this thread kind of tilts me because everyone is so self-absorbed and only posts their own music without (seemingly) incorporating or providing any feedback for anything someone else posted

I like this thread because of that very reason. It's just a bunch of links to good music and not much talking.

*Assuming way too often that you know why people act the way they do* FTL

Some of the alleged post-rock music is neat. Slint, Tortoise, Gastr del Sol, Bark Psychosis, and Talk Talk are/were all good bands that were dubbed "post-rock" at one time or another, although just listening to these artists makes it clear how ridiculous labeling many of them as part of a common movement is.

what's your guys' take on Mashups? Ever since I heard Girl Talk I think mashups some of the most innovative musical forms these days. They chop together often the best parts of songs and somehow make it work. Its great when 2 songs you were fond of come together into one.

HEY GUYS ANOTHER QUESTION
how important do you personally view lyrics in relation to a song?

very general i know, but it's something i'm curious about.
doesnt really matter what genre, i'd like to hear mixed opinions

the game aint in me no more
the amount i care about the lyrics varies from genre to genre
for rap, i care more than i do for hardcore punk
but good lyrics can make me like a song that i wouldn't otherwise care much for
but if they are bad i can still like it

for example, bear vs shark and at the drive-in have lyrics that seem to be just words that sound kinda cool with eachother. there's some good imagery or whatever, but it's disjointed. the music is good enough that it doesn't really matter. the vocals just become another part of the instrumentation for the most part.

Super Mash Bros. is my personal favorite mash up artist. They do good work.

Lyrics are the ****. Bad lyrics make a bad song for me. Then again, I listen to a lot of Hip-Hop, so good lyrics carry the song.

Lyrics are for the most part extremely genre dependent. Like for hip-hop obviously without lyrics you just got a beat that repeats every 12 seconds and maybe a change if the song has a chorus. So good lyrics that make sense and flow well are needed. For music that is more instrumental based they lose a lot of value in what is being said and just need to not ruin the song with a voice that either distracts from amazing instrumentals or flat out annoys you(looking at you Geddy Lee for a lot of Rush's songs). The voice in a instrument that is more often used to say something than really bring a song together musically. This is one of the reasons Led Zeppelin is so good, Robert Plant knows exactly wear to move his pitch and place his syllables to use his voice as an instrument and a way to tell a story. Stairway is one of the best examples of a highly impressive mix of vocal usage in all facets and instrumental creativity that fits perfectly with the music.

tl;dr **** you read the post

lyrics dont mean **** to me
good composition is a million times more enjoyable
ESPECIALLY in hip hop, beat and flow > all

good example of lyrics having nothing to do with a great song:

mashups are fun but there's a lot of awful songs out there it's hard to find good ones
my favorite mashup projects would probably be

girl talk - night ripper
easter egg - jackin for beats
white panda - versus

and omg outkast is so good sometimes
the soundtrack for that movie they made is super duper ****
