i run melee from a usb using usb gx loader, do i need a memory card to save my game data or is it supposed to saved on the sd?

It depends on which GC loader you're using. Nintendont and Devolution support saving to USB, SD, and memory card. Just go with whichever you prefer.
For Dios Mios, however, you need a real memory card.
