Super Smash Bros. for WiiU & 3DS director Masahiro Sakurai said: "Pic of the day. This time, you can challenge every fighter in All-Star Mode from the moment you turn on the game!! This is a survival battle with limited recovery items and no option to continue. However, this mode will be incomplete until you've unlocked every fighter... Until then, you can only play against characters that are already available. This is a picture of the bottom-screen menu, with a padlock indicating that the mode is still incomplete."

He included another picture and a comment: "In these battles, multiple opponents appear in one stage, and you clear the battle by defeating a number of them. The rest area that appears between battles displays the next opponents and the year the characters made their first appearances, and it also holds recovery items and an occasional reward. The characters you fight against appear pretty much in chronological order. Behold, the history of Nintendo games!!"

I had many reactions when I saw the PotD. All of them were hype, and I had trouble choosing between them.

SO YOU GET ALL OF THEM:

Haha! Yes!! The leak truly didn't have all the characters. Hopefully we get the hype 3 and maybe a few others (like Isaac).

Obviously, this assumes the ESRB leak is 100% accurate aside from the cipher, because I just can't take those last five seriously. Just can't.

Other characters and where they would be, if they're in:
Ice Climbers - January 30th, 1985 (Right after Duck Hunt Dog)
Mach Rider - November 21st, 1985 (Right after Bowser)
Ridley - August 6th, 1986 (Right after Samus)
Snake - July 7th, 1987 (Right after Palutena)
Wolf - February 21st, 1993 (Right after Falco)
King K. Rool - November 21st, 1994 (Right after Diddy)
Dixie Kong - November 20th, 1995 (Right after Diddy)
Ivysaur - February 27th, 1996 (Right after Jiggs)
Squirtle - February 27th, 1996 (Right after Jiggs)
Mewtwo - February 27th, 1996 (Right after Jiggs)
Impa - November 21st, 1998 (Right after Sheik) | Alternatively February 21st, 1886 (Right after Zelda) as she appears in the instruction manuals, but not the game, itself.
Isaac - August 1st, 2001 (Right after Villager)
Krystal - September 23rd, 2002 (Right after Bowser Jr.)
Lucas - April 20th, 2006 (Right after/before Lucario, depending)
Chorus Men - July 31st, 2008 (Right after Wii Fit Trainer)

At this point, I'm not even trying to be realistic, anymore, so I'm just gonna stop before I start going on confirmed assist trophies.

The possible order of fights after Meta Knight: (Please note, I'm not sure if it's Japan only debuts, but that's what I'm going off of, Japan only.)

Mr. Game & Watch - 1980
Duck Hunt - 1984
R.O.B. - 1985
Dr. Mario - 1990
Wario - 1992
Ness - 1994
Pikachu, Charizard, Jigglypuff - 1996
Sheik, Ganondorf - 1998
Villager, Olimar - 2001
Toon Link, Bowser Jr. - 2002
Zero Suit Samus - 2004
Ike - 2005
Mii Fighter, Lucario - 2006
Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina & Luma - 2007
Shulk - 2010
Lucina, Robin, Dark Pit- 2012
Greninja - 2013

It could be out of order, but I tried my best based on Japan's release dates. Also note, that only the years are in order, not the individual days that the characters appeared in.

Can someone please explain to me why this confirms that the leak was incomplete? I thought that I read that one of the leak pictures had all-star mode locked in it. Wouldn't this PotD deconfirm that since All-star mode is unlocked from the get-go? I'm probably mistaken about this i'm just looking for clarification.

i think thought that this has anything to do with the leak is ridiculous. Sakurai clearly has carefully mapped each POTD. Hence, it's Shulk in the picture, only days after his reveal.

It wasn't locked, it just had a lock over it like the above picture which shows it was incomplete, and that thus not all characters were unlocked yet. It was speculated that it may have been locked just because ESRB didn't need to see it or something, but this shows that the leak with the roster most likely didn't have everyone.

Well the rumor is that the padlock was on it, which means that other characters were left to be added.

This also helps the theory that there are certain characters that can only be unlocked by linkin the 3ds and the wii u versions.

Oh ok thank you. I actually thought that everyone knew that the leaked roster wasn't complete due to the obvious empty space at the bottom of the character select screen so I wasn't quite sure why everyone was so excited but I guess this confirms it.

I doubt the all star mode screen will update with each individual character we unlock. Maybe it'll completely change when we unlock all the characters and have the whole roster posing together

So who are the popular guesses for the remaining roster slots? My guess would be Mewtwo, Dixie, Wolf, Ice Climbers, and Ridley. Although I'm still not 100% convinced about the last two

For Sakurai and all these Smash "fans" happy with the possible exclusion of the veterans and newcomers.

So the padlock does mean there are characters left to be unlocked! And now, the question on everyone's minds:

Was the leaked screenshot of All-Star Mode taken at the same time as the CSS?

Now let's just hope this All-Star mode won't be as atrociously unbalanced as Brawl's.

I get the sense that this PotD was specifically chosen by Sakurai to keep the hype train alive for other characters because of the leak that happened.

When I read the first sentence I was like "WOAH! We really aren't holding back on the spoilers huh?"

But then I read about how you won't see characters that aren't unlocked and then I went "Oh."

There was a trailer last week so I doubt we will get one on Friday, maybe the Monday of the following week.
