January 14th Nintendo Direct
Last week, there was a Nintendo Direct talking about all the big Wii U and 3DS games coming out in spring 2015. It was jam packed with announcements and new reveals. Highlights of the Direct include a new Fire Emblem game for the 3DS, Wii games being downloadable on the Wii U and the New Nintendo 3DS being released in North America on February 13th. Check out the full Direct video right here or read about it in our Smashboards Direct recap article.
Wii U Closes 2014 with Biggest Month of Sales in its History
Turns out that December was a great month for Nintendo and the Wii U. The Wii U's hardware sales increased by over 29% and software by more than 75% compared to 2013. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros for Wii U each sold over 1.5 million copies and the amiibo figurines have sold well over 2 million figurines in North America alone. With Splatoon, Yoshi's Wooly World, Star Fox and much more coming in 2015, the Wii U's momentum will only keep getting stronger. The 3DS also had a very strong December, including its largest month ever for first-party software sales, fueled primarily by Super Smash Bros for 3DS and Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Amiibo Wave 4 Revealed
Nintendo revealed the 4th wave of amiibo figurines from the Smash Bros series last week. This wave includes Ness, Wario, Pac Man, Charizard, Lucina and Robin. The new amiibos will all be compatible with Smash Bros for Wii U and Robin and Lucina will also be compatible with the upcoming 3DS game Codename S.T.E.A.M. Players can scan in the Fire Emblem heroes and recruit them onto their teams as playable characters in Codename S.T.E.A.M. Currently, no solid release date has been revealed for this wave, only being set as "Spring 2015" on the amiibo website. Pre orders are currently unavailable as well.
