Thanks for the advice! I'll gladly take it even though it'll probably be a while 'till I get my driver's license. However I do have an attention span of a goldfish, so knowing me I'd probably get distracted by a puppy or something and that'd be pretty dangerous. xD

I think you'll be fine. I was pretty scared to drive at first, but once you get used to it, it can be fun. Honestly people here piss me off, but I genuinely love driving.

Those posts.. amazing, sister. :awesome:

Edit: People here as in the drivers in my area. Seriously, I could have an aneurysm ranting about the stupid things people do here every day. It's that bad. But aside from that.. driving is very much fun.

Casually claims page. Go sister! :shades:

Ah, well that's great to hear! I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to, especially since most drivers I do see are just so... "chill."

Exactly; when I first started driving, I couldn't comprehend how my parents were able to drive with one hand so casually all the time. It took me about a year or two to be comfortable enough to do the same, though a lot of the time I'm driving one-handed anyways because lolmanual. It takes patience, judgment, and common sense. Nothing much more than that.

That's some really sound advice and yeah, other drivers around here piss me off too. @_@' Especially when it rains or snows because apparently, people think it's a BETTER idea to go faster at that point and it just UGHAAAHHHHH! Yeah... that bad sometimes. I can definitely understand the whole one-handed thing. Sometimes when traffic is in gridlock, I just keep my hands off the wheel to rest them, and just stick to the feet.

But to be honest, I commend you Twili for being able to love driving in Maryland, I hear that traffic is FAR worse there than it would ever be in Ohio. I guess that explains your causal slipping into the front of the line of cars posts.

I'm learning how to drive too. I'm trying to get used to having a manual. I suck SO BAD at taking off, and it's even worse going up hills.
...
And I haven't even left my dirt road yet, lol. I'm gonna be a terrible driver.

Believe me, the hardest thing to learn about a manual is how to balance gas and clutch. Too much of both will overhaul your engine, too little of both will stall you out. I can't tell you how many times I've stalled out, and even worse? When you buck the car. Bucking the car back and forth is literally the scariest thing I've experienced while driving, save for two near-accidents that I'm sure a guardian angel helped me avoid crashing both times. Hills are going to be difficult for you, especially when you have to stop on an incline. Drifting back.. you have to be ready for that gas when you let off the brake.

It sounds scary, I know, but it gets better with time. My parents each took one go with me to teach me basics, and I scared them both out of the car never to return. I let the car teach me after that, and my wagon was a better teacher at that point than both my Mom and Dad combined. It gets better, trust me. c:

Also the reward for mastering a clutch is so good, you'll love it in time.

Omg I've stalled so many times. My Dad keeps telling me to be slow with letting the clutch off, but my brain decides to not do it, lol. It's the Asian driver genes...I haven't bucked the car yet, thankfully.

My Dad has been teaching me for now. We decided to have him do it to save some money. Forgot where exactly we get savings but oh well. Once I get going I can turn, shift, and brake properly. Just...starting off.....bleh.

Yeah, I'm telling myself that it'll be good to be well-versed with a manual. It's definitely a good skill to have.

Dad taught me for the most part how to drive while I was still driving the automatic that we have, but they both gave it a shot when putting me in the manual. Mom was terrified ever since the tiniest accident she had with my sister, and Dad lost his patience with me when I managed to stall out about eight times at a three-way intersection, each time drifting inches back closer to the car behind me. I swear I was one more stall from just getting out of the car and switching places with Dad, I was so embarrassed.

I suppose it was easier for me to learn, though, since I knew how to drive already and could actually drive alone by that point. You're only on your permit, right? So you've got a more uphill battle. But hey, less steps to take! And A++ on not bucking yet, you're already doing better than I was.

My advice when getting moving: gas first until you hear it, then let off the clutch but keep the gas, put more gas as you leave the clutch. You can't let off the clutch first or else you'll stall. Pay attention to how the car sounds--it's your greatest teacher. That car will. not. move without you telling it to, a concept my father drilled into me over the course of my lessons. Learn the car, and if you feel like you're going to stall, either press in the clutch again, or give it more gas, or you will stall. I still stall sometimes when I'm not paying attention. \o/

Wow Twili, I didn't know you were quite the guru on cars. From what you said, it sounds like you had quite the adventure with it and well, you certainly have my respect. Manual is certainly harder, but I've heard from a very knowledgeable friend of mine that it is definitely as you described it when you do figure it out. My dad knows how to drive manual as well and well, it is a great way to save on gas from what I hear. Last but not least, manual will definitely be less costly on transmission matters, because YOU are in control of the gear shift; not the car.

Rickster, I commend you for trying to learn clutch for your first vehicle. While automatic is easier, I think if you learn how to drive manual, you'll probably be a far more experienced driver in the end. Not to mention, it'll get easier with time and practice. That's the beauty of driving. My first year had me getting a few small fender benders, but then I realized some things and definitely learned the most important thing: PAY ATTENTION! Because anything can happen on the road, but it's not something to be afraid of. When you get more drive time under your belt, you'll get used to it AND your car and well, you'll grow more comfortable and then you'll be like the rest of the world, yelling and screaming at people who seem to don't get it!

Not quite a guru, I wouldn't think; I've just been driving my car for.. hmm. Three-four years now? And I suppose I've just grown to really know my car. Sometimes I'll skip music just to hear everything that goes on in my car while I'm driving, it feels kind of refreshing. I own a 1996 Ford Escort LX wagon, and we've had it since the very beginning. Nineteen years going strong; I grew up in that car, and now I'm driving it. It's certainly rewarded me well for learning how to drive it. I suppose gas mileage really depends on what kind of car you have, as larger cars and trucks will certainly take more than sedans and coupes, for example. I usually only need to put in eight gallons in an approximately 10-11 gallon tank, so that benefits me for sure. As for transmission, indeed it depends on how well you take care of your car. Everything does, to be honest.

I've had my fair share of adventures while driving. Funny story (definitely not at the time but by now I can laugh); about a year or two back, my clutch dropped in the middle of my plans, and I had to cancel to have my car towed and the clutch replaced. Very expensive, but at least my nineteen-year-old wagon has a now-two-year-old (or so) clutch. I'd gone to pick up a friend, waited in her driveway, and by the time we went to leave, my clutch was out. It was terrifying, trying to move when the clutch pedal wouldn't release, and by the time we were near the end of her neighborhood, I realized it wasn't going to stop, and went to turn around. Worst part is, once I'd pulled into a driveway and reversed out, I couldn't get the gears to shift out of reverse. I tried and tried, but no matter how much I depressed the clutch and tried to shift, it wouldn't budge. I was stuck in the middle of both sides of the road trying to move, and had no choice but to let myself stall and turn the ignition again to move. It was one of the scarier things I'd experienced, and very sad to watch my car be towed away. Took me up until a few months ago to finish paying off that debt to my mom, as well as tire replacement payments.

Not to scare you @ Rickster Rickster or anything, that most likely won't happen to you. Just a funny at-my-own-expense anecdote I thought I'd share. And that was only one thing that's happened to me. :awesome:

The stupid people who don't know how to drive to save their (or my) lives! "dOES YOUR CAR EVEN HAVE A TURN SIGNAL??" "Is it really that hard to stop. Stopping behind me does NOT COUNT AS YOUR STOP YOU STOP WHEN YOU GET TO THE INTERSECTION." "Where are your headlights it's raining at 7pm at nightfall what is your brain because it's not functioning properly."
^^^ These are common things I will yell at people from the safety of my own car. People who don't know how to drive, smh. You're right, Maryland drivers are completely awful and I don't know how I retain my sanity at the end of each day.

God, I am so scared and self-conscious about driving. It is not such joy ride or pleasant cruise for me.

Also I really need to step up my page game.

EDIT: Whoops I wanted to actually RESPOND to this novel, not plagiarize it word by word...

A 1996 Ford Escort, it sounds like the car has been well taken care of if you're still driving it! I haven't had the fortune with cars lasting me long and it's not because I am crap at taking care of them but they're either with a problem that happens out of my hands or they are just badly kept-up cars. Three or four years with an old car like that is pretty sweet! And they can be very reliable if well-maintained.

Man, that's gotta be frightening and a little embarrassing with the incident involving your friend. I know I would hate to have my car just die on me in the middle of the intersection or just on the road, the feeling of that would be pretty heavy and maybe keep me off the road for a little bit. But to stall in both lanes of traffic, yeesh. I'm glad you were about to move out of the way there. This is why I probably would be deathly afraid behind a wheel of a manual car. A empty parking lot would be my best friend for a while until I got it under wraps.

Yeah, being a driver amongst drivers is where ANYONE'S critical side will be flaring like mad, it is important to follow the rules and have common sense, because driving's no joke! I try to have as much patience but if I'm tired or the day's been long and hard, that is ALL thrown out the window. I definitely commend you for handing that kind of stressful environment so well.

Rickster, you're not dealing with horrible traffic on your drives, I hope?

A Japanese deli/grocery store that's actually within walking distance recently opened up. I just got back. I can't stop spending all my money on food. Halp.

Also, after bringing my pile of edibles to the register and paying, I saw "it."

And by "it" I mean Japanese style cream puffs. They were being chilled in a glass display right next to the register. Nothing but cream puffs. There weren't many left.

I muttered to myself, "...Those look SO good... Should I get one...?"

The cashier heard.

Cashier: You should. I'm warning you now that you'll be coming back here every day if you do, though. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Me: Ah.
Cashier: ... Do you want one?
Me: ... I...I want one.

Here's a pic of it. I forced myself not to scarf it down as soon as I got home so I could show you guys. #DearDiary?

Ok so I was gonna reply to this LAST night, but I got distracted until 4 am playing a game with a friend. Then SB went down for maintenance and I gave up.

Anyway, I think that advice on getting going is really going to help. I think I get it now since you broke it down into simple directions, haha. I haven't bucked yet, but I do burn out from time to time.
Fortunately there aren't many people where I live, so I won't have any intersection situations like you had to go through. That does sound incredibly nerve racking though. If that happens to me I'll probably just melt in my seat or something.

You must have taken really good care of that car! You're lucky that its served you well for so long. My older brother got a new car, so I got lucky and got his for only $200. It's a 2007 Mazda 3. Everything is manual, so that's going to take some getting used to. I look at it like this: If I ever crash into a lake, I can just roll the window down and not worry about them messing up, lol.

And uh....I don't even have a permit...or anything.....:urg:

Traffic? What's that?
I actually haven't driven on the highway yet, just some county roads. I'm pretty sure I can do it, but I haven't actually tried.

I started driving again this week since fall last year, **** was so scary. I also went into a drive through car wash for the first time. I started hyperventilating.
I'm unable to drive yet but I always have dreams where I accidentally start my dad's car and then crash or I'm forced to drive... and then crash. Pretty spooky if I do say so myself.
I'm learning how to drive too. I'm trying to get used to having a manual. I suck SO BAD at taking off, and it's even worse going up hills.
...
And I haven't even left my dirt road yet, lol. I'm gonna be a terrible driver.
My advice for you all is just relax, relax while driving and take your time and always eyes on the road for puppy and etc and don't ever let I mean ever let those nervous and people in such extreme hurry get to you to ruin your concentration while driving guys after all that you will be fine in no time at all driving will become a second nature to your all you see then it will come the fun part like driving around the country with good friend having a good time, driving to the beach, theater, Apex to play smash in the tourney and etc. Just relax and maintain your concentration while driving guys I hope that all I said will help you on your driving. :)

Note: I almost forgot this always check the needles of your car before driving this is very importance like how many gas that you have left on your car, oil, water and etc.

Y'all know it. :drohyou:

Exactly; when I first started driving, I couldn't comprehend how my parents were able to drive with one hand so casually all the time. It took me about a year or two to be comfortable enough to do the same, though a lot of the time I'm driving one-handed anyways because lolmanual. It takes patience, judgment, and common sense. Nothing much more than that.
I completely agree with you in 100% in everything that you said about driving like sound of the car, clutches and etc. As for me driving with one hand became quickly nature to me after the test which I failed two time to passed in about one or two month I was already driving with one hand like a master on the road or something and yeah I also couldn't comprehend how other driver was driving with one hand at first. My parent doesn't like driving with one hand so I was the only one doing it happen so nature to me very quickly without realizing at first oh boy.

as for those people that you spoke of if I'm not mistake it one thing that I gonna say about those people and that is that those people that act like cool on driving they not even respect the older people while driving neither apprentice people driving for the first time even with the car saying driving school sure the world has become crazy lately with those driver sigh
( ◡́.◡̀) that is all.

Advice: Guys while driving please be very careful with those crazy driver and like I said above don't ever let those people get to you trust only what you learned or experienced yourself on the road.

My Most Awkward Driving Experiences:

1) Driving instructor passing gas. (Almost crashed from my eyes being filled with tears)

2) Entering car wash and windows wouldn't go up(Showed up to work drenched in suds).

3) Someone trying to steal my car when my gas tank was empty.

4) Getting pulled over for possession of drugs which in fact turned out to be catnip.

5) Being tailed by an old lady in a black escalade dressed in bubble wrap.

6) Some jack-off on my campus thought it would be funny to draw a giant shlong on my rear window with permanent ink. Was pulled over twice.

7) At the drive-in and during an emotional scene my car alarm went off somehow (Popcorn and weenies were thrown).

8) During a road trip with my roommate he came out of the closet and told me that he was sexually attracted to me. There were 4 hours remaining until we reached our destination (2hrs of awkward silence with the final 2hrs resulting in suffering through his tragic denoument by having to listen to "Miley Cyrus - wrecking ball" on loop) Made him take a plane on the way back.

9) Having bring my boss and his wife home after his car broke down. They were arguing like crazy (Wanted to kick them but I got bills to pay).

10) A blind man asked me for directions to South Florida (We weren't in Florida -_-)

Other than that driving is great! But I'll always be a horseback rider. After all, I own a mustang.

Damn, if you include that massive-caloric item in the middle of your post, I can see why people refer to you as the post-king in length. It doesn't help that I haven't eaten yet and I'm kind of starving a bit.
Oh, sorry. Good thing I was too impatient to take a picture of the tonkotsu ramen and karaage (on a mountain of rice) I'd eaten just before that pic, ahaha.

So yeah....

Simply put, I was in a house fire. Lost everything...but I managed to get another DS and I'm back in Smash. My new FC is 5043 4585 3494 since I'm trying to re-establish friends and stuff.

It's been a few months, so was there anything I missed out on that has changed in the smash world?

I Never told anyone about the solid 50 bucks I spent on him shortly after me and him became rivals, it came along with a trademark sheet of paper stating he's mine, which I've hid from all viewing eyes.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. :( Is everyone ok? I wish you well, man. Hope things work out for you.

As for Smash, there's been some more videos posted on MySmashCorner's YouTube dealing with tech and stuff. I haven't really kept track of anything else.

Also I don't get the point of not asking for matches here. It is a social thread. We asked each other for matches back on the old thread too. I'm not saying this should be the next arena, but I don't think it should be a restricted topic.

Besides, we could use some more activity here.

The reason I mentioned that this place wasn't for matchmaking was because Twi stated that in the OP. But I also think matches would make this thread more active.

Welcome to the thread!

Also, @ Rickster Rickster and @ Metalbro Metalbro I didn't forbid it. I just don't want that to be the main topic of this thread, is all.
