Smash Wii U SD Card to play Smash?

I've heard it requires an SD card to be in the Wii U to play Smash. Can someone confirm this?

No, but if you wanna save photos and replays you need one.
Man I wish you could save them to save them to the system memory like Brawl.
Spent half-an-hour looking for a spare SD Card.
