I've posted this to /r/smashbros, but maybe I can get some more responses here.

I've always wanted to get into the competitive SSBM scene for the better half of three years, but I've never mustered up the courage to head to the locals. First off, I'm still pretty small in age compared with the rest of the community, so that's setting me back. Second of all, if I do horribly, all I can think about is expecting an easy victory, and having it all crash down on me. I'm starting off with locals, but I will spectate and play friendlies at CEO and perhaps other big, professional tournaments. I wish I just had someone that wouldn't laugh at me because of my differences or discourage me if I didn't do too well, that I felt safe talking to, that was nearby and easy to contact. I know that Ken lives in Cali and attends SSS, but it takes me at least 10 hours to get to the arcade, so there is no way for me to meet any players that can help me at the moment. I'm playing vs. varying levels of computers (I read somewhere that I should be prepared for passive and aggressive styles, with weird and direct DI) but I still have no idea where I happen to reside when juxtaposed with the rest. I almost RSVPed for Pat's House 2 but I still refused at the last moment because I just felt like I wasn't ready. I don't think I can handle the trash talk or pressure of something like that, so I hope to try the locals. And then I realize that there are no nearby tournaments that I can play at on a regular basis and schedule, so I just wished someone could start a weekly or bi-weekly near the San Jose/San Francisco area. What are your tips for someone a little younger trying to get onto the scene?
