Major League Gaming's Anaheim tournament, being held at the Anaheim convention center in California on June 20-22, will have passes go on sale today at 3PM EST. Passes are limited and are sure to go quickly. For the first 30 days passes will cost $55 and their price will increase after that. Traditionally there have been limited supply of passes available on site - do not expect to be able to register at the event door. MLG is currently anticipating between 750 and 1,000 registrants, if it reaches the number it will be the largest Smash Melee tournament ever.

Major League Gaming confirmed after Wednesdays news that Nintendo has allowed the tournament to stream Super Smash Brothers Melee and that the prize pool for the tournament would be $15,000. This prize pool is likely to go to the top 8 competitors in Smash singles but full details have not been released. This is the largest prize pool for Super Smash Melee Singles since MLG Vegas in 2006 awarded $18,000. That tournament was won by PC Chris who took home $10,000. Doubles was also supported in 2006 and Ken & Isai won the $10,000 doubles championship.

The largest prize pool ever for any Smash game was in 2010 when MLG held Brawl - that year they awarded $35,000 to Smash Brawl singles with the following structure:
1st: $12,500
2nd: $7,500
3rd: $5,000
4th: $3,500
5th: $2,500
6th: $1,750
7th: $1,250
8th: $1,000

Gnes, with Diddy Kong, won the MLG Dallas 2010 Championship. His $12,500 is the most ever won from a single tournament. Ken, the King of Smash, is 2nd with his take from MLG Vegas 2006 where he won $5,000 from Melee doubles, $3,000 from Melee singles, and $4,000 as the season point champion (total take: $12,000).

If MLG Anaheim 2014 has the same percentage prize distribution at MLG Dallas 2010, the prizing would look like this:
1st: $5357.14
2nd: $3214.28
3rd: $2142.85
4th: $1500
5th: $1071.42
6th: $750
7th: $535.71
8th: $428.57

Other details about the event are still coming. @Solid Jake has confirmed that there can be exhibitions at the tournament and there is early work on getting a crew battle formed. Continuation sets, one of the less liked aspect of previous MLG Smash tournaments, no longer occur - which means if two players play each other it will always be a fresh set. There is also early information of plans to use qualifiers for seeding and a "Pro" bracket that is played into from an "Open" bracket, similar to how 2006 functioned.

MLG has confirmed several qualifiers already for Smash which can be found in the Smashboards tournament listings.
They are:
  • Shuffle V - February 20-21 - Columbus, Ohio
  • Fire Temple - April 12 - Los Angeles, California
  • WHOBO 3 - May 3 - Houston, Texas
  • Get on my Level - May 10-11 - Toronto, Canada
  • SKTAR 3 - May 31 - Somerset, New Jersey

I just realized that the people that did the 1000 dollar MM at RoM were competing over more money than the person that makes 6th at this tournament.

MLG being able to have Smash on board again, it gives me a second chance to experience this tournament setting.
