grand finals – surprised no one mentioned these. even a year later i think this is still the highest aggregate display of skill we've ever seen in melee thus far. these are phenomenal sets, mango goofing off in the grands FOD game notwithstanding.
leffen vs armada ceo grand finals or: how to play the fox ditto. i don't know if this is necessarily the best collective display of skill of 2015 (even if i do think so), but i think this was definitely the most important set of the year. people like to geek out about the ‘gods’ of melee, a title generally reserved for armada, ppmd (formerly dr peepee/pp), m2k, mango, and hungrybox. leffen was the first person to defeat all of the ‘gods’ and break into that echelon.* however, he'd been in a slump prior to this tournament; after winning beast 5 and placing top 3 at apex and paragon orlando, his placings dropped off a bit, getting 5th at mvg sandstorm (losing to axe and hungrybox) and 9th at press start (losing to hugs in pools and sfat/mango in bracket). as a result, there was some doubt about how well he'd do at this tournament. however, he ends up in grand finals on
winners side – his first time ever doing so at an american major. you can see how he does if you click the link.
* technically speaking, he's never beaten pp in bracket even to this day, but there's literally no reason to doubt he can do it
