaman will be introduced in a spectacular fashion. If he isn't in this game, it will be a dissappointmnet.
Why he won't make it: IP contract falls a part or Nintendo rushes the product and time is not allowed to add him (A fear I have about Smash 4).
Moveset: The possibilities are endless. The copy ability is an interesting point and could be put in the game at one point. One unique factor would be have Megaman copy character moves after KOing them. Another option would be have light or beam that copies the ability. Even without a copying ability, Megaman still can have a very robust moveset. I feel that just as Kirby (with the hammer, cutter, stone crush, etc.), Megaman will use abilities he copied throughout the franchise from other bosses. This makes Megaman a very unique character. I feel that he would have to shoot pellets faster than Samus but can charge just like Samus. Whether Rush will be used in the moveset or not is to be seen but is also another option. I feel that Megaman makes a great Kirby/Samus hybrid with many more unique movesets possible. He is a no brainer character to add to this game. For further info please visit Megaman thread.
2. Pac-Man
Why he will make it: Pac-Man is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time and his company is aiding the building of Smash. This alone gives him a major chance to make the game. Then you factor in his appearances on numerous Nintendo consoles and even cameos including in a Mario Kart game and Pac-Man appears to be a lock.
Why he won’t make it: Namco wants to sell another character. Pac-Man’s move-set potential is not very powerful.
Moveset: I have never played Pac-Man 3D games but I imagine the move-set would drawl heavily from these series and include bite moves, etc. I see Pac-Man is having some similarities with Game & Watch in his weight and some of his basic attack moves although their smash moves and heavy moves should differ heavily.
I feel that Megaman and Pac-Man are close to locks for Smash Bros 4 and by far have the best chance of being in the game. The rest of the list has some great options but I could see Sakurai ending with just these 2 (especially if it is a rush job)
3. Dig Dug
Why he will make it: Namco is working on the game and may want another character. Sakurai prefers classic characters (probably because he grew up playing them).
Why he won't make it: Not popular enough, Namco desires another acharacter.
Moveset: He would be very unique. The blow up explode move would likely make it but would require a lot of program with every character. Sakurai would need to design some unique moves as well (i.e. Fox, Olimar, Captain Falcon).
4. Professor Layton
Why he will make it: A long running series for Nintendo handheld consoles
Why he won't make it: Lack of Popularity, not on large consoles. The character is not a fighting character.
Moveset: Like Digdug, this character would require numerous creative moves by Sakurai and Co. I have never played the games so I cannot comment here.
5. Rayman
Why he will make it: Rayman series is very loyal to Nintendo even making exclusives including the upcoming Rayman Legend. Rayman has a great move-set potential. Rayman has the look of a Smash Brothers character.
Why he won’t make it: Not the star power that Megaman and Pac-Man possess. Lack of games in Japan which is huge. Started as a Playstation Character (although pulled a Banjo Kazooie and has moved primarily to Nintendo). Nintendo may not want too much of a third party influence. Smash Brothers is rushed too much. Additional possibility is that Rayman will be a DLC if the game is rushed and that feature is added.
Moveset: I have not played a Rayman game but I have one coming to me in the mail. From what I gather reading about the game he is primarily a brawler with the potential for some great special moves. He appears to be a mid-weight character possible. Read Rayman thread for moer info.
6. Bomberman
Why he will make it: The biggest selling point is the moveset and Hudson Soft’s work for Nintendo. Bomberman started on the NES just like Megaman and has followed the Nintendo franchise throughout the years.
Why he won’t make it: Bomberman doesn’t generate a lot of excitement. His move set although unique could be replicated with Waluigi with certain moves missing. Despite this, I feel Bomberman has an average chance of making Smash 4.
Moveset: Bomberman would rely heavily on Bombs and Explosives. He would also likely have some normally brawling or attack moves that may not be reflected in the series (i.e. Olimar). There are some other inventive possibilities that can be done for this character. The good news is that whatever Sakurai decides to do with a Bomberman character, it would be very unique.
7. Second Sonic Character
Why one will make it: The Sonic series has the best list of star characters that could add to the game. Only 4 Characters would even have a chance (Knuckles, Tails, Dr. Robotnik, Shadow). Out of those two, I believe Knuckles or Tails are the most likely due to moveset potential.
Why one will not make it: Numerous reasons. One, we don’t even know if Nintendo is open to having two third party characters from the same franchise yet. They would take away from other deserving Franchises. I think the best shot of a 2nd Sonic Series character making it would be as a DLC after the game is made.
Knuckles – Knuckles has the unique ability of climbing walls and gliding which no other Sonic character possess. He also comes with a built-in taunt . Knuckles would borrow several moves from Sonic but would be unique in other areas.
Tails – Tails would be great if they follow some of the move sets similar to Super Flash Brothers 2. He could have spend moves, flying ability, and use technology (miniature Eggman). Tails would also likely borrow a few moves from Sonic (spin).
Dr. Robotnik – The sky is the limit with the moveset for this guy. He uses tech so I expect some range moves, maybe explosives, would he come in one of his machines? His chance at a character appears very slim although he is a great boss possibility.
Shadow – Despite common perception, Shadow could and should come very different than Sonic. First off he glides and not runs which should be reflected. He also has slower attacks and should emphasis chaos control moves. He also should not have homing or spin dash. Some of the basic punch/kick brawl moves may be borrowed from Sonic. Shadow has a weaker chance of making it than any above, IMO but may make it as an alternate costume for Sonic which will be sad.
8. Simon Belmont/Castlevania Character
Why he will make it: Started on Nintendo and still makes games for the system. Unique move-set. Popular Series
Why he won’t make it: Series is not as popular as it has been in the past. There may not be enough room on the roster for another third party once more popular ones listed above make it into the mix.
Moveset: Whip! Actually there are tons of Van Helsing like gadgets this character could use and it would be very interesting to see this character in Smash.
Others:
9. Namco Characters – There is a good chance another Namco series could make it, I just cannot think of which one. There is endless possibilities here but if Namco gets one spot, there is at least a 90% chance it is going to Pac-Man.
10. Banjo-Kazooie – Banjo is the opposite of Rayman in that he started out Nintendo and went Xbox. The Microsoft license will hold them up and makes this character unlikely. This stinks because Banjo-Kazooie would make a great Smash Character.
