It can't be avoided once it starts unless the Sonic makes an error, and it's pretty **** effective because if someone is competent enough, they can lock from 0%-death.

Besides, I'm sure the Diddy mains have something like this too.

1: The default setup for the banana lock has to be timed very similarly to what is seen in the video, if not completely. To try this yourself, simply go to training vs. a Diddy, and have them set to "Walk" and try timing it. If you screw up, the Diddy will immediately get up from the naner trips.

The timing goes as follows:
-Footstool jump the Diddy
-Buffer a dthrow using C-stick down or down + A (latter not tested)
-Z catch the item while descending back on top of Diddy
-Footstool jump the Diddy again
-Throw the banana downward toward the end of Diddy's "getting footstooled" animation
-Z catch the item or airdodge to catch while descending toward Diddy
-Footstool the Diddy AFTER touching the ground, and repeat from step 2.

This is a GUARANTEED lock once done properly.

2: ALL of these setups work if timed perfectly.

3: These setups do NOT work under platforms. It's also fairly difficult to execute on Smashville because of this.

4: It wasn't tested much, so I have no idea how these setups work on curves or slanted levels.

5: There are still many, many other variants to these setups that are NOT shown in the replays. These videos are simply to show the more "basic" form of these banana locks on Diddy Kong. It's up to you from here on out to experiment with these setups and enforce them yourself during matches. Good luck!
