Who is Tamagon?



Tamagon is the protagonist in Devil World, released for Famicom (Japan) in 1984, and later for NES PAL (Europe) in 1987. However, despite the very light use of Christian icons, the game was not released in North America due to the content policies from Nintendo of America back in the 1980’s. Tamagon happens to get lost in Devil’s world and must defeat the devil to escape its mazes by eating all the boa-boa dots with crosses and closing the seal with bibles. Tamagon can also breathe fire with the cross or bible to turn pink and red demons into fried eggs.


Tamagon and Nintendo’s History

Devil World happened to be the first game that Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, two legendary designers, worked together, which eventually formed a friendship as they developed more mainstream Mario and Zelda titles. Tamagon may be considered the predecessor to Yoshi due to both of them having their dragon/dinosaur appearances.

Ever since then, the series receive some recognition in a few games involving retro game assets such as Tetris DS and Picto-bits (Picto-pict in Japan). In addition, Tamagon and the Devil made numerous cameos in Smash Bros, with the former as a trophy and sticker in Melee and Brawl respectively; the Devil made appearances as an assist trophy in both Smash Bros Brawl and SSB4 (3DS and Wii U).


Counter Arguments


Not well known through the world

While NOA policies in the 1980’s may have hindered Tamagon’s chances to be known worldwide, it does not stop Tamagon from being elegible as a fighter since Marth, Roy, and Lucas became playable despite having their games released only in Japan when Melee and Brawl first came out. There are other contenders that could compete for the spot that are released in a few regions like Lip from Panel de Pon from Japan along with Shante from USA.


Very limited combat options

While that may be true in Devil world, but some video game characters happen to become fighters not because of cannon appearances but through potential. Ice Climbers, Pit, Rob, and Duck Hunt are a few fighters that made it in through creative liberty from its source material and beyond. While Duck Hunt had moves that combined other related games, including Hogan’s Alley, and Wild Gunman, to have a theme of the player as the hunter with a lightgun, other characters, like Ice Climbers, Pit, and Rob, had expanded movesets based on other traits including but not limited to character design, setting, and theme. With enough source materials and polish, Tamagon can become another fighter with an expanded moveset.


Other Concerns

Since Devil World lightly and loosely used Christian elements to cross and bibles, they can be modified to represent a unique icon, despite that such references has been acknowledged through past art assets (stickers in Brawl) and as stage prop (cross gravestone) in Magicant stage in Smash Bros for 3DS after sending a flying man off the stage. Otherwise, it does not stop Tamagon from becoming a fighter.



Move set:

I use BKupa666's template since there is much potential to expand movesets based on Tamagon's source material. I will revise it occasionally. When you read through the ideas, you can see Tamagon's potential with a new light like others with almost no fighting background.

Character Traits
· Tamagon would be slightly heavier than the light weights like Kirby, Jiggilypuff, and Pikachu

· Since Tamagon has wings, it might have the same amount of jumps as Kirby and Jiggilypuff, albeit a little lower because of its weight, without a special falling mechanic.

· Tamagon’s walk would be a little slower than some medium weight, but could run as fast as the average of several light-weight characters, albeit almost as fast as Kirby or Pikachu


Character Play-style
· I am thinking more of the opposite of Bowser: while Bowser is heavy weight and relies on brute force and melee attacks, the monster with brawn, Tamagon would adopt a play-style that relies on anticipation, stage control, recovery, and exploiting unique mechanics, making Tamagon the monster with brain


CANON ASPECTS


Fire Breath
· Can be reserved for some standard attacks since other characters use them as specials

· Unlike the original game, the cross and the bible will have their own unique properties and not required to breathe fire


Cross (or Sacred Symbol)
· Can be implemented as another part of melee attacks, albeit more suited to D-air, B-air F-air

· It can also be treated as a shockwave “mine” when planted on the ground or floating when planted midair


Bible (or Sacred Book)
· Instead of being a tool to breathe fire, it will act as a close melee attack with magical and defensive properties

· It can be held longer to open the book farther, resulting in more powerful effects. However, it takes from 2-5 seconds before book ready to be used, depending on post-release strength

· If opponent or its projectile hits the book before being released, the user will take half the damage and knockback

· It can reflect projectiles at faster rates, absorb the projectile’s damage to temporarily increase attack, or heal from 1 to 8%, depending on post-release strength


Egg / Fried Egg
· Egg can be used as projectile in unique ways

· Can hurl a fried egg at an opponent, very light: If egg lands on opponent, then Tamagon rushes to bite with decent knockback

· Can spit out a larger egg, but with heavy weight. If lands on floor, slimy egg will last a short time and opponents’ speed reduced while on the splattered egg. If on opponent, slows down significantly, but does not leave a messy area.

· Can also shoot half eggshells to trap an opponent for a few seconds. The eggshell can be broken by attacks or when it hits the ground

· The solid-colored egg can also be an aesthetic for a shield


Boa-Boa Dots
· Boa Boa dots would serve more as a support-type magic, each dot alone give little damage, but decent damage builder with more

· Boa-boa dots can be used to make a row of dots, which they explode with mild damage, shortly thereafter from center to edges. If used on the ground, the dots would be planted and explode afterwards. If used in the air, a small platform is made to allow a jump boost, following with all boa-boa dots exploding immediately, but cannot be used again until Tamagon lands on actual ground.

· The dots can also be summoned as projectile-based rolling barrier, and doing the same action would shoot the boa-boa dots to the nearest player

· Tamagon can erect a short vertical wall that moves forward. The only use of boa-boa dots that does not damage opponents. It would have to travel a short distance and be quick. The opponent is not damaged, but pushed away when colliding with the wall. Can become an anti-recovery move, if well-timed.


OTHER ELEMENTS


Abrahamic Elements (Christian and Jewish-inspired)
· Tamagon is a spiritual angel, possessing powers of fire and light

· Can also inherit moves based on the angel, such as producing a halo, praying, song-note, or even a fiery-heavenly sword, but shall remain as a minor element to the character since religious elements are lightly and loosely used even in the original game

· However, since certain angels can shape-shift, one possible transformation would look like a gigantic dragon with 6 wings like a seraphim; more ornate mask, spikes, and tail; and would be as big as Giga Bowser. Tamagon’s Giga form would inherit a “power-upped” moveset.

General / Miscellaneous
· Tamagon’s design gives inspiration for moves based on common dragon properties, including biting, spiking up its spines, and swinging its tail

· Tamagon’s wings can be used as a recovery move, either being a direction-based dash, like Pikachu or Greninja, or upward-only angle, like Rosalina, Pit, or Dark Pit


Potential Mechanics
· Tamagon fits more closely to characters with diverse moves than one with a fleshed out mechanic. However, Tamagon could also possess more polished moves that involve traits of a dragon and an angel, reserving the cannon elements for special attacks.

· Although Tamagon is a dragon-like creature with scales, its slightly heavier than light weight can ignore weak projectiles, but otherwise suffer a moderate level of knockback from other moves

· Since Tamagon has small wings, it can flutter then to slightly slow down its descent when the jump button is held, if the character goes for the standard double jump.

· Because Tamagon has the habit of eating from the original game, it could be possible to recover little damage by using the standard chomp attack when dealing with small projectiles.

I SUPPORT! I always figured that Tamagon was never added to Smash due to "religious reasons"

However, the content regulation issue is dying, and that is a good thing because it allows us to see how the first iteration looks like before any further changes were made. Crosses were also the common cliche symbol back in the 1980's when graphical powers were not strong enough, and they were represented in many ways from magic and horror, to death and heroism. With an increase in graphical resolution, the crosses and other classic symbols became less relevant.


Anyways, we have lots of work to do to convince people to vote for Tamagon. We can make banners, flyers, character icons, videos, moveset ideas, and more...

Most important is to spread awareness of Tamagon's existence in Nintendo.

I thought the title was referencing Osamu Tezuka.
I was really surprised.
For a minute, I wss far too excited about the idea of Astro Boy finally being able to fight Mega Man. Too bad that would never happen. :(

I support Tamagon. I think he'd be a great character akin to Pac-Man but with elements of Bowser. He was at least a trophy in Melee, so he's been on Sakurai's mind in the past and if i remember correctly, he was a sticker in Brawl. And considering he's a Miyamoto creation, i don't think it would be farfetched if we ever saw him.

I figured that the maze is actually an important background just to remind noobs of Tamagon's game of origin and the first line in this poster is a reference to the memorable "Attack the Devil's World?" line in the game. You might want to thank @ smashkirby smashkirby for convincing me to make this. :)

As for the Tamagon fanart, it belongs to Fryguy64 since it's the best looking one I could use other than the "dusty" original artwork or the Melee trophy. I might want to tell him about this since we all know how "stingy" most DeviantArtists can get, but the ones I've asked about Daisy fanart were rather lenient on the issue.

A lot of these lesser known Nintendo characters I'd love to show up in Smash in some form. C'mon, he deserves at least a trophy!
