50 is feasible if there is 40 that would be room for 4 more characters you are basically saying that there not going to be ganondorf, meta knight, or wario and wolf there not high hopes that is a realistic number be a pessimist somewhere else

How things have changed.

I'm honestly not sure what to expect from the roster now. I think we're getting at least 50....but it could even be a handful more than that.

I think 57/59. I know that they're too many, but I assume that most of the veterans are returning (and we're already near 50) and a couple of newcomers are announced before the release in japan. Once the game will be released, I think that there will be some secret characters as well.
So if not 57/59, 54/56, anyway we're getting many characters this time, or at least that's what I think (especially if you consider the 3 Mii categories as separate characters).

51-53. Actually I expect exactly 51. More would be a surprise, less would be a bit disappointing.

Hopefully about 47-50. More would be cool, though. I'd expect one or two more newcomers and a bunch of veterans.

If we're not counting possible DLC and count the Mii fighters as one, then 48. If you count the Mii Fighters as separate, I'd say 51.

This is also assuming the only 100% cuts are Squirtle and Ivysaur. If Snake and Lucas return they'd probably be DLC; if DLC happens then the roster would be at least 53 if Mii Fighters are separate; at least 50 if Mii Fighters are counted as one character.

Not to get into a debate about Gematsu, but I still think DLC may happen and that Lucas's chances of returning outside of DLC aren't looking so good if just for the fact that Mother 3 wasn't released worldwide (he's the only playable character from a Japan-only game in Brawl), and that while Kojima's statement of "not knowing" if Snake is in is iffy, it doesn't 100% deconfirm Snake. At the very least if Snake isn't revealed before release he may be DLC too.
