Guys, we really need to stop with this whole business about Miis replacing the random button. Sakurai already confirmed the random button is here to stay (not to mention it's got a design and is traiditional in smash.)
Oh, I just meant filling out the defeated character grid in All-Star Mode. I'm assuming that the CSS will always have that Mii-Fighters/Everyone Else screen in front of it and that Random stays put.

Edit: Beaten to it :)

Being able to play All-Star without a complete roster seems like the perfect way to allow the potential of additional characters after release. To me, this is the strongest implication I find in the PotD.

And how, specifically, would having both versions and linking them mean the games have a separate roster? I'm not saying that Wii U will have a different roster from 3DS and vice versa, but the unlocking method for these final 4-5 characters dependings on this linking between the two versions.
Because that becomes the pokemon problem. One game for the price of two. You cannot get everything in the game you purchased without also getting the other title to obtain the arbitrary pieces locked away from you. Except in this case it's worse because those 5 characters are locked in limbo for both games unless they interact.

Not to mention that the reason that Nintendo do Pokemon as two games per gen is because the Japanese love socialisation bonuses. I doubt they'd like being forced to buy two games to unlock characters any more than we do. So the incentive for them to do it that way isn't there to begin with.

And the Pokemon games are made for the same console anyway, and a portable one to boot (something that is supposed to encourage socialization bonuses).

Playing All-Star mode before unlocking all the characters seems not too dissimilar from playing Classic mode. I'm finding it difficult to think of any viable reason for this change to All-Star mode other than opening the potential for post-release (WiiU release) characters.

It certainly changes what we knew about All-Star mode. The main tenets of that mode were: 1) fight all the characters, only after 2) unlocking all the characters. I guess it allows for a survival mode of varying lengths depending on the available characters, and that may be the only difference between this and the previous rules to All-Star mode, but I think it eludes to the likelihood of character DLC.

I don't think this POTD should be raising anyone's hype levels. I just don't see how this changes what we know already.
It doesn't directly change anything, but it does create the potential for further speculation since now we can honestly say we don't know for certain what the leak means.

Also, in regards to my previous comment, I should emphasize that I am a huge Pokemon fan but even I find the whole thing regarding version exclusives to be somewhat silly, regardless of the fact that I understand why it's there.

So if you could unlock All Star mode from the start and fight only characters you unlock, Smash 4 is getting DLC?

It isn't guaranteed, but it shows us how DLC characters could factor into All-Star mode, which is a question that quite a few people were asking before this update. If characters can be added to All-Star mode as they're unlocked, the same could happen when they're downloaded. That would allow Sakurai to make DLC without sacrificing the ultimate completeness of All-Star Mode in the process. So I'd say it makes it more feasible, but we won't know whether it's more likely until we get a more concrete statement on DLC from Sakurai himself.

Perhaps there is something to the connectivity between the Wii U and 3DS versions. Perhaps in order to unlock certain characters, you need to connect both games and achieve some sort of goal while connectivity is happening. Note that they don't have to put the 3DS characters in at launch and can simply update the game with their data when they complete them. The Wii U will already have the data for those characters. I can see it be something like "Mewtwo: while connected, play on N's Castle, Kalos Pokemon League, and Lumiose City stages 10 times each." Or something.

I wouldn't technically be DLC, of course those only getting one version would miss out on some characters, but gives a good reason to purchase both versions.

Does anyone else have any theories as to why (according to the Miiverse update) All-Star mode is now available before accessing all the characters?

My personal guess is that they want to add DLC characters, but don't want to leave All-Star Mode locked until the last one comes out. Nor do they want to sacrifice the ultimate completeness of All-Star Mode by not having DLC characters be a part of it. So by making All-Star available from the start and adding in characters as they're unlocked, they can do the same for downloadable characters. I don't know how likely this is though. We don't yet know what else Sakurai might have up his sleeve.

Because of post release character unlocks or just for the sake of having more modes from the start is my guess.

If they had DLC couldn't they just update it to include the new characters?

The PotD show us that one or more of the following can be true:

- The roster in the leak was not complete.

- The final, 'in-disk' roster, will be complete, and the lock may show us that future DLC characters will be added until the All-Star Mode is complete.

-The final, 'in-disk' roster, will be incomplete, and the lock may show us that future DLC characters will be added later until the All-Star Mode is complete. (Promotial events, Smash Wii U launch, etc).

It could very well be either of those options, but who knows?

That's a fair point. I was just making a guess based on the available information. Frankly I think it could go in any direction. Today Sakurai showed us that even when we think we have him figured he can still throw us a curveball.

For those speculating about roster count based on the bottom screen of the PotD, keep in mind you'll never see all the characters there, since you'll likely go straight to the end screen from the last match. I wouldn't consider it having any bearing anyway.

As for my reaction, I'm a bit more hopeful for more characters, myself. I had wondered if All-Star mode was incomplete but accessible, particularly after the footage in one of the new commercials potentially skipping over some known characters.

On a slightly conspiratorial note, it's pretty hilarious how the Pics of the Day and related material have had increasingly damning evidence in favor of the leak. I'm expecting tomorrow's to be a picture of the SSS/CSS as leaked, with no indication on whether it's final.

The image for the full all star mode pic is gone

Did it have ROB and game and watch on it?

The only way the leaked image MEANS something is if it started with

Mr. Game & Watch - 1980
Duck Hunt - 1984
R.O.B. - 1985

If not, it obviously wasn't the final version of the all star mode anyway and means those characters hadn't been unlocked in that image

Which makes todays potd worthless for knowing if there are more unlocked characters or not

I could also see it as him identifying that the leak may have killed some character hype and wanting to say "hey, there still might be more to see!"

We never got a look inside the leak's All-Star mode, so there's no way to know. Today's pic of the day basically just reconfirms what we know, that the lock on All-Star might indicate more characters, so in a sense it is pretty worthless.

However, if that was from the leak

it further helps my point

Without locked characters, the first couple characters would show:
  • Pac-Man - 1980
  • Mario - 1981
  • Donkey Kong - 1981
  • Luigi - 1983
  • Little Mac - 1984
  • Peach - 1985
  • Bowser - 1985
Followed by
  • Link - 1986 (Feburary)
  • Zelda -1986 (Feburary)
  • Samus - 1986 (August)
This image shows the person fighting in it didn't fight Game and watch, Duck Hunt Dog, or ROB

Well, it's from a trailer advertising the game. So the characters wouldn't need to be unlocked anyways.

Well I can't see how anyone can say the roster is complete now. The lock in the leak proves that he has not unlocked all the characters as stated by Sakurai today. This also makes way for DLC characters, because the biggest argument was all-star mode would not work right since they would have to apply the new characters to all-star mode without requiring you to buy the DLC characters or not be able to play all-star mode. This is a big day for all fans who are still waiting for their favorite characters to get announced:mewtwopm:

And again, I've already cautioned you guys on the fact that shot could be from a separate stage of unlocking.

Also, do you think maybe we're focusing on a little too much on the idea that the game is being planned to have DLC? While I don't doubt it will happen at some point, people seem to be thinking that it's being designed with specific plans already in mind.

Hey, dude. Don't worry; you should be grateful Sakurai didn't bother disconfirming either. There still hope up in this schizz-nist, yo~

This POTD gives more hope than any other POTD ever has for me. Yes, it might mean nothing... But at this point, I am pretty sure Sakurai knows about the leak and is giving a flat out nod to that notion. Only time will tell though.

The original leaked picture was identical to the PotD if I recall correctly. This could either mean that the bottom screen for All-Star mode does not change as you unlock characters, or that the leaker got the image from a point where virtually no characters were unlocked (no G&W, DHD, or ROB).

I would say overall this hurts the chance for more on-disk characters beyond what we saw leaked, since it seems most likely that the leaked lock image was from the beginning of the game, but it does increase the chance of DLC characters slightly. I'm still not convinced Sakurai would want to release DLC characters in the first place, but at least now there would be virtually no logistical issues in doing so.

Hey there, keep your hope alive! The PoTD does indeed mean something. If the screenshot of the locked all-star mode was from the same period that the leaked roster was shown, then there's definitely more characters we haven't seen yet. Some people are just being cautious.

Personally, I don't see why the all-star mode shot would be from a different stage in development when that all came out at once. I think there's definitely more characters, so hang on to your hype, folks!

Why is it even that relevant that you can play All Star before getting all characters? Even if it didn't work like that, I'd assume DLC characters wouldn't be needed to unlock it, that wouldn't make any sense. This pic of the day changes nofin. It makes the leak more believable for people that needed the extra convincing for some reason, I guess.

I think the main point that should be taken away from todays pic of the day is that so long as you haven't unlocked all the characters the all star modes icon will have that lockpad on it which was present in the leaked image. So either when the picture of that all star mode icon was taken he hadn't unlocked characters like duck hunt dog or the picture was taken afterwards and there are more characters left. Also something worth noting is we don't know specifically how you go about unlocking some of the cast. For example wario seems to be an unlockable this time around, what we will need to do to unlock him isn't clear. For all we know the leaker could have managed to unlock the considered "late game characters" earlier than others by playing specific modes.

Although i'm still going to lean towards the side that there are more characters, i still refuse to believe that sakurai would go ahead and include doctor mario as playable over mewtwo regardless of if he was a simple addition due to being an alernate costume early in development. Plus i'm pretty sure doctor mario won't be utilizing F.L.U.D.D. so he isn't quite a clone. Though i do feel Sakurai is talking about these things intentionally to throw peoples perceptions off on what the roster may be like. I'd say due to the leak and the way Sakurai is handling things currently he's definitely keeping people on their toes.

If that method of unlocking certain characters through the connection between the 3DS and Wii U is real then I might not be getting the full roster since I don't a Wii U and will never be T^T
