Vectorman
The star of the 2d action platformer of the same name and it's sequel. The game takes place in a future where the Earth has been destroyed by humans through pollution and have started to travel the stars. Vectorman is a robot who was left behind on a planet to clean it up. But when one of the robots connected to a nuclear warhead missile, which radically alters his behavior, transforming him into a tyrannical overlord known as Warhead, who takes control of all robots and plans to declare war on humanity upon their return. Vectorman has to stop him.

Vectorman will run around the stage and attack much as he does in his home series. He will fire out blasts of energy in multiple directions. he moves like he does in his home game.

289: Ristar (Ristar)

Ristar.jpg

The star (ha!) of the much loved Mega Drive platform title, Ristar is a cult classic Sega character beloved by fans of platformer titles with a very unfortunate release window during the very end of the Mega Drive's lifespan.

Whilst Ristar never recieved any sequels, his game has had numerous re-releases by Sega and recieves a smattering of cameos in Shenmue and Shenmue II as a gachapon toy, a character that joined the fight against DOGMA in Segagaga, a brief cameo in Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing on the Death Egg DLC track and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed replacing NiGHTS as the flagman for every race.
Whilst that's not seemingly much, he technically has a better attendance rate in the Sega Racing titles than some of the actual racers...like Billy Hatcher who just straight up vanished in the sequel!

As an assist character in Battle of Ages, Ristar has one fantastic function; edge guarding.
Summon Ristar and successfully get him to latch onto a recovering opponent, and Ristar will launch himself into the opponent, knocking them backwards with a flying headbutt before grabbing out again and launching himself again into the enemy...Ristar will do this three times before vanishing!

Certain aerial characters such as Opa-Opa, Tails, Knuckles or NiGHTS may have an easier time recovering after Ristar's flying headbutt combo but for everyone else they're going to have a much, much harder time recovering from this shooting star's assault!

You could even do this when the opponent has all their HP left to get an early victory...providing your assist meter is full of course. Watch the panic in your opponents eyes if this star gets his grabby mitts on them.

Of course the easiest way to deal with Ristar's combo would be to prevent him from initially grabbing you.
If Ristar fumbles the initial grab his arms will comically continue stretching off screen and he'll launch himself away! A little embarrassing for the summoner, but undeniably amusing still. To make up for that though, if Ristar should miss, the assist meter will be 1/4 full rather than fully depleting to allow said summoner to attempt that again a little earlier than normal!

1. Taro Yamada (A really fun candidate who's come close to getting a playable role a few times before now, and honestly, his assist seems really fun too!)
2. Yui Mizuhara (Not only do I agree she's a pretty interesting piece of SEGA's history, but also that she'd mechanically be pretty fun to go up against considering her main method of attack is literally just straight-up golf. Love that.)
3. Ristar (Even if he is a little overrepresented in SEGA crossover stuff, he's still a fun lil dude with some decent popularity - and the concept for his assist and how it'd function seems really fun. This seems like a good role for him.)

Honestly, though - lots of fun submissions for this one!

Alright, time to see the results:

Casey: 0 points
Yui: 12 points
Taro: 16 points
Pulseman: 2 points
Vectorman: 10 points
Ristar: 14 points

And there we have it: the Mega Drive assist accompanying Ecco will be Taro Yamada!!! This guy might just be the most pushed/requested character who ultimately didn't make it, so at least he's getting something.

Moving on, we're doing the last bits of content before the guest now! Starting with....

Job #290: Submit up to two stages from miscellaneous SEGA properties

Last SEGA stage, and we are once again, for the last time, doing stages from stuff that doesn't have playable characters. This time, however, just like the character job, I'm allowing for everyone to put a second pick forward as well. Once again, this is the last time, no holding back, you don't have to worry about disconfirmations, just get your best stuff in - whatever you feel is missing representation-wise, whatever idea you're proudest of, now's the time to pull out all the stops cause this is It. Now HAVE AT YOU

Tavern (Guardian Heroes)
IMG_6501.png

Guardian Heroes didn’t get in the DLC with a character so hey why not now?
You play in the tavern with tables as platforms and a chandelier as a platform up higher. As seen in the image, the right side has walls but a big window on it but the left side has none. Occasionally enemy knights will jump onto the battlefield and act as obstacles.

Will submit a second stage in a bit.

The capital of Ragnanival and the hometown of our main character of the first book Gwendolyn, princess of Ragnanival and the base of Demon Lord Odin, Gwendolyn's father. Starry night skies consistently circle around the sky atop thousands of towers and walkways atop the kingdom. Gargoyles, Berserkers, and Valkyries will pop out to attack the players.
Might do a Unicorn Overlord Stage next but I need to play it before anything!

Despite being a massively-influential game, we don't really have a lot of representation for Virtua Racing last I checked. I'd like to fix that! I think it would be really cool to have a stage similar to Super Smash Bros' Ultimate's take on Mute City (SNES) - A stage where you fight on top of the Virtua Racing car as it zips around each VR course with those awesome polygonal graphics in the background. You'll go through each stage as the fight progresses, the course switching as the car goes through the finish line. Here's some extra images just so you can see how nice the game can still look:

What's black and white and red all over?

Jack Cayman may not be in this game, but that's fine because I can still pitch this awesome-looking stage based on the game show from MadWorld, a Sega-published Platinum-created game for the Wii. The aesthetic of this stage is an obvious appeal, taking place in black and white, with bright yellow sound effects popping up when you launch your opponent and splashes of red (probably changed from blood sprays for ratings purposes) appearing whenever an opponent is defeated. Of course, the entire fight will be narrated by announcers Howard “Buckshot” Holmes and Kreese Kreely!

Another thing that can really help set this stage apart is traps. This should be a very interactive stage, constantly changing to give you and your opponents chances to get caught by violent traps that can end a round in an instant. Like, for example, an oncoming bus that launches your opponent offscreen, or the sides of the arena being surrounded by whirling blades that cause one-hit-deaths. It's chaotic and frantic, but a lot of fun, and the great music will only ratchet up the intensity as the fight goes on.

1709996454675.jpeg

For a special touch, perhaps it can also give characters special monochrome alts? Though that would be difficult in mirror matches...so maybe not.

Okay, let's jam. It's a mad, mad world.

Stage Name: Lake Paradise
Stage Origin: SEGA Bass Fishing (1997)

A stage taking place across up to three boats on the idyllic Lake Paradise, a perfect place to go fishing for bass! This stage would be a travelling stage of sorts which would be characterised by its slowly changing layout, representing various different regions in the original game. Most of the platforms are made up of boats, or other minor elements nearby.

Starting at dawn, you'd begin at the Lodge, which would have both piers alongside one boat on which you could stand and fight - but at around mid-morning to noon, you'd motor along the shore towards the Cape, at which point you'd be joined by an additional boat. After that, you'd go to the Inlet in the mid-afternoon, now having three boats... and then after sunset, you'd go to the secret Palace stage, where you could jump onto the bridges as you pass under them, all before returning back to the Lodge.

The whole time, you'd be joined by a variety of fishermen from both SEGA Bass Fishing and SEGA Marine Fishing, and it'd also be possible to see some fish swimming around or even being caught. Plus, this stage could work well with a couple of unexpected cameos - briefly having characters like Seaman or Froggy swim past just below the water's surface could be pretty funny!

(In light of there being a SEGA Bass Fishing minigame, however, feel free to let me know if this is denied.)

Resubmitting Auriga

Auriga (ENDLESS)

The ENDLESS Series is made by Amplitude studios and published by SEGA.

The stage would start out in the Middle of Space on top of a starship from ENDLESS Space and ENDLESS Space 2

The starship is a medium sized platform about the size of FD with 2 platforms that bob up and down

The starship flies around before crashing into planet Auriga where you essentially see a game of ENDLESS Legend being played as you fly around on the destroyed starship that lost a platform and the edges are melted and slanted

You see many sites and battles from ENDLESS Legend including many heroes and cities being built from many of the factions.

The ship finally gives out and falls into the ground where they tunnel through it and you end up in a Dungeon from ENDLESS Dungeon or Dungeon of the ENDLESS. From here the Layouts vary wildly and new hazards like enemies running onto the stage and attacking players start to appear.

After a bit the stage resets with everyone back on the starship where you see the planet in all it's glory before the stage resumes.

Imperial Opera (SpikeOut)
IMG_6543.jpeg

Another stage based on a character who didn’t get in the last job, it’s based on the final level from SpikeOut! Now I know we do already have a stage based on well, a stage but does that transition into hell and then heaven? Exactly.

The stage is a flat surface until after a while the curtains open and a temple becomes a part of the battlefield and a surface you fight on.
IMG_6544.jpeg

This also transitions into a pit that opens up which you can fall into and a swinging axe that acts as an obstacle
IMG_6545.jpeg

It then finally transitions into another platform

Job #290:

1. The Saloon/Endless Dungeon (Endless)

The Saloon.jpg

Welcome to the Saloon stranger.

You've accidentally got yourself trapped on an Endless station. But in this hellish collection of dungeons filled to the brim with blobs(flesh monsters who soak up bullets), blurs(ethereal intangible ghosts), bugs (killer insects) and bots (err...killer robots) you've lucked out and have ended up in the Saloon, the one safe place on this god forsaken inescapable time loop piece of engineering.

You can get a nice drink at Fassie's cafe, perhaps jam out to the band up on stage or even stare out into the Endless Space (tm) front and center. Comrade in the corner usually has a nice cache of weapons that could be worth looking at.

Oh, that thing in the middle? That's the reloader.
That was installed when the last batch of hapless schmucks accidentally got eaten alive by the monsters on the floor below. Now when we're eaten by those monsters we can simply be brought back via a resurrection. Or cloning. Or nanobots. Honestly we're not sure, but folks who die tend to not stay dead now.

Be careful when you're on that by the way. Too many heavy hits to the floor will cause you to go crashing to the floors below.

Trust me when I say you do not want to go to the floors below.

If you're hapless enough to fall down below you'll eventually come across one of two Endless Dungeon bosses who will end your...I guess 'run'. You will at this point die. Try to have enough health to survive your death and getting reloaded...yeah, I'm aware that sentence doesn't make much sense...just another odditity of the Station.

Features:

The Station:

  • With items on, Fassie will serve up a cocktail to players who approach him which will give random buffs and debuffs. You never know quite what you'll get from this Drakken mixologist!

  • With items on, Comrade's workshop will allow players to bust out weapons and items semi consistently from his crates. This Remnant always has a cache of weaponry handy...providing items are on.

  • Sweeper will fix up any damage to the terrain after a period of time due to being extremely handy with machines.
Dungeons below:
  • Damaging the floor of the reanimator will cause players to plummet into the dungeons below. Here they'll likely come across a collection of heroes fighting for their lives against a dungeon boss as the Crystal Bot will follow the players around in the foreground as they fight one another.
    • Bug Momma spits out acid periodically from the background as Zed, Cartie and Blaze attempt to fight it with flaming weaponry, the creature's weakness.
    • Shelldiver is a monsterous experimental blob of flesh wrapped in rock hard bone(?) armour and will smash itself into the ground causing the stage in the foreground to shake as it does so. Zed, Bunker and Shroom will attempt to fight the creature with acid weaponry, the creature's weakness.
  • Eventually the team fighting in the background will be wiped out, and these two monsters will start upping their aggression in their acid and ground pounding attacks, damaging players slightly as they do so, but also eventually destroying the Crystal Bot. When Crystal Bot is destroyed everyone is caught in a huge explosion before being reset back to the Saloon.

  • You WILL take damage from the Crystal Bot explosion, which can be enough to kill a player with less than 20% health left and end the match.
If you survive the explosion when you're reloaded you'll recover a small portion of health however so either try to finish the fight against your opponents before Crystal Bot goes 'BOOM' or try to hang on to enough health to survive your inevitable deaths...err...if that makes sense.
Stage 2 coming soon

2. Derby Owners Club

Derby Owners Club.png

And we're off to the races!

Our Battle of Ages cast will do battle atop a stampede of racing steeds, leaping from horseback to horseback fighting one another.

Fall off, and you best try to jump onto a brand new horse unless you want to take damage from being trampled underfoot. As the ground is constantly moving, falling behind too far will result in a stock loss, so you maaaay want to keep up with the leaders of the pack.

Note that the horses can easily swap places by falling behind and actually doing too much damage to the horse you're on will cause it to fall, so you may want to be a little careful with your footing and be ready to swap horses when you can to keep your footing fresh.

Job #290 (2): Elheim (Unicorn Overlord)
1710744012299.png

The Elven region of Fevrith, which if you couldn't tell resides the elf race. Unicorn Overlord is a very new release and we still have no Vanilla Ware content so why the hell not, its a fantastic game. The stages will switch into 3 different areas similar to Castle Siege from Smash Bros. The first area is Laurhal, the elven capital. A war is breaking out in the background, you can see a magical shield protecting the castle from Ballista's and other soldiers such as Gryphon Knights and Featherswords. Beware of hazards from the war.

1710744765731.png

The 2nd area, The Divine Tree, unlike previously is more serene. The strongest center of Magik in the country of Fevrith. You will see the two royal Elf sisters Rosalinde and Eltolinde in the background.
1710745075803.jpeg 1710745104027.jpeg

The 3rd area is Palanspelt, The Subterranean city where Dark Elves reside. Beware of Elven Fencers striking lighting down on the stage. Thorns from the Tower of Thorns, Nasthirion, preside all over the city are also hazards.
1710745259246.png

Hopefully the more whimsical fairy tale look is unique enough.
Enjoy some music:

Piggy Plains
Based on a classic level off the iconic mobile game Angry Birds. Players fight on a structure made up of wood and cinder blocks. These are mostly simple platforms that connect together. A few pigs stand stop the stage. Eventually a warning will appear and a bird will be flung into the structure, breaking it a little. This destruction is random each time but it makes the stage slightly harder to fight on. The birds can also strike fighters. They come in red, which are normal, yellow, which are faster, and bombs, which blow up part of the stage. Sega just bought up this IP, which is pretty iconic and would certainly be a "they added that moment?" for our game .

NSwitchDS_CompanyOfHeroesCollection_04.jpg

Village Under Siege
A stage based on the Company of Heroes series. This stage take and s place in A vaguely European village do with houses, a windmill, haystack and other elements. But as in the games the stage is inpired by. At a certain point, a warning will ring out and the stage will zoomsout to warn you that an army is approaching from both sides. The two opposing forces will then start to shoot at each other, firing rounds and grenades. A tank will even till across the stage. If course, fighters will get stuck in the crossfire.

The Bermuda (Dynamite Cop)
20240325_002023.jpg

We have a situation down there - some modern-day pirates have hijacked a huge cruiser. They are holding 2000 hostages inside, including the president's daughter. We have to invade the ship! Clear the pirates and rescue the hostages! Especially the president's daughter!

I pushed for Dynamite Deka a lot during the final stretch of this project, and while it didn't make it, I still feel it's deserving of some major representation. So here's a stage based on the main setting of the sequel, the Bermuda cruise ship. When putting together this stage, I wanted to incorporate what I personally feel is one of Deka's most distinctive aspects, having those wacky anything-goes fights in all kinds of closed spaces, and I struggled for a bit trying to make use of that, but ultimately I think I managed. Just keep in mind, this stage concept isn't.....really accurate to how the ship is actually structured in the game or how you navigate it - I had to finagle some stuff to get a concept I was satisfied with, so just bear in mind there's some major creative liberties being taken here.

The stage starts out in the section seen above, with the fountain by the poolside. You can pick up and fling the chairs but otherwise it's pretty standard. However, as the fight goes on, the floor breaks down and everyone falls into....
20240325_002039.jpg

.....the bar! This is a much more close-quarters location, meaning there's a lot more chaos bound to happen in here, with everyone knocking each other around, throwing around pianos and Astro City cabinets, and that's the kind of vibe I wanted to capture with this stage. After some more time, the floor breaks down again, this time leading to...
20240325_002103.jpg

.....the dining room! This part of the stage has tables lying around, as well as chairs and food you can throw at each other. When the fight is starting to near its end and the combatants are on their last legs, we fall down one last time....
20240325_002121.jpg

....into the freezer! This is the tightest space in the stage, with the beef you can attack each other which as well, and the stage will remain here until the end.

I think I've made my intentions clear with this one, I wanted to capture the madcap energy of this series, even if it meant changing some stuff around to make a more interesting stage. I might submit a second one - we'll see, but no promises

Planet Flora (Ristar)
Based on the first level of Ristar. I felt this would be a good way to give representation to a popular fan favourite who missed out on our roster. The stage features three platforms of different sizes. The top platforms feature trees that can be stood on. There is a bar that fighters can swing on (leading to some funny animations, such as Echo using his mouth) to get them up higher. Enemies cameo in the background and Ristar himself makes a blink and you'll miss it cameo going through the level in the background.

1247127-bonanza-bros-sega-master-system-stage-1-bank.png

The Bank [Bonaza Bros]
Based on the first level of the classic Arcade game. I think the brothers are popular enough to get some form of representation in this game. Players start off in the bottom to the stage and can climb up the stairs to a top level. There are up to four different levels the player can climb to. There will be safes hidden around the stage with items hidden inside. Players may accidentaly trip an alarm, which will cause guards to appear on the stage and act as Hazards. The Blimp can be seen in the background flying in the background, and the Bros make hidden cameos throughout the stage.

I'm gonna try not to say much on this, but gist of it is I simply don't feel comfortable friending and taking messages from people I don't know at all. Sorry.

That said, while I'm at it, how about we finally get this vote up and running, huh?

Here are our picks:

Champion of Hyrule Champion of Hyrule : The Tavern, Imperial Opera
Captain Shwampy Captain Shwampy : Nebulapolis, Elheim
Flyboy Flyboy : Virtua Racing, DeathWatch
KneeOfJustice99 KneeOfJustice99 : Lake Paradise

1. Auriga.
A love letter to Endless? As someone who was pushing the series for most the game, I absolutely have to.
2. Deathwatch.
Black and white stage is incredibly visually cool and gives it a unique flavour. I feel Jack would have been a fun addition but we'll have to save him for the eventual Battle of Ages 2 to let him shine.
3. Nebulapolis.
Just truly gorgeous scenery. I'd fight in front of that happily.
