Nope, even the Japanese version can't connect to random wifi matches if you are in a different country. It's very unlikely that will happen.

Sorry about the sarcasm and ***holes, they just hate everyone. The fact of the matter is, the DOJO!! itself has told us that we will, in fact, be able to communicate with people in other regions. It's just a bit laggy. (It has been tested and proven that people playing the Japanese version can communicate between Japan and America with minimal lag, and even when there's a third person in Europe it's bearable -- it'll probably annoy very competitive players, though, as advanced techniques that require specific timing will be hard to pull off).

The DOJO!! has this to say.

But because this form of communication is greatly affected by the distance between you and your opponent, your brawls may not run smoothly if you’re really far apart—like, for instance, if you’re connecting between Japan and America.
This implies that copies of Brawl that are coded for different regions will be able to play against each other.

Of course you can play with anyone matches with ANYONE.

With friends works with any country for me, and alot of people in the states have been able to play people in JP and vice versa.

What people were trying to say is that currently the game's servers block by region.

If you have the Japanese version and try to connect to someone in Japan (and your in America), the game won't let you.

Yep, according to the DOJO.
I hope that there isn't horrendous lag during the matches. . .
Also just a thought, what would happen if the PAL version was different like it was in Melee?
How would that work out. . .?

They won't do it in Brawl because of the online feature. The only possibility would be releasing patches.

True; otherwise, they'd make everyone that bought a wii and brawl to download something at the same time; how hectic would that be?

What. All online Wii games could connect to different continents, but only in friends matches, not random.
