I think there are different types of characters. I will explain them by types like Mario Power Tennis. There are six types: All-Around, Speed, Power, Technique, Defense, and Tricky.
First, All-around. We'll use:4mario:as an example.
Now, according to the official game guide, "middle" weight is 24 to 25 item weight capacity (for reference only).
Mario has a weight of 25 and average speed. He has a projectile, a reflector, good recovery, and something to KEEP opponents off stage (F.L.U.D.D.). All and all, no GIANT good, but no GIANT bad. Good :).
The rest of the all-around types are::4drmario:,:4falco:,:4lucina:,:4luigi:,:4miisword:,:4ness:,:4pacman:,:4tlink:, :4villager:, and :4wiifit:.

Next, Power types. These characters trade movement speed and multi-hitting and fast attacks for more weight and power.
For example, :4bowser:.
He has massive attack, but little movement speed (but much better in SSB4 then Brawl and Melee) or attack speed.
Generally, these characters are big, so they have good range too.
The rest are::4charizard:,:4dedede:,:4dk:,:4myfriends:,:4wario:, and:4ganondorf:.

Now, there are speed types. They are generally the nothing like power types. They overwhelm with fast movement and fast attacks with multi-hitters, generally with dashing specials and good recovery. They have little weight and power.
They are: :4darkpit:,:4diddy:,:4fox:,:4gaw:,:4greninja:,:4metaknight:,:4miibrawl:,:4pikachu:,:4falcon:,:4pit:,:4sheik:,:4sonic:,:4yoshi:, and:4zss:.

Now is Technique. They have special things that help them.
They are: :4kirby:,:4littlemac:,:4lucario:,:4marth:,:4olimar:,:4robinm:,:rosalina:, and:4shulk:.

Now there is Defence. They have a non-offence flow, with awesome recovery most of the time. Like Mario Power Tennis, there are vary few.
They are: :4bowserjr:,:4peach:,:4palutena:, and:4rob:.

Now is Tricky. It's hard to know what they're up to and you never know what's next. Or they make sure the match is played their way, even as CPUs. Ether they K.O. out of nowhere, you can't reach them no matter how hard you try, or they keep you close so you can't use projectiles easily. These should be called the :troll:s.
These characters are :4duckhunt:,:4jigglypuff:,:4megaman:,:4miigun:and:4ness:
Can't decide:mewtwopm:'till spring.

In my experience, I'd demarcate between different Smash characters with these popular terms - there are, of course, more character types than just these, but these are the most extraordinary types and the ones that people will instantly recognise the moment they see them:

Fragile speedster - Lightweight character with fast moves and quick reflexes, but poor defense and damage output. Designed for combos and hit 'n' run tactics, they overwhelm with speed and cunning but can't take a punch and rely on high damage to get the kill.

:4diddy: :4sheik: :4metaknight: :4sonic:

Lightning bruiser - Fast and strong in equal measure. The archetypal rushdown character, their bread 'n' butter is being able to blitz through the opponent's defenses to hit hard and fast. They usually compensate with a particular weakness, such as poor defense or lack of range.

:4falcon: :4littlemac: :4zss: :4fox:

Mighty glacier - The heavy. Big and strong, they hit like a truck but move like...a truck without wheels. Usually the strongest character in the roster, their main weaknesses are their immensely stunted speed and massive hitbox.

:4bowser: :4dedede: :4myfriends: :4charizard:

Glass cannon - The character that excels in dealing damage, but can't take it. They hit hard and can KO with ease, yet they're featherweights in terms of defense and shatter from the slightest touch. Designed to finish the match quickly and cleanly, lest they take too much damage and risk being KO'd themselves.

:4lucario: :4tlink: :4yoshi: :4palutena:

Stone wall - The tank. Where the mighty glaciers excels in strength, the stone wall excels in defense. Their big weakness is much the same, though: they're too slow to be effective rushing into battle, so they prefer to take things slowly and just outlive their opponent instead of beating them outright.

:4drmario: :4dk: :4ganondorf: :4samus:

Squishy wizard - Similar to, yet distinct from, the glass cannon, the squishy wizard specialises in ranged attacks and zoning strategies. They like to keep their opponent at bay and snipe them from afar, and they're most often pretty strong in that regard, but they're usually pretty weak physically and get sent flying with even a light tap.

:4zelda: :4ness: :4villagerf: :4duckhunt:

Of course, there are plenty of other, more specific character types in the roster: the all-rounder (:4mario:), the mech fighter (:4bowserjr:), the summoner (:4olimar:), the puppetmaster (:rosalina:), the stance-shifter (:4shulk:), the aerial ace (:4jigglypuff:), the ranger (:4link:), the item fighter (:4pacman:), etc. You can define pretty much every character in their own way, and even if some of these types do overlap, there's plenty of distinction here to keep every character fresh and exciting. That's the beauty of Smash~ :3

That is good to, but some are kind of similar.

Pretty cool thread.
Thank you!
