I was actually pretty hyped to get some recolors for Purin but the links in your posts give me a 404 from Dropbox. :(

Btw @ Veggies Veggies I have a post a bit back you probably remember that will let you copy paste to fix the hyperlinks in the OP. (Though apparently the links themselves are broken)
:(
Didn't realize when I cleaned out my dropbox (to make room for the Brawl Minus dev stuff), so have some new links

I think the four demo images should display fine together (maybe not when on a phone though), but let me know if you want me to combine them.

I have a request for anyone who feels like making it. A CSS icon (like the Fox one below) with the text "OTHER" and a picture including one or more of the following: Master Hand, Crazy Hand, Sandbag, Wireframes. And a Sheik icon.

How does this do CeLL?

Here's an empty version if you want to put in something yourself:

EDIT: Cleaned it up a bit and added a port picture. Also used the "load texture" feature in dolphin to get an idea of how it looks:

I finally did it!
Y'know it's weird it works great on Dolphin but I can't get it to work on Wii. Any suggestions?

Are you sure you're replacing the .usd file? If you replace the .dat file, you modify the Japanese SSS, which means the english SSS won't have that texture.

It works fine on my Wii.

This is really weird. Yesterday I built an ISO with the file and the texture showed up on Dolphin but not Wii. Today it shows up on neither and I'm fairly sure I didn't replace the build. All I did was rename the file to MnSlMap.usd and replace it in the root. I'm stumped.

Anyway I worked on this after the sandbag yesterday and was wondering what type of enhancements people would prefer:

Neutral has a bit of smoothing and a burred shadow. Red has nothing done to it at all. Blue is like neutral but with a black outline. Green is sharpened and has a plain shadow.

I don't know how I would do proper antialiasing so right now I like either Blue or Green the most. Input prefered, now I'll go catch some more poses :p.

EDIT: Some Fox poses (all plain). Unsure about Blue...

EDIT 2: Marth

EDIT 3: alternatives

EDIT 4: Falcon (tell me if you want me to stop lol)

So yea if I wasn't all that clear before: I want you to look at Falco so I know the preferred way of enhancing them (outlined or not, smoothed or sharped) and also tell me if there's any poses you think look out of place.

dat aint falco!

@ CeLL CeLL , here are some more icons:

CH.png
MH.png

Decided to do like DK and just do initials.

Maybe we could have a new icon on the right, under Young Link, that when you hover over it and press a button it cycles between Master Hand, Crazy Hand, and Sandbag. And then on the left we'd have one that cycles between the wireframes. As you cycle, it of course changes the icon, CSP, and the displayed name. Or maybe we should just use one icon that cycles through all of them?

Anyway I worked on this after the sandbag yesterday and was wondering what type of enhancements people would prefer:

Neutral has a bit of smoothing and a burred shadow. Red has nothing done to it at all. Blue is like neutral but with a black outline. Green is sharpened and has a plain shadow.

I like the first one. Though I don't think they need blurring. And if you want to emulate the shadows from the game's CSPs, it does its shadows 10px down and 10px to the left. For its color, I (and I think others) just fill it with black and set it to 50% opacity.

You should really learn how to AA the edges though. I think it makes a huge difference, and it's that not hard. In GIMP, there is an amazing function called 'Color to Alpha', which can help do the job of restoring anti-aliasing very well if you use it right. It basically replaces all selected instances of a chosen color with transparency. If you choose black, and you have a pixel that should be partially transparent on top of a black background (e.g. the edge of a character), then it will remove the black and make that pixel partially transparent while preserving the color. However, this also does the same to pixels that were fully opaque. Meaning if you applied to this to everything, the character as a whole would be partially transparent. So the trick is to select just the pixels that need transparency applied. Ideally, you'd want to select each pixel by the proportion that it should have transparency; i.e. if it should be 50% transparent, you'd want it 50% selected. How close you get to that determines how good of a quality your end result is. I feel like I'm starting to sound confusing, lol, so as a basic example that works really well, you could try this in GIMP if you want: use the Fuzzy Select tool to select all of the black background (assuming you used debug mode to make the environment perfectly black) with a threshold of 0 and selection mode of "composite", then grow the selection by 1px, feather it by ~2px, and then use the Alpha to Black function (found towards the bottom of the colors menu).

Where can I find things like laser and shine recolors? I noticed Silent Wolf was using some like silver lasers on his stream, and also I've seen some cool blue ones.

Also I'm looking for the texture of Dreamland that has Smashboards logo in the background.
Appreciate any help!

Preview with the characters portraits shown in my previous post: http://bombch.us/2Xd

Depending on the reception I might make more characters in the end, but I plan on doing at least the top 12 most used chars right now.

This is just a file for criticism though. Expect at least 8 more characters being done before I stop working on it. I still have all my source files so if some people come out saying it looks like crap I can redo it before releasing a "full" version. (and source ^^)

Introducing....!

The Fighting Wire Frames (CSPs)!

With selection icons:

M.Wire_Select_5.png
F.Wire_Select_1849169f_5.png

In-game screenshot -> DHSE02-56.png

Download Link; includes what you see here plus the _9 TPL versions of each (complete with palettes).

Notice that they're actually partially transparent, which is great, BUT, the _9 image type doesn't support a full alpha channel like this, so they won't look as good as the ones above. However, it is possible to use _5 type textures with full transparency support for CSPs instead (proof with link below), which should make these look even better in-game. So that's why I'm offering _5 types and _9 types in the download.

Thanks to zankyou for helping to prove the concept.

Right now the only to do this is to put the image(s) at the end of the file, change the pointers in the image header to point to the image data's new offsets, change their image types in the image header, zero out the pointer to the palette header, change the file size listed in the file header, and then rebuild the iso with the new file. A lot, I know. Hopefully I can make all of this a lot easier with DTW3 once I get back to it.

@ CeLL CeLL

I'm not sure if you still wanted more icons or what you're planning to do, but I felt like these needed to happen eventually anyway, haha. I think that someday we'll see these in the game, and be able to play as [balanced/viable] wireframes!

If nothing else, maybe seeing these will inspire someone else to make some nice codes for them. :p

DRGN, those wireframe character select icons look awesome. On the topic of that, can you take a look into this guy's stuff and see whats actually usable? This CSS is beautiful....

That's where Goxplex got many of the images for his altered CSS. (Though you probably already saw the comments.)

There are a ton of folders for various things in the download, though many empty, and some with what I think are vanilla dumps. But there's also a bunch of custom stuff, including some characters that are available as the individual images.

Looking through more, it looks like the good stuff is mainly those selection icons and some characters. There's a "changes.txt" (below), which looks like the characters that are available in here. Many of these are new, or at least not in the OP. The one Veggies posted is "GX Falcon". I think MachRiderZ made all of these, but I'm not sure. In one of the deviantArt upload descriptions he talked about using textures from the trophies for the characters.

Goxplex only uses a couple of the renders used in Mach's CSS. I was curious if all of CSS icons in MachRider's files are usable? I feel like I tried adding them in awhile ago and some problems came about. Like inserting with PNG-to-from-TPL made the edges of the pictures look weird and then since I didn't have the PSD file, I couldn't accurately remove his shadows and make my own with magenta/green. I was curious to see your thoughts on this.
Can someone PLEASE upload this CSS as a single file ?? :}
Yeah, I think it's the best CSS I've ever seen.

Yeah, I think it's the best CSS I've ever seen.
All the character-select icons in his "Mugshots" folder are large (144x135), so they'd need to be scaled down to the game's 64x56. I'm assuming you scaled them down. Did you also add the image type to the file name before converting them? Other than that, I do see some varying shadows around the edges of some of the icons. Idk why it's there, but I wonder if that's what you were seeing (you can only see it if you view the icons on a light colored background). Giving them a palette could help improve the quality of the finished product, but it's not necessary. So basically any of them should work with a few edits.

To get rid of the shadows, you could try adding a new layer behind the original, fill the new layer with pure black, merge it with the original layer, and the shadow should be gone (since the shadows are actually also black, just partially transparent). Then from there it would be the same as if it were a snapshot from Dolphin of a character on a black backround, so you could remove the background again as you normally would.

Is there a good guide anywhere about working with .usd files? I'm interested in doing stuff with the CSS, but thus far I've really only seen DRGNs quick guide about replacing CSPs with dat texture wizard. I imagine that other CSS mods are pretty similar, but I'm guessing that you need to know the offset for anything you want to replace, and also need the file you're putting in in the right format/type, which I don't know how to do. Also, are there any good ways to extract textures from a USD file other than dumping them with dolphin? Dolphin has been uncooperative with running certain modded versions of melee for me lately, and I wanted to get some of the CSPs out of one of the CSSs on the first page, but keep the character select boxes from a different CSS.

This is a lot of different questions, and I imagine a few of them are answered in the video about modding CSPs that I've seen people link. I'm planning on watching that later today, but I'm guessing that it doesn't answer all my questions about the CSS in general, and I'm interested in knowing to what extent modding the other parts of the CSS is similar to modding CSPs.

Also, I agree that the machriderz CSS is beautiful. If someone were to upload it as a single file, I would love them forever :)

For the CSS icons, it's the same process as the CSPs except with different offsets, and you can find them in Steelia's texture packs on page two of the Melee, Hacks, and You thread.
For the background I would talk to @ Myougi Myougi .

I guess I don't know exactly what you want to do, but if you want to use something from one CSS and use it in another, just copy the data at the offset and paste in the desired file at the same offset. If you want all the CSS icons, just copy them in one big bunch and paste overwrite. They're all back to back. Same goes for CSPs.

All of this will be answered by DAT Texture Wizard 3.0. Progress was real good, but I've paused on it to do a different program "real quick" like. In the meantime, you should be able to find any remaining answers in the 'How to Hack Any Texture' thread.

Thanks. I noticed later that the link was just messed up, so I fixed it and got it; I just hadn't come back yet to share that fact, haha. And yeah, I PMed the original creators for the others about a day ago, but they haven't been online here in a while. The second link looks like it was one of those "contingency" hosing sites, where it's hosted indefinitely provided it's been downloaded every so often.

Thanks though.

So I'm working on the MachRiderZ CSS right now, and I'm getting glitched out graphics on the Samus, Yoshi, and Zelda icons, and the game is freezing immediately (boots to the CSS). I've noticed that these characters are at the last 3 offsets of all the CSS icons, so might the data be being cut off in the MnSlChr.usd file somehow, or something along those lines? Here's a download for the rescaled icons and here's one for MnSlChr.usd. I'm relatively inexperienced with troubleshooting this type of stuff, so what do you guys think it might be that's going wrong?
